The Cuan has been in the heart of Strangford village since the early 1800s. Having changed hands in 2020, the new owners have carried out an extensive renovation and reorganization. We welcome everyone to The Cuan, whether for a pint of Guinness, a delicious meal of freshly prepared and locally sourced food in our bistro or dining room, or an overnight stay in one of our luxurious bedrooms. We also cater for bespoke events and small weddings. The name Cuan goes back to Viking times when Strangford (Strong Fjord) Lough was also known as Lough Cuan which means sheltered inlet. This is also linked to the name of our takeaway, Little Wolf. Strangford itself is a picturesque and historic village. The Cuan overlooks the narrow entrance of Strangford Lough to neighbouring Portaferry on the Ards Peninsula. The immediate area is a delight to explore and is home to beautiful sandy beaches, fascinating National Trust properties and much more. T he Cuan is a unique destination in a stunning setting. We look forward to your visit!

Stayed at The Cuan House, a refurbished self catering 5 bed house which overlooks the harbour. It has been recently refurbished to a very high standard, extremely flexible accommodation with 5 bedrooms, 3 reception rooms and a lovely conservatory.

We ate one evening meal and all of our breakfasts at The Cuan Hotel and were not disappointed- both food and service were excellent and the environment was so beautiful and comfortable. I was admiring all of the lovely little touches! In particular I loved the breakfast tier - a selection room of pastries and other goodies presented like an afternoon tea- really special 😊

Special mentions to Michael, Dolores, Dale, Alison and Katie, all of whom looked after us so well.

We will definitely be back!

We really had an enjoyable stay at The Cuan, the cleanliness and decor is wonderful, the staff especially the waitress in the breakfast room was so friendly and welcoming, nothing a bother. We would go back again. The interior design throughout must be commended modern yet tasteful and full of character

We recently held our wedding in the Cuan, we had a fabulous day. The ceremony was in the Bistro which the staff had made very comfortable and intimate, exactly what we had hoped for. The wedding meal itself was superb, many guests saying it was the best wedding breakfast they had been to. Thoughtful suggestions had been put forward by Gerard Sands and his team and were beautifully prepared and served. The waiting and bar staff could not have been more helpful and attentive, they went out of their way to make our day special and problem free.
During the meal the Bistro had been cleared to allow music and dancing. Having the bar area beside it for those who wanted to chat was brilliant.
Many thanks to Karen Craig and her team for helping to make our wedding day so enjoyable. We were a group of 50 and for a wedding or other event of that size I cannot recommend the Cuan highly enough. Looking forward already to having our 25th anniversary do there!

My first meal in a restaurant in 16 months was a delicious al fresco lunch at The Cuan in Strangford. We were having a mini road trip which included a walk around Castle Ward. We hadn't booked the restaurant so were offered an outside table. Luckily the wall heaters were on and the sun came out. We had very attentive service. The menu read really well. We chose a main course chowder which was packed with beautifully cooked fish but also was colourfully presented with a variety of vegetables included. My partner had a stunning prawn salad. Both dishes were served with a homemade wheaten roll. A great lunch...how nice to be cooked for again. One wee thing which might help outside diners...some sort of paperweight to set on top of the menus which kept blowing away..a painted stone?
Thank you we will be back.

My husband and I met a friend for lunch in the Cuan yesterday. We were greeted on arrival and shown to our table, We decided to have a selection of nibbles to start - the sourdough with tapenade and different flavoured butters was very tasty. We also had the whitebait which was crisp and served with aioli. Our starters and mains were all well presented and delicious. We couldn’t manage dessert but all finished with excellent coffees. Before we knew it, the afternoon had flown by!

Stayed for two nights B&B and evening meal.
PROS: Room comfortable having been recently refurbished, staff friendly and food tasty pub grub, nicely cooked and presented. Very nice IPA beer from the bar.
CONS: Nice bathroom let down by damaged shower hose especially as they are so cheap to replace. Breakfast was supposed to start at 8.00am but we found the restaurant in total darkness. A staff member had slept in which meant we had to forego cooked breakfast as we needed to leave sharp to get the ferry in Belfast. Finally the Fire Notice in the room was lying loose next to the tea making facilities. It asked you leave via the back door in case of fire but there was no diagram to show you where that was in relation to our room. This notice needs updated and fixed to the back of the room door so it can't be mislaid.

Dear Paul Thank you for taking the time to review The Cuan. It is with sincere regret that I learn your overall stay with us did not meet your satisfaction, especially your experience with breakfast. I will certainly speak to the Restaurant Manager and raise this issue. I have already rectified the the situation with the Fire Notice , thank you for bringing this to our attention. We appreciate all your feedback, which we take very seriously, and I would like to assure you that this is being looked into in detail to avoid any future re-occurrences.

My partner and I, along with our 2 year old toddler, arrived for a 1 night stay at the Cuan and we were immediately greeted as if we were family! A big friendly hello to us and our toddler, he was even personally introduced to the staff so they knew he was staying, which was such a lovely touch. It immediately made us feel at ease, travelling with a toddler isnt the most relaxing at times!!
Our room was beautiflly renovated, with plenty of room, even with a travel cot! Lots of nice touches in the bathroom as well as a lovey tea station, which was a welcome addition.
Our son had an early dinner which was no hassle at all, with the staff going above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed.
We had our dinner later in the restaurant, the food could not be faulted. Fast, friendly service and everything was reasonably priced.
The next morning we were greated with a beautiful breakfast, freshly cooked by the most friendly chef!! I never got his name, but he shared some lovely parenting advice (not patrionising!) I really enjoyed the chat!
The staff at the Cuan also arranged our visit to Exploris with a discount code which was great and ensured that we knew the times for the Ferry!
A little note, the Little wolf takeaway (part of the Cuan) does AMAZING morning pastries and coffee, great if you want a snack for the Ferry!!

Honeslty I cant say enough good things. Highly reccommend a visit if you are in the area!!

All of the staff where welcoming and nothing was a hassle, we will 100% be visiting again, as well as recommeding to all of our family and friends!

THANK YOU!!

We had an overnight stay here with dinner included. Our room had a vary comfy bed, nice decor, plenty of plug sockets in the right places and the shower room had white fluffy towels , a great shower and lovely shower gel etc. Our dinner in the evening was excellent and the breakfast was very tasty with a good choice. As well as all this the staff were delightful. Very helpful and made us feel very welcome. I cannot think of anything negative I could possibly say about our visit. This place reflects the idyllic little village it sits in and I would recommend it highly.

Myself and my hubby arrived here with our two cockapoos for an overnight break. I can't praise it enough, the rooms were really cosy with all the usual amenities, and the beds very comfortable. The dogs (Bailey and Buddy) were allowed everywhere with us and the staff loved to pay them so much attention. We ate in the restaurant and as vegetarians we found that nothing was too much trouble. But the backbone of our stay was the staff, to say they were friendly would be an understatement. Every single one of them that we had to engage with were wonderful, smiling, helpful, with time have a conversation and only too willing make us feel special (and the dogs too of course!) Come spring we will be back for more....it would be silly not to!!

It wasn't our first time eating at this hotel ( although we never stayed there ) the food was excellent and the staff where very attentive. This visit was a totally different experience. The new owners had changed the whole look of the hotel and it now feels warm and welcoming. The food was absolutely stunning and the staff were excellent, very warm and welcoming and treated you as a if you where a regular visitor or resident to the hotel. My next visit is in July when we have visitors from England and me and my wife look forward to taking them to experience the atmosphere and great food.
