This was a great place to stay! We had to book a last minute trip and I knew we had to quarantine for 7 or so days, so I really wanted someplace nice, but not too expensive as we had to spend more time in Barbados than originally planned b/c of the need to quarantine. I looked at several places...this place took the prize! The owner, Tony, and the property manager, Michelle, were wonderful! Very responsive and helpful. The condo is on the 3rd floor with stunning views. The place was very clean and well appointed with very tasteful and pleasing furniture and decor. We were greeted by 2 towel swans placed on the master bed! What a nice touch! It was great to fall asleep to the sound of the waves crashing on the shore every night. There is a little beach there on the property where you can swim. However, the water is a little rough there and there are some rocks. There is a pool right there by the ocean. We spent a lot of time on the balcony watching the surfers and feeding the birds. They also had high speed internet/wifi enough for 2 phones, a tablet, and a laptop without problems. Quarantining was tough...but quarantining in such a lovely place made it bearable.

There are a few beaches within walking distance on either side of the Condo with more calm and less rocky waters. The sun never hits the balcony, but once you can go out- the sun is available by the pool. No view of sunrise or sunset as it is south-facing.

I would note that almost everything is closed on Sundays and religious holidays- so you need to be aware and prepare. There aren't a lot of places that deliver. The restaurant food in the area is average and a little overpriced. The best place we ate was Irie Foods.

If we come back to Barbados, we would definitely stay at Almost/Perfect Heaven. Thank you Tony and Michelle!

We had a wonderful holiday here in October. Initially worried about the weather as it is "rainy season" but only a few heavy showers which blew over quickly and then it's back to sunshine.

Barbara couldn't have been more helpful in advising us about choosing the best apartment and advice on what to bring and where to go.

Ricardo (the concierge) is an absolute star. He was there to meet us in person. He made sure everything was perfect for us, and even helped us to arrange our wedding. He put us in touch with a local taxi driver, Michael, who we then used for the rest of our trip.

The apartment block is immaculate, as is the pool area.

The apartment itself is on what we would call 2nd floor with entrance on the ground floor and pool on lower ground floor. Apartment furnished beautifully, and bigger than it looks in the photos, The views are exquisite! Our hot water system broke and Ricardo had a team out within 24hrs and all repaired! Friendly maid service 3 times per week - and included beach towels!

The area is brilliant, plenty to do and see within walking distance. Beaches are great. Convenience store is few mins walk away, and there are a couple of bigger supermarkets 15 mins away who provide a shuttle service.

Barbara's boat seascape was out of the water and we wanted to swim with turtles. Her recommended agent did not have a tour on the day we wanted, so we chose "Calypso" This was a fantastic (and great value day) out. I strongly recommend it.

Plenty of good restaurants around, but we particularly recommend "crave" just across the road. This is a new restaurant, and was quiet. Due to the placing of the signs we thought it was the reggae lounge which is behind. As a result we almost missed the best meal of our trip! The food was exceptionally well prepared, they were very friendly, and it was also the best value meal of our trip.

Thanks again to Barbara, Ricardo, and all the staff at the condos for making our trip unforgettable.

Recommendations;

Crave Restaurant (as above best food and value - just a bit quiet as it's new)
Cafe Sol (huge portions happy hour margaritas, chocolate milkshake)
Harlequin (Good but not great and not cheap)
Bellinis - (gets mixed reviews but we had a good meal here and reasonable prices)

Calypso Cruses - 5 hours personalised service snorkel with turtles, shipwrecks all food and drink and tranfsers

Fish Fry on Friday at Oistins. Great atmosphere great food dancing. Get a ZR bus man!

Try travelling on the ZR bus - $2 and just jump on and off wherever!

Beaches - we only tried dover beach and sandy beaches beside the apartments - both fine - dover beach bit busier.

(I would advise insect repellant on the beach - don't know if we were just unlucky - but we got bitten bad by the sand flies!)

Thank you for your review Damian. It was a pleasure to help you with your accommodation choice all those months ago. I'm so happy Lorna said YES and Ricardo was able to put it all together for your wedding. It's a shame Seascape was not operating, we re-open for the winter season in November, however luckily Calypso was a great alternative for you. The management and staff look forward to welcoming you back to St Lawrence Beach Condominiums in the future. All the best Barbara

We have just got home from a brilliant week back in Barbados . It was our 8th visit , but our first stay at St Lawrence Beach Condos . We did a private rental through Tony the owner of #13 Ocean Vista. The apartment was spotlessly clean and well maintained , as is the rest of the building . If you want to be in the middle of the action then this is the place to stay . Once your night out is over , just cross the street , close the door and it becomes so quiet . A 5 minute walk in either direction takes you to 2 fantastic beaches , although there is a small beach area at the apartments. The week we were there ( 7th Oct ) it was a bit quiet , but it suited us . It was like having our own private pool. We have stayed at many places up and down The Gap , but this is definitely the best location yet . We will certainly return .

This condo complex is lovely. Real WOW moment when you enter and see nothing but the beautiful Caribbean sea. All of the staff at this complex are very friendly and helpful from security to housekeeping to maintenance. I was disappointed with a few things, though.

I've stayed at many vacation rental condos and, sadly, this one was not the best. First, I felt communication with the owner could have been better. She provided us with written instructions, many of them wrong: key pad entry to the pool area, wrong. Safe code: wrong (we locked our passports in and couldn't get them out until after the weekend when the property manager helped us). No hot water for the first weekend because no one showed us the switch to it in the 2nd bedroom. When we turned it on, the water heater leaked.

No instructions for how to use the dishwasher, combo washer/dryer, or microwave. All of these are European models that I found quite incomprehensible. The refrigerator was terrible! We would use the freezer to cool down beer and juice before putting it in the fridge otherwise it would stay warm. Therefore, we could not buy many eggs or cheese, etc., because they would go bad. Most condos I've rented had a few items in the kitchen, like spices. Not this one! There were also no large pots and pans (family sized) or plastic storage containers.

Master bed was like sleeping on the floor.

Dining room is on the outdoor balcony. This was lovely as the tradewinds were very comfortable. At least lovely until two families arrived and spent 6 hours playing Marco Polo in the pool each afternoon into the night. After 2 hours of that, it was necessary to close the door and turn on the AC, which was disappointing.

The Gap does not come alive until midnight. All of the busy clubs are directly across the street from this condo. The building next door will soon be a restaurant, too. That will add to the already blasting noise level at this condo complex. Because of the late night noise, this is not a suitable property for families with kids as the kids' bedroom is facing the clubs. We would go out to dinner and walk the street (poor sidewalk configurations so be careful). All we saw were other couples looking for something to do at 10:00 pm. I'm very confused as to why some of these clubs don't have earlier hours to attract the more mature (and perhaps more wealthy) visitors.

Having visited, I would say the Accra Beach area is far superior. Easy cab or bus ride to The Gap for dinner and clubs without the hassle of living with the bumping bass every night.

We stayed in Calypso in early April for 11 nights and had a wonderful time. My two boys aged 6 and 4 loved the pool and when they'd had enough, they sat on the patio playing. We were able to truly relax on the loungers! The staff were all really friendly, the place was really well maintained, I couldn't recommend it enough - it was the perfect set up for us. Also, as our bedrooms opened onto the pool area, we didn't have to think about packing beach bags as we could go back into our rooms to get anything we'd forgotten. When we did go to the beach there were plenty of beautiful beaches close by. We will be returning!!

My wife and I had never been to Barbados before but we had heard wonderful reviews from friends and family who had been.

BOOKING

I booked this 1 bedroom apartment based on the pictures posted on the website, the pictures were beautiful, a little too beautiful for the price I thought. I sent off an email to Jane Shattuck just asking, "will we be in the apartment you have posted and are those pictures recent and accurate?". She assured me that they were recent and the apartment looks exactly as shown in the pictues. I then proceeded to book this property for 12 nights.
So I have to tell you, those pictures do NOT represent how beautiful the apartment really is! The apartment is WAY MORE beautiful, the pictures do not do it justice, it is sooooo nice OMG!
The furnishings and artwork are of the highest quality, Jane has awesome taste. We have sent her several emails asking her where she got pictures, sculpture and furniture.
Even tho she was away in Portland Oregon visiting family, she responded to my emails almost immediately!
Jane will send you a ton of information about the apartment and about the area. I am a stickler for detail, but I found ALL of the answers to my questions in the information Jane provided.
Monica met us at the apartment shortly after we arrived in Barbados, showed us around the place and got us nicely settled. She also came back and tidied up the place changed the linens and towels several times during our stay.

THE APARTMENT

The bedroom (and the living room) looks over the ocean surf and has wall to wall windows on two sides. The windows can open up acordian style which is so nice to listen to the ocean and enjoy a lovely sea breeze. Be careful you don't open them too wide or you may have a dove or other bird perching on your window sill. We enjoyed our morning coffee watching fisherman leave for the day and turtles swim in the bay....heaven!!!
Two full bathrooms which are both very large, spacious and well equipped.
The kitchen had everything you need, appliances, pots and pans, plates, glasses (both glass and plastic, for by the pool). Previous occupants have left several condiments and spices behind. We did have to purchase a few condiments, but not a big deal, the nearby convenience store has most everything.
There is a bbq by the pool, we seemed to be the only people using it (4 times). I think folks were a bit afraid of dropping a match into the bbq to get it started because the igniter is broken.

LOCATION

St Lawrence Gap is a wonderful strip just south of Bridgetown about 5 minutes by bus or cab. The Gap is far enough away from the cruise ship port that you don't get the crowds from the 2+ ships that come in everyday. We wandered down the Gap everyday to get lunch, grab a drink, listen to music, purchase souvenirs, buy supplies from the awesome convenience store. We absolutely LOVED the Gap, I wouldn't stay anywere else in Barbados and we saw the entire island (West, North, East and South).

We did a tour with Seymour, what a great guy and so knowledgable about the island, I tried but could not stump him with my millions of questions.
In about five hours we toured the entire island, you gotta see the caves on the north end of Barbados (not Harrison Caves, we never got there, too commercial I think) and you have to go to St Nicholas Abbey Rum also toward the north end, it is an amazing house and small rum production facility. This is a small batch facility so you can get an engraved bottle especially for you!

Cabs are a bit pricey to go to Oistens, Bridgetown or Holetown. We paid $25 BBD for a trip from Bridgetown to Holetown but found out later that $2 BBD each you can take the mini YR vans that travel to/from in all directions, just flag them down. Usually quite full but so cheap and nothing is very far away.

FOOD

We had breakfast every morning in the apartment, sometimes lunch and often we cooked our own dinner. We brought our own Costco beef (oops), and purchased our fish locally at Oistens. Fish is cheap in Barbados, meat is very expensive and not local (duuhhh). Don't quote me on if this is 100% legal, you do your own research.
Food is a fair bit more expensive both in the restaurants and at the stores. Beer is cheap (yeah Banks!, 3 for $10 Barbadian/$5 U.S. on the Gap).
Primo was soooooo good, but expensive. Cafe Sol was good but very slow, Cocktail Kitchen was really good. Take advantage of the Happy Hours! Check out Jane's recommendations, they are spot on!

SCUBA DIVING and SNORKELLING

We Scuba Dived 3 days (6 dives) with Rogers Scuba, they were just great and will pick you up and drop you off each day, a nice little benefit. Lots of wrecks and wonderful reefs in Barbados and so many turtles. Highly recommend Mark if you get him, although he will NOT stop talking and telling stories, but a super nice nice guy and very professional.

We swam with the turtles just out from of the apartment in the bay to the right of the pier. They are so tame and we followed them as they ate the sea grass, so sweet.

We are coming back to Barbados next year and we will ABSOLUTELY staying at one of Janes rentals. She is the BEST and her place (Watercolours we stayed in) are so lovely and nice and clean and well equipped and wonderful.

See you next year Jane

Hubby and I just got back from our weeks stay at the condos - #8 One Love. Very comfortable, clean and safe. Great location. Everything and more was provided in the condo for our stay. Booked through Jane but dealt with her assistant Monica during our stay. Before our trip, Jane made the reservation process very easy and was sooooo helpful in answering our questions and setting us up for a great trip. Monica was very helpful, greeting us upon arrival and was helpful during our stay. Pool area is great right at the waterfront and the little beach there is really nice too. We enjoyed the sunrises from our condo veranda and the sunsets at the pool. The view the condo is paradise. The condo is very close to lots of restaurants, and walking distance to Dover Beach. Also, just down the street is the bus stop for the Z - bus's which was handy to take into Oistens or Bridgetown. Lots of taxi's on the Gap. Massy's Big B Grocery is about a 20min walk and then take the shuttle back or taxi back. WiFi free and handy. When we come back to Barbados we will be staying again at St. Lawrence Beach Condos and will be recommending it to many in the mean time. Thanks Jane, Monica and Michael (security guard).

We stayed at the St. Lawrence Gap Condos again from 7/3-7/10/14. It was wonderful!! As I must have echoed in my first review, the location simply can't be beat. The condos are located right across from the action....nightclubs, restaurants, everything is at your disposal. There's even a convenience store about 3 minutes away (although it's super overpriced).

Ricardo was amazingly helpful. The apartment that we stayed in (Sea Glass) was just as well maintained as it was the first time. The ONLY issue about the facility is that the beach area is not suitable for swimming. However, with Dover beach a beautiful stroll up the road... you're certainly not inconvenienced.

We will be back again next year!

Booking through Jane Shattock was easy and she made sure we had everything we needed to know before we arrived. Our studio apartment was large with a four poster bed and a lovely ensuite bathroom comprising his and her wash basins, a large corner bath and spacious shower. Our patio opened out directly onto the garden and pool.

The freshwater pool was so good and we used it several time a day. The condos are blessed with a small beach with a wooden pier. The colours of the sky, the deep blue sea with crashing waves beyond the reef and the calmer aquamarine sea inside the reef were spectacular. We swam with sea turtles several times right off the beach.

Heather, Ricardo, Sandra, Jerry and many more staff were very friendly, easy to speak to and nothing was too much for them. We met several other holidaymakers staying at the condos and got on well with them. Most were British or Canadian couples.

As we did not want to hire a car, the location was great as most of what we needed was a short stroll including a small convenience store. It is also very handy for the buses to Bridgetown and the rest of the island. We went to nearly all the bars and restaurants on The Gap and soon found our favourites. We knew the happy hours by heart.

The trade off for this location is that it can be a bit noisy at night for some people. It did not bother us..

We will return.

Complex is a set of privately owned condo’s, a large number of which are rented out. Location wise the wrap-around penthouse to the west would be my preferred choice if I came back. Stayed in #13 on the third floor. Condo very modern, clean and spacious. Wonderful pool and ocean views from the lounge area and bed 1 as you can see from other travellers’ photo’s. The patio doors to bed 1 wouldn’t open which was a shame. Small kitchette with minimal pots and pans, cutlery and crockery and the only table was a round table on the balcony designed for 4 max. Came with a dishwasher and washer dryer, both very useful if you had tablets. Nice touch was the ice packs in the freezer but only one plastic coffee mug…. you need plastic to take down to the poolside. There were 4 plastic beakers. Powerful rainfall shower at poolside changing area. Plenty of off-street parking. Issues with Digital TV, not many channels available especially if you like your English football. Wi-Fi also hit and miss. Large laundry at ground level mostly used by the condo cleaners. Ipad-size safe with key.
Complex enjoys an excellent position in SLG near to the entrance, right opposite the Reggae Lounge but not troubled by any club noise because of the noisy sea and the wind blowing in the right direction, mind you it didn’t seem that busy at all. Ate and drank at Café Sol and Brasil. Sol have 241 special nights on particular drinks. Drank also at Chez Max with the wonderful view back across the small bay to Pisces Restaurant, and at a more basic non-descript establishment further along the Gap. Enjoyed the ambiance on the bay in front of the Yellow Bird Hotel although the crickets were very very noisy. Apart from Bridgetown bus station, the Gap was the only place we were troubled by people asking for money on the street.
The small pool is actually bigger than we thought judging by the photo’s but the area quickly became busy with guests. The small beach out the front was a no-go as it was just too rough, but there are calmer beaches at Dover and Worthing, ten minute walks away in either direction. You can’t walk from the Condo’s along the beach to other beaches. There is more chance of spotting marine life at Worthing though, plus the base for Seascape fishing who we used on the snorkelling/turtle swim at Carlisle bay. Recommended but the boat stops way offshore so be prepared for a walk up to your neck in water
Very small supermarket about 2 minute walk, another larger one at the Dover end of the Gap but you have also have two fairly close together in Worthing about 10-15 minute walk away in the other direction along the busy main road. The Rum was 18% cheaper than at the duty free shop going home. Open 7 days a week.
2 dollar buses and ZR reggae buses were plentiful and frequent to Bridgetown and Oistens from th emain road but were quite full most of the time, and very full and slow during rush hours. Full fare taxis were plentiful and empty… now there’s a surprise! Didn’t venture to Oistens Fish Fry as the heavens opened but the locals rave about it. We did visit Oistens during the day and there isn’t much else there. No late night shopping in Bridgetown.
Would I return, yes I would, maybe we timed it right but it didn’t seem full of loud tourists, the complex was first class, the scenery and ambiance around the SLG entrance to die for, plenty of places to walk to, excellent beaches, good food, and close to the main drag to catch public transport.

Can you walk along the beach to a more swimable section. Also is there a grocery store nearby.
Answer from tony h
If you walk 50m west on the road you'll come to Little Bay beach where you can swim and walk to to the reefs. This beach connects to Carib Beach and Cacrabank beach, which in total gives you a stretch of about 1k of beaches and calm water, mostly protected by the reefs offshore. To the east you can get on to Dover Beach, which is also about 1k long. The first access is through Pure Ocean beach bar/ restaurant, about 300m away. There's a mini-mart about 100m east and a small grocery store about 600m away. Then there are 2 larger supermarkets about 1k to the east on the main coast road. At least one of them offers a free shuttle ride back to the condos

what's best currency to take to Barbados? Barbados dollar or us dollar which is more commonly used
Answer from tony h
Bridgetown, Barbados
Sterling is fine and you can convert to Bds$ here. You'll get current exchange rate at commercial banks as well as many stores & supermarkets. US$ are widely accepted too at fixed rate Bds$2=US$1. But don't convert sterling to US$ and then to Bds$ - you'll be paying 2 forex commissions.
