The night I live in this ryokan it was raining, the pitter-patter was so aid-sleeping I would never forget. The courtyard is moderately designed. I tried the private onsen for 30 min, it is a romantic experience, I can enjoy the scene while in the onsen pool. After onsen, drinking cold milk and read some western books are enjoyable. The... Although not much to look at from the outside, the stay at the hotel was lovely. We were in a roomy traditional tatami room with a view of the small, pretty garden, with very attentive hospitality. We were served an excellent kaiseki ryori meal in the room, different dishes on each day, with standout Tai fish and miso aubergine. There... More

This is a mid-sized hotel with several dozens of rooms. Really a perfect pick for us. We were greeted by a guy who spoke a good level of English. The room we picked was of a good size facing the garden. The beds were comfy and the room was spotless. Japanese style with western-style mattresses - my favorite combo! We... More

For a place in Aso, I must say it's really nice. I spend the package for the dinner and breakfast. The onsen for individual are free but you must book at check in. I like the one air. Dinner is really nice. Personalise menu. I ended up fairly happy except for 1 thing, the Internet repeated outside my room doesn't... More

It is a rather small boutique onsen hotel with limited public facility. Location is a bit boring, not much around the area. Room condition is mediocre, not much view. limited TV channels. onsen quality is ok. Dinner and breakfast are delicious. Price is rather reasonable. Overall, not a bad experience.

We spent a night here. They are very proud of their hotel and provide a typical Japanese experience, with service and attentiveness that is much more than most Americans are accustomed to, but typical of most Japanese establishments. However, Sozankyo is more of a minshuku than a ryokan (one step lower). Using a checklist, they hit all the points –... More

We booked 3 rooms and requested soft food for one of our friends due to a medical condition. However, this was not prepared for him and when we asked for something soft like porridge, they said they don't have. He ended up not eating half of the food. The rooms allocated to us were on the 3rd floor. We had... More

Simply the best. I've been to many ryokan across japan. Still yet to find another one to make par with Sozankyo! Dinner and bf served in the dining hall. Absolutely fantastic quality of food, presentation and service. Japanese style room is nicely decorated and well kept. Above all, it's reasonably priced. Great value for money. Book with them and look... More

We had stayed in more expensive onsen hotels the nights before in different parts of Kyushu and we must say this hotel was highly comparable to those but for much better value. Our one night stay included two meals. We very much enjoyed the cuisine made from fresh local produce. The service from the staff was also excellent. Remember to... More
