Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Was so looking forward to celebrating Hogmanay at The Glenavon in Tomintoul with the locals and visitors. Arrived at about 9.30pm and there was very few guests, The place was freezing, nobody took there coats off as it was so cold. There was no live band/music and there was no atmosphere. Left before the bells so disappointed.

Dropped in for a beer and as an aging female solo traveller I was made to feel very welcome by both the barman and the locals. Good beer and the barman also went out of his way to help me when I had a problem with onward transportation.

Met the owner Graham and his dog Lucy as we enjoyed the bar. The staff was very friendly. They allowed us to buy into breakfast since they weren’t fully booked and even helped us set up a ride to our next destination. Overall just traveling through this was the easiest recommendations we got and most helpful.

A family of 4 staying in the quaint village of Tomintoul. We visited the local pub GlenAvon and was greeted by a friendly dog (Lucy) and a cosy open fire (just what you need on blustery Autumn evening) The pub is very characterlistic with a real rustic charm. The owner and barman was friendly and welcoming. It's so much better to be able to go to an authentic Scottish pub rather than a unrealistic charactless pub. With local ales, gins and whiskies to choose from (Proberly too much choice!) Great pub would love to return, someday....

Booked the Glenavon hotel for one night for family visit . Lovely small hotel in the heart of the Cairngorms national park in Tomintoul the highest village in the highlands. Met Graeme the owner he was friendly and efficient , the hotel is small and homely. He took us to our twin room which was spacious , bright , and clean with tea coffee making facilities , tv, and a lovely big shower in the bathroom. There is a bar serving food and drink with a log fire to cosy up to at night. The hotel also has a Snooker table and nice relaxed atmosphere . We walked around the local area an area of natural beauty with lovely walks , outdoor activities such as horse riding and fishing. There was a heritage museum next to the hotel with lots of interesting facts, artefacts and history on the area. We enjoyed chatting to locals and relaxing in the beautiful surroundings . We both slept well checking out at 11am and then took a last drive around before returning back home

Initially thought we'd have our evening meal here but the interior was a bit off-putting so settled for a takeaway burger and fries. They were delicious but not enough to tempt us to eat in the Glenavon itself.

We spent a week staying at The Glenavon with our two older children and can highly recommend it. Having driven up from Edinburgh, we were looking for a country holiday far away from city distractions, and we certainly got it in Tomintoul. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable, and the pub itself is beautiful, with a big open fire, great food and a cosy atmosphere. Just what we were looking for over winter. I cannot speak highly enough of the owners and staff, all of whom were very friendly and welcoming. And a special mention for Baileys the dog, who pretty much owns the bar! If you're looking for a quiet country holiday, close to castle ruins and with plenty of good walks, Tomintoul is the place, and The Glenavon is the place to stay.
