Pesca Maya Fishing Lodge opened its doors on January 1996 and has quickly become one of the Yucatan's most popular fishing destinations and with good reason. The lodge is located 90 miles south of Cancun in the 1.3 million acre Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. Situated on a long, narrow strip of barrier beach, the lodge is virtually surrounded by water. There are 11 rooms in 3 buildings, all with A/C and private bathroom with walk-in showers, most with oceanview. Located in a solitary white sand beach, turquoise water and a magnificent coral reef at 90 yards from the beach. Serious fishing, exciting tours, beautiful spots, nice and comfortable accommodations, good food and personal attention is our mission.

I visited Pesca for the second time this year. I brought 7 friends for 3 days fishing. They now are in a location called Casa Celeste which a beautiful, modern 4 bedroom building on the ocean. The staff, led by Martha, is great. You feel at home. The fishing was great ( I got my first grand slam the second day)! The guides were all good: Henry, Daurin, Poncho, Issa. Great variety of fish and places to fish: flats, mangroves, ocean, ship wreck, channels, etc. Layla is a great person to work with to plan your trip. We had fishermen from Oregon, Tennessee, Florida, and England. All had a good time. The food and drinks were phenomenal. Authentic Mexican cuisine. I have all over fishing (Amazon, Patagonia, Caribbean, etc). This is my favorite!

My son (9yo) and I fished with Cesar for the day and loved it. He worked very hard to get me into the bone fish. I am a novice saltwater fly fisherman and he really helped me get close and coached me through all the moves. We caught a few bonefish and snapper. Another boat caught a large permit. Cesar also set my son up for some great spinning rod catches. We did not stay at the lodge but would love to in the future. Be prepared for a long day. Travel takes 3-4 hrs round trip- stuck in traffic, bouncing down rough roads, speeding full throttle across the bay. Absolutely beautiful part of the world and look forward to going back.

This was our second trip to Ascension Bay for my husband and I through Yellowdog Fly Fishing Adventures to Pesca Maya fishing lodge. Unfortunately Pesca Maya has had some damage so they have moved their operation to the Sol Caribe (a small beachfront resort up the road from Pesca Maya) located on the Seaside of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, noted for its’ pristine beach in front of the Great American Barrier Reef. Lilah and Marta (Pesca Maya Lodge) greeted us upon arrival and introduced us to Lupita (Sol Caribe Manager) and her staff. They were all fantastic! Lilah and Marta made sure we had everything we needed, comfortable and well taken care of during our 7 night, 5 day guided fly fishing trip. The food was fantastic, the beachfront restaurant beautiful, Antonio’s margaritas great and amazing staff at the resort. A treat Lilah had for us on the last night was lobster. Breaking bread and sharing great conservation with her and her husband Rogelio was delightful. Now for the fantastic fishing in Ascension Bay, the Sian Ka an Biosphere Reserve with Dayton (our guide) and Julian (assistant). We have fished with Daurin and Julian on our last time there and requested them. Daurin is so knowledgeable of fishing the Bay, your ability and putting you on fish. He and Julian are so patient and Daurin’s instruction to help you catch and land fish is unbelievable along with a fun time always! He is always changing up reels, weights, line, flies and rods to give you the best possibility in any conditions to catch fish. Our days on the water were glorious with beautiful waters to wade, fish, eat lunch and even swim in pristine settings. I will miss all from this trip and we will be back. ❤️ To all!! Wow what an adventure. This was my third multi day trip to Pesca Maya.booked through Yellowdog Fly Fishing Adventures. Oh boy it did not dissapoint. The new location they are using Sol Caribe is very nice . The rooms are clean spacious and well kept. The location is butiful on a clean private strech of beach. If i had one improvement needed would be Air Conditioning added. The food was fresh made to order and staf were more than happy to serve you . Now on to the Fishing . I had the pure pleasure of spending 5 days with the two best guides in Ascension Bay Daurin Xec and his great assistant Julian. I am a spinning fisherman and my catch and release targets were Bonfish Permit and juvenile Tarpon in the mangroves. And what a time we had . 71 bonefish. 14 Tarpon 4 Permit including a 20+lbs Donkey that took 50 min to land . I caught a big Cobia countless jacks .a shark and a big Cuda. This was the best fishing trip i have had in 53 years .

For some reason my long review yesterday did not get published. My follow up did get in. Two of us had a great stay (4 night 3 fish days). Everything was wonderful from management to staff to guides to beach to food to rooms. The guides were Henry and Cesar. They were the best. We caught bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, and a large shark. We saw manatees and a large crocodile. Beautiful and vast area We were treated like family. I sent a follow-up review yesterday which is actually before this one which had some helpful tips if you come.

I need to suggest a couple of useful tips if you are going to Pesca and are serious about fishing. I highly recommend you bring your own rods and reels and tackle. I was very happy that I had my own equipment. I had an 8 weight fly rod and reel and good spinning outfit with 20 lb line. I researched and brought my own flies and tackle because these things are not readily available. Be smart with the sun. Bugs were not a problem for us but like any place I would bring repellant. You will have a blast if you go!

This review is not about the lodge itself, but about the fishing excursion they offer to anyone. We were staying about an hour away, just north of Tulum and wanted to do some fishing in Ascension Bay. Transportation was included but the cost is still quite high for what you get. I paid US$690 plus US$45 for two licenses, one for myself and one for my son. I had emailed the organizer (Pesca Maya Fishing) that we did not have our fishing equipment with us so I wanted to use the ones that they said they had. They also said that we could buy tackle from them directly. I assumed that the guides that came with the package would recommend what were the best lures to buy/use. However, after a 1 1/2 hour van ride and a one hour boat ride to get to the lodge, there were no lures at all available to buy. Luckily, the guide had some of his own we could use (but very limited). The rods and reels were very old and worn out (and cheap). One of the reels only had about 20 feet of line on it. We needed to go to a local marina so the guide could get a proper reel that had line. That wasted 45 minutes of our six hour guided trip. We did catch about 20 fish (all small), but the guides did the best they could with what they had. Oh, and bring food. The “breakfast” was one scrambled egg and a small piece of toast. Lunch consisted of two small sandwiches. We did manage to see a pod of dolphins (about 5 feet from the boat), a lot of birds (osprey, pelicans, etc.) and one large crocodile. That was definitely a big plus to the day. Overall, if you bring you’re own equipment and food, it should be a good excursion, as the guides know where to fish.

"The Pesca Maya Lodge proper" was damaged by hurricane Grace and they have moved their operation to the Sol Caribe Lodge down the road. It is a beautiful location right on the ocean. The staff friendly, food excellent and rooms very nice. There is water available in the room which was a welcome addition. The rooms do not have AC. I was there in August and it was hot and humid. At night, with the ocean breeze and ceiling fans I was able to sleep but AC would be a welcome addition. Probably not the best place to honey moon. Wifi is available but slow and unreliable. Pesca Maya included transportation from Cancun airport in the package price and Filipe was waiting in a modern van to pick me up. It is a 2+ hour drive south to Tulum and then they take you another 50 minutes south by boat to avoid the really bad beach road. My guide Poncho was waiting when the van arrived and took me to the lodge in his 23' Panga. He picked me up in the morning to fish and dropped me back at the lodge both days. The day started with wading for Bonefish on the flats and then poling for Permit and Tarpon once the sun was higher. Although I did not catch any Permit I did have several legit shots and with better casts and a bit of luck I should have landed one. They are elusive. The Bonefish are numerous but not large. All the Bones I caught were clones in the 1.5, 2# range. One could probably catch them all day if you choose to. Pesca Maya has a great program to help develop younger locals become Professional guides and we had an apprentice guide with us both days. Cesar, the apprentice guide was very helpful and had good eyes. He did have a habit of wading in front of me to the left which cut off my ability to cast 9, 10, 11. Most guides I have waded with stay just behind my left shoulder so not sure if they do it differently at PM or if Cesar was just enthusiastic. I wish I had tuned up my casting a bit before I went because although I am a competent caster I did not fish last year with the pandemic and had not spent enough time in the park to get target sharp. By the second day I was doing well but I had already missed a couple good shots on Permit. On one we had 2 large Permit following a huge 100+lb Ray. I laid out what I thought was a perfect 75' cast across the Rays back intending for the fly to wash back to the feeding Permit. Unfortunately I must have landed the fly within the Ray's field of vision because he pulled up, ate the fly and canceled any hopes at the two Permit. Bring several leaders plus tippet material. 12# for Bonefish, 16# for Permit and 50 or 60# for Tarpon. Bring your own flies or buy them when you arrive at the lodge. I think they charged $4 a fly for a few that Pancho recommended in addition to the ones I had brought. I brought 2 rods but we still changed flies and leaders often depending on the target which is why Poncho likes to have 3 rigged rods ready to go. You don't have to change the leader if you see a Tarpon with a third rigged 50# leader rod. Overall a great 2 day trip. Unfortunately we were dodging thunderstorms and did not have bright sun for extended periods but made the most of our time conditions permitting. One more fyi - Pesca Maya can arrange for you to get a Covid test at the lodge for the return travel requirement but it costs $125. I choose to get it at the Cancun airport before my flight on the day of departure. The test cost $16.00 and it took about 45 minutes total to get email results. There were 3 people ahead of me in line to get the test.

My 11 year old son Gage and I fished for 4 days last week at Pesca Maya and spent one night in the lodge. Gage is good with a trout fly rod, but we assumed the Mexico trip would be much more learning than catching. But thanks to outstanding, patient instruction by our guides Pancho and Angel, Gage landed 17 bonefish on our last day. For the both of us, an exceptional trip in every single regard. We loved our stay at Pesca Maya – the AC works well, the rooms are unique and comfortable, the food was wonderful, and our hosts were nothing short of magnificent. I cannot give a higher recommendation.
