My time at samaki lodge and spa was short but sweet. It was my first time to zanzibar so didn’t know what to expect. But it was brilliant! The staff were lovely and friendly, made us feel very at home and made it clear that they were happy to help any problems we may have encountered.

My highlight of the stay would have to be the waiter who works at Kamakocha - Stefan (the on-site restaurant). He was the best waiter I have ever had the pleasure of being served by. To say his smile lit up a room would be an understatement! He really was a treat and accommodated any food or drink requirements we needed. I would return to samaki and would highly recommend to any other people thinking about staying in Uroa.

We were at this wonderful hotel in December 2020. The hotel is just with such wonderful staff who willingly helped us and told us everything. especially I would highlight the administrator Ali-Muhammad and one girl at restaurant Shami.

We were a big family, three children(boys). There was always something to do. territory for two hotels, two swimming pools. beautiful ocean with ebb and flow. there was always an entertainment program from morning to evening, both for adults and children.

The food is varied and delicious. We had a garden room and two ocean view rooms. It was an amazing time. I hope to come back here sometime again. thanks to the hotel administration and all the staff.

We spent half of our stay in Zanzibar at this lovely hotel.
The atmosphere is very intimate and cozy.
We loved to spend our afternoons at the pool and at the long white beach just few steps away.
Rooms are clean and comfortable, staff very welcoming and friendly.
I recommend this place to families and couples.
We miss the place already !

Its beautifull hotel, very kind personal. The staff will do everything. Nothing is a problem. Clean beautiful pools. very romantic place. Clean rooms every day. The cuisine is excellent only there could be more fish. There is little fish in the kitchen. It is often repeated, but it is delicious. we lack ice cream and bigger snacks.

There are two hotels that are under one owner - Samaki and Palumbo. We stayed at Samaki and we were very happy there. Samaki is little bit smaller than Palumbo, but it has a cozy and calm atmosphere, there is not many guest so everything is very family like. The staff at the bar and the reception are lovely, helpful and always smiling. They can speak good English and Italian and some words in Czech. The beach is shared with Palumbo and you can also share the other services in Palumbo. When there is no sea, the beach is quite busy with locals selling various things. We bought a tour to the Capital and spice plantation with Jerry and Amos...they were amazing! and it was half a price cheaper than from our travel agency, they both speak Czech an English and I believe also Italian and many more. Don't be afraid the service they provide is safe and of quality. The food in the restaurant was amazing..full of fresh fruit (mango, coconut, watermelon etc), amazing local and international salads, variety of meat and side dishes and of course desserts
All in all it was a lovely holiday with a great Christmas Eve full of joy and happiness. I would definitely recommend both Samaki and Palumbo to anyone who seeks rest and good vibes.

Everything is in place to make this a wonderful lodge, but something went wrong along the way.

Who wants to go to a lodge on the east-coast of Zanzibar and NOT see the Ocean ? From most rooms in Samaki you get to see the garden behind the main building. How this place is constructed is actually a very good analogy for how everything works in Samaki, they win and you as a client loose.

They want to have as many rooms as possible so lets just build all the room 90 degrees on the coast behind the main building and we can get more guests. Each guest gets no view, but Samaki can fit more people. They win, the guests loose.

They have an all-inclusive system (which I personally hate) preventing clients to "slide off" and spend money elsewhere, Samaki wins, the guests loose. You may find something in the buffet you'll consider edible, but food is qualitywise below any standard you should expect, but at least its cheap for Samaki so they win, you loose.

When you book the rooms all prices are in USD or in Tanzanian Shillings. However, whatever you consume during your stay is in Euro ! You buy a bottle of actually cheap mediocre South African wine and it will cost you 13-18 Euro. It would have been expensive enough in USD, but its in Euro. Same bottle in the shop is 3-5 USD. Yes, I understand Samaki has to make money and I'm not really conserned about that, but since you also price it in Euro and your credit card machine accepts amounts in USD it is also an exchange rate decided by Samaki that counts. Samaki wins, you as a client loose.

You want a beach towel, pay deposit... You know, just in case so that Samaki won't loose.

I'm afraid Samaki has distanced itself from what people come to TZ/Zanzibar to experience. Fantastic people, fantastic sunrises and the beaches. Samaki could have been anywhere in the world and it wouldn't have made a difference since its secluded from its surroundings. As a client you're just a tool and the better they are at using this "tool" the more money they make.

Dear Sven, sorry if something was wrong during your stay but it was not our fault. All your dissatisfactions arise from the fact that wine was too expensive and I'm sorry to tell you this but the alcohol in Zanzibar costs so much, in all hotels you will find the same prizes. From here you started a big complain regarding everything was possible even if we tryed to explain you all the reasons. We have actually 14 sea view rooms and is really easy to book them ( just a simple e mail with a note) Anyway, everywhere you can find garden view rooms or am I wrong??? Last observation: we are accepting 3 different values and the guests can choose how to pay. Sorry but your review is not concrete and questionable. Next time you will travel in a Muslim country please remind that alcohol fees are almost 100% of the value. Anyway thanks for coming and regards from all our staff! Carolina

After having spent the previous week and then some in a whirlwind traveling from NYC to Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, and finally Zanzibar my wife and I were in need of some peace, relaxation, and a romantic beach. We arrived at the hotel via our own driver. I would recommend this, as a much cheaper price may be negotiated for the trip from Zanzibar Town to Uroa. We paid 40,000 TZS, or $25.00 at the exchange rate at the time. We had to press very hard to get this price, and the cabal of taxi drivers around the ferry port were less than thrilled. We ended up using the same driver on the way out, get the number of your driver and get the same price.

We were greeted warmly, and a Masai warrior helped us with our luggage - very cool! After complimentary juice from the reception staff we were taken to our room. It had a huge king size bed with mosquito netting, which we were thankful for. The room was very clean, by far the cleanest on our trip. A few minutes after we settled in a maid showed with soap, and to check that we had enough towels. Our room even had a little love seat couch with its own mosquito net, which I imagine would be perfect for a kid, or friend to sleep on.

Not wanting to waste the remaining daylight we headed down to the beach. Wow! Perfect, soft white sand, and crystal clear azure water. It was on the same level as beaches we've been to in Bali, one of our top 10 beaches for sure. Yes there was a lot of seaweed. It would be nice if it was completely cleared, maybe that's something they could find a way to do economically in the future. The Masai warriors guard the entire property as stated in other reviews, as well as the entrance to and from the beach. We had previously spent some time with the Masai in Kenya, and it was interesting to talk to them and hear how they wound up all the way in Zanzibar.

When night came my wife went to shower and get ready for dinner, and I spent some time relaxing in the pool. It was one of the most beautiful pools I've even been in, not for the actual pool itself, but for the setting it is in. The facade of the main building is really well maintained and gives a cool Mediterranean/African vibe. I asked at the reception if the pool closed at a certain time and was told I could use it anytime I liked, day or night. Floating on my back alone (we seemed to be the only guests the day we were there, though there were many staying at the adjoining sister property) looking up at the stars, palm trees, and lights from the building was a very memorable experience.

After my swim I got ready and we went to dinner. It's served buffet style, and every dish we tried was very tasty. The staff were constantly checking to make sure we were happy and to see if we needed anything. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the mostly European dishes pandering to the Italian clientele are a little out of place to travellers seeking a more authentic experience. Out of the Italian fare I found the bruschetta particularly good, as were the the other cold salads. My wife and I both had a beer with our meal, and the beer selection, while not overly expansive had Tanzanian beers which we appreciated, and enjoyed.

We slept really well, the room was equipped with both a ceiling fan and a wall-mounted air conditioner. We only used the fan and it was perfect. Super peaceful.

In the morning we went back to the beach, where we saw the local people farming seaweed. It was interesting to see how they do it with grids of string suspended between wooden stakes.

Breakfast was included in the price of our room, and like dinner it was served buffet style. In the middle of the buffet bar they had a staff member whipping up made-to-order omelettes and pancakes. We found three separate types of fresh squeezed juice, a selection of pastries, sausage, eggs, oatmeal, and cereals. There was also a bottled water dispenser for clean drinking water, matching another in the lobby of Samaki available all the time.

Overall my wife and I both enjoyed our stay very much. Except for the seaweed on the beach we didn't have a single complaint, and had a very romantic time. For the price I felt the room itself (including breakfast, we did not go for the more expensive half, or full board options) was a great value. The alcoholic beverages and food were overpriced compared to off property dining, but on par with what you'd expect in a resort-style setting. We were also at a disadvantage compared to European guests, as beer and dinner prices were in euros with an unfavorable exchange into dollars. If we are back in Zanzibar in the future we definitely stay here again.
