They catered for everyone including vegetarians and vegans. The first part of the week it was buffet style and the last 2 days, due to the lockdown in Nairobi, there were only 10 guests, so we chose from a menu and had table service. Again, there was plenty of choice and if there was something you requested that wasn’t on the menu, staff were happy to oblige.
The rooms were clean, with air conditioning and a fan and we were upgraded to a sea view room with was fantastic. Bottled water and tea/coffee was provided in the rooms every day and clean towels. Some people might feel the rooms need updating, but for us they were perfectly fine as we only really slept in them anyway.
The staff from the pool attendants, to the kitchen/bar and cleaning staff religiously cleaned throughout the day and strict Covid measures were in place at all times. We would definitely go back to Turtle Bay. The white beach was amazing and there are plenty of water sports to keep you entertained or if you just want to relax you can lie around the pool.
Highlights- The super clean ocean view room and the amazing food.
Its set up for families, but couples and solo travelers will love it too.
Next, we went to Turtle Bay to play tennis, but the tennis court (singular) had no net, the court is deplorable and appears to have been unused for many years. Be warned!! It is not usable. They did try to arrange for us to play tennis elsewhere, but the weather was hit or miss and we didn’t want to waste time traveling to another resort just to get rained on, so we passed on the offer.
Next, the food and drink: there was an adequate selection of food at most meals. It wasn’t great food, but it was good food. They cut corners to save money with inferior cuts of meat. As for drinks, this was discouraging. They can make a limited amount of drinks, but they use bottom barrel alcohols to make them. Stay away from the piña colada!! I actually poured it out, it was that bad. If you want better drinks with better taste, you have to pay for them. But if you want to just be happy, stick with a drink made with their supplies vodka.
Next, the spa… here is where Turtle Bay really shined. I had a massage on day 2 from Nina. After that, I went back every day except one. Top notch massage, relaxing, carefree, and enjoyable.
The beach was all but useless on Turtle Bay’s property, there was more washed-up seaweed than sand. But a short walk down the beach heading south or north found much better conditions. If you walk 15-20 minutes north past the peninsula, you’ll find a heavenly beach with very little seaweed, few beach boys, and soft white “squeaky” sand. This was a great find to relax in private.
The staff were friendly and helpful, but the resort itself has a feeling of being a bit rundown and not adequately maintained.
Would I go back? Yes. It is a bit overpriced for what you get, but bottom-line, I left feeling relaxed. Thanks Nina!
Beach: 5/5 stunning white sand beach, comfortable direct access
Rooms: 3.5/5 The rooms are small and very basic. The ocean rooms have a nice view but most rooms are average in view and amenities. They would benefit from an upgrade ND.maybe even merging two rooms into one.
Food: 3/5 The food was limited in choice and of moderate quality. We stayed for a week during Covid times with few tourists so some of the restaurants, especially the popular Weaver pizzeria were closed and the buffet was very limited due to small number of customers. I assume this improves with more people present. The drinks are average, nothing exciting.
Kid-friendly: 5/5 Ramps for strollers, friendly staff, kids pool, kids menu items, a shop with anything you need from baby to teenager, a kids club and shaded aground and easy beach access. The biggest selling point of this otherwise dated resort.
Overall 4/5: A good option when traveling with kids and when you want good value for money Not recommended for someone looking for quality seafood or a modern hotel.
We may stay again but are likely yo try out another hotel in Watamu. Management should invest in a full renovation of the property.
Good bits: No hassle of the beach, great watersport setup, good Askari looking over us at night and a good selection of food and drink. Phillis also set up a beautiful honeymoon meal for us on the beach in a gazebo covered in the cost and it was magical. Some of the staff could not do enough to support us and were super friendly and helpful. The beach is amazing and you walk out of the room onto the soft white sand . We would leave the curtains open and wake up with the sun rising over the water - it was beautiful.
Bad bits:
Blood splatter on our walls and ceiling where others have killed mosquitos. Our fan was rusty and has spun and spat rust water all over the walls and not cleaned up. Looked like blood when we walked in.
Air Con was older than me, had no direction or fan as someone had ripped it off and leaked water consistently all night (just dripping constantly so we had to put towels down).
We assume the sanitation was near our room as it would really smell in low wind.
No COVID enforcement at all, people were flying in and entire schools going through the buffet without masks on, although signs everywhere to wear masks. The staff also let people play music through phone speakers all day by the pool, it’s a very Kenyan and frustrating thing to do and there are signs forbidding this but no enforcement and feels like an 18-30 holiday sometimes.
Huge influxes from schools throughout the day took all loungers, all the staff time and bombarded the pool - made it unbearable to stay by the pool due to the noise. Even the adult pool had kids about; our heart sunk when we arrived and there were school busses arriving.
This sounds like a rant, but we paid £1000 for some luxury for 4 days in the beach suite and ended up surrounded by school kids, partys playing their own music and staff just serving the teachers. The staff are not bothered about enforcement and the Askari was actually partying with some of the girls playing some very offensive and loud music.
We will not be back which is a shame as the location and setup is perfect, but the lack of staff enforcement to make it pleasurable for everyone has ruined a luxurious long weekend.
Don’t come here for peace and quiet.
Of note, we had popped in as day guests for lunch a few days prior and had a 1 star experience. At that time, only the snack menu was available (chips, fish fingers, burgers, sandwiches) and it took 30 mins after ordering for the waiter to return and tell me there was not meat patty for my burger. Our very expensive toasted sandwiches arrived about an hour after ordering. Shortly after, while sitting with resident guest friends by the pool, the pool staff asked us to not sit on pool beds as we were not guests and suggested we leave. Given the hotel is currently at minimum occupancy due to post Covid times (there were 8 people around the pool at the time, 4 of whom were our friends) was both unnecessary and silly on their behalf.
So, let’s forward to our stay a few days later. Prior to I ur stay the government introduced the alcohol ban, so our all inclusive offer became full board, which saw management (at a push) reduce our rate by $3 per day. Generally, the hotel is just a bit tired, food is ordinary at best, all the included soft drinks are post mix and watery, there are a few staff who exhibit warmth and welcoming service. For many, it’s like they are merely going through the motions.
I cannot glowingly recommend this property for your coastal retreat. However, our friends have enjoyed their stay more than us mainly due to the kids club, which is a draw card for kids and parents alike.
I was very surprised by the service on offer from the drinks waiters and sun bed attendants throughout the day and evening they would check and make sure you were well hydrated there friendliness and efficient service is why I rated my stay so highly they should all be commended for there great work.
The buffets were at best interesting, if anything ran out there was no forward planning on replenishment it was just not available any more.
Would I go back yes, as the price point and the relaxation was on point I wouldn't rate any higher than a 3 star hotel that has very tired rooms in need of some TLC
We had the best 3 weeks here, everything was faultless.
All the staff are amazing and take care of you, ended up giving tips to as many of the staff as we could! For example on our first day they found out my partner was gluten free so went out and made sure they had gluten free pasta for the rest of the holiday.
Whilst we were there they had a full time table of the Olympics and a projector to watch it in a quite part of the hotel. The effort they put into the small things was absolutely amazing.
The food was great with good variety each day, buffet restaurant & an italian/ a la carte restaurant that was underutilised by most guests. The pancakes at 4 o'clock were the best. Activities around the hotel throughout the day made things extra fun.
The rooms were great for what you pay, covered with functional mosquito nets around the bed and windows, hot water, working aircon & fan's.
We got a reduced rate on our room whilst we were at Safari without even asking.
Overall the atmosphere was fantastic. The hotel works for people with & without children as there is an adult only pool & sun beds on the private beach (that the children often stay away from). Whilst on the children's side they have a children's club that has activities from 8am to 9pm and the children's pool.
Couldn't recommend turtle bay enough
