The Old Post Office Campsite is a small family run campsite ideally situated on the western edge of the Lake District national park. First established in 1951 it has developed over the years into the perfect place to spend your holiday. Scafell pike is only 5 miles away which makes us one of the closest campsites to explore Wasdale . Eskdale is a short drive and equally beautiful including the incredible hardknott pass!!! Situated in the quiet village of Santon Bridge, the site is bordered on one side by the River Irt - noted for it's salmon, sea and brown trout, daily and weekly rods are available by arrangement with the owners. Short walk across the bridge is the Bridge Inn, serving bar meals and real ale. Also within walking distance is a Woodlands Tea Room and Santon Bridge gift shop and post box. Seascale, on the coast, is only 6 miles away with miles of sandy beaches, shops and childrens play area. For those who wish to travel further along the coast without driving the west coast main line at Seascale provides frequent and speedy travel to all coastal towns in Cumbria.

We stayed here Thursday-Sunday. Warmly greeted by the owner of the site as we drove onto the site who told us everything we needed to know during our stay. Lovely clean toilets/showers/washing areas. Campsite was smaller than we imagined but it wasn’t a problem! WiFi was ok apart from night time, I think that was due to most of the campers using it. There is a pub just over the bridge which is pricey for a beer compared to the other pubs (inns) which we visited which you have to drive to. But the food was delicious and great service by a lovley waitress called Jenny, who we tipped as she was so lovely! There’s plenty of walks to find, we walked up Dalegarth Falls which is a beautiful waterfall, we also walked around Ravenglass on one of the days which had a lovely pub there too called The Ratty Arms which has a beach just down the road. Beautiful scenery & place, definitely recommend

We have just returned from a long weekend here. This has got to be our fifth maybe sixth trip here and it never disappoints. Every time we come something has been improved. Its ideally located for Wasdale and Scarfell etc but equally near to some beaches for when the weather isn't playing ball. There's a laundry on site which we found very useful this trip which youneed £1 coins or 20p pieces for. Showers do need 50p but they are clean and well kept and last a good while. The owner is lovely and always round if you need anything. We found this site by chance but it is one wr always will go back to. Tip if you are using sat nav make sure its set to towing and stick to the A595 otherwise it will take you over hard knott pass which is not caravan/camper friendly at all.

We loved everything about this site. We arrived to a very friendly greeting, the pitch itself was well kept and right onto the river with suitable parking for the car right next to the pitch which is ideal. The facilities were very clean as well. You have to pay 50p to an electric box to use the shower, but is a very small price to pay for a real electric shower as opposed to a swimming pool changing room style shower which you usually come across at campsites. Although we didn’t use them, access to a washer/dryer was also onsite which is a nice touch if you’re going walking in the area and need to clean your clothes. The local pub is also just over the bridge so was great for a nice pint before heading back to the site after a long day of walking. We certainly will be booking again.

We stayed here for two nights in July of 2021. The campsite itself is amazing and perfect for the two of us and our pooch. There is a real calming atmosphere about the site which enables you to relax after a long day of either travel and exploring.
The facilities are spotless and faultless, clean showers and toilets, the washing up area just the same. The site itself is maintained to a very high standard, grasses cut and beautiful plants, baskets and trees. The river running behind just adds to the overall calmness.
Spoke to a lovely man who i can only assume owns the site. Again, gave a lovely polite welcome and explained about the site and where everything was. I forgot to pack my charger plug and he kindly lent me one for the stay.
I cannot recommend this campsite enough, myself and my partner really didn't want to leave. I would easily say this is one of the best campsites we've stayed at.
Ps, Visit the pub next door, great food and the staff are excellent.

We stayed here for a week this August, 4 adults and 2 kids in 2 tents. We were greeted by the owner at the gate with a very warm welcome, the facilities on site were great and cleaned several times each day.
The kids loved being able to play in the river and with it being a relatively small site we could keep an eye on them at all times.
We had a great holiday, thanks.

This is a lovely site, the owner Gareth is a very helpful friendly person who would do anything to try and make your stay a great one. Very clean and tidy everyday. We loved the river nearby, and the very good facilities - small site so a bit tight but it was very well managed with clear boundaries electric pitches had great facilities. No one there said anything other than it was a wonderful place. You never had to drive far for some of the best scenery in the lakes, and we hv been visiting for over 39years. If you don’t have 50p coins ask Gareth, or take a bath in the river! We will return. Philip and Beverley.

The Old Post Office Camping and Caravan site is beautiful. Well organised and well kept by the owner with shower blocks, dishwashing facilities and beautiful scenery nearby, with the Bridge Inn literally 20 seconds away which serves good food and drink if you get tired of caravan food ha. The weather governs how much you do, as is usually the case in the Lakes unless you’re totally hardcore, we were very lucky for 60% of our stay and took in Ambleside, Kendal and the Ravenglass Miniature Steam Railway, which is magical (see my separate review) and brought back very happy childhood memories. This is a 10 minute drive away and well worth a visit.

The drive to the site gave me a whole new, and very beautiful, view of the Lake District from my normal Keswick/Ullswater orientated trips, and was breathtaking. A point worth noting is that if you’re towing a caravan, it’s a far more straightforward approach from the Cockermouth side as opposed to Coniston. That has a negative effect on fuel efficiency, although as I say is picturesque.

Finally a big thanks to the proprietor, who came to my rescue during our stay when furniture maintenance was required. His trust, as opposed to postponing the help, meant I could address the situation immediately, which meant that we could return to enjoying the break with minimal interruption. See you again soon, definitely 🙌🏻

If you are looking for a peaceful setting then this site has to be on your list.

I took my 10 year old son for two days and both he and I loved it. Very tranquil and great for kids who like to explore - especially walking the bank of the river and in it too!

The flowing river is right on the edge of the site - flowing water just added to the relaxation.

There is no on site shop so you will have to bring all with you. There is a fantastic Pub within on the opposite side of the river bank and the food there is fantastic.

The site manager is also extremely helpful - the site is maintained to an excellent standard.

A great little site that would be my first choice should I return to that location again.

Great location. We stayed here as a family of 4 during the early May bank holiday weekend. We did both cycling and walking. We've visited this area before and we love the views and walks here.
The site is quite remote. Fairly quiet, apart from the odd boy racer who enjoyed driving at speed past the campsite in his loud car.
We had a fully serviced pitch, so we cant comment on the facilities as we didnt use them.
The pitch we were in was quite an awkward shape, making it hard to fit a caravan, awaning and car in a row. But we just about squeezed them in.
For us this weekend was all about getting out and about and that's what we enjoyed the most.

We have just returned home after spending 4 nights at The Old Postoffice. The site is small, peaceful & extremely cleaned & well cared for. We was on pitch 26 in our large tent & it fitted perfectly, the picnic benches are a nice added touch. The site is at the side of a nice stream which our dog loved to cool down in. The bathrooms were spotless & the showers were 50p for 10 mins. There’s also freezers for campers use, a dog wash & a laundry room.
We had a lovely stay & our puppy loved his 1st camping trip. We will definitely return.
