The Pierhouse Hotel garners consistent acclaim for its immaculate cleanliness and friendly, attentive service that greatly enhances guest experiences. While opinions on value are mixed, with some concerns regarding cost and specific dining options, the amenities, including pet-friendly policies and well-presented food, receive high marks.
Nestled on the tranquil shores of Loch Linnhe, the hotel's location offers guests stunning views, often mentioned alongside the cozy and comfortable atmosphere of the rooms. However, a few visitors note that the rooms can feel somewhat small.

We had a most memorable five days at the wonderful Pierhouse Hotel. The accommodation is comfortable and spotless and our 'superior' room had its own door to the outside and a great view across Loch Linnhe to Lismore. The staff are friendly, efficient, attentive and charming. The food is fresh, perfectly cooked and presented. Eating breakfast or dinner while watching the wee blue ferry shuttling between the pier and Lismore will be a memory to treasure. A pleasant, short walk along the loch side brings you to a friendly, well-stocked store where you can buy newspapers and fresh sandwiches for picnic lunch and there is an attractive craft shop next door. Glencoe, Fort William, Lismore, Dunstaffnage Castle, Oban and Inverary are all within easy reach making the Pierhouse Hotel an ideal base for exploring this part of the Scottish coast.

Hi Ian A Such a lovely review, thank you so much for leaving it for us. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your recent stay with us. I think that watching the Lady of Lismore plough backwards and forwards across the loch to Lismore is in equal parts soporific and exciting; but it is definitely one of the nicest ways to while away a morning or an afternoon. We hope to be able to welcome you back to The Pierhouse again in the near future. Kind regards Fiona McLean General Manager

After a three hour drive we arrived at this pretty inn! Taken to our room by a friendly guy who briefly explained about a walk that would be good for us, dinner reservation and breakfast times, room was spotless and warm. Cliff view this time and would book a sea view next time, wasn’t an issue as there was a pretty garden views to enjoy. Lovely wine and drinks list, happy tipples where had ! Food and fresh fish this plaice excels! Delicious langoustines, fish soufflé, mussels, seafood platter and lobster fish pie all tried and voted 10 out of 10, clean fresh flavours served in a circular dining room with cute views of the ferry to Lismore ( which by the way is a must do thing ) staff on their game lots of friendly banter chatter and smiles well done team! Breakfast best kippers ever, great Scottish grill, juices, coffee, fruits and more all great quality! Would we return YES we blooming will! Worth every penny

My best friend and I stayed here for one night from 30th June to 01st July 2024. We were well cared for from the moment we arrived to the minute we left. The hotel is in a gorgeous location on the shore of Loch Linnhe. We were greeted warmly upon arrival and shown to our room. We were in Room 3, which was very clean and comfortable. They provided a bowl of fresh apples, two Tunnocks wafers and two Pierhouse postcards in the room, which was a lovely touch. The presentation of the food was impressive. We both have to be very careful of what we eat and I have a milk allergy. Our dinner took a bit longer because they even went so far as to re-wash all the pans to avoid any chance of cross-contamination. Now that's superb service! I did have seafood here and can confirm it's delicious! The view from the dining room is amazing. Breakfast was also tasty. The hotel has its own merchandise. We both enjoyed our stay and I highly recommend this hotel.

We just spent 5 nights at the Pierhouse Hotel with my assistance dog (who could not have been made more welcome). We travel a lot so the bar is set quite high in terms of our standards. The Pierhouse met and exceeded them. So, what's so great about it? 1. The staff are hands down the kindest, warmest and most hospitable we have come across. Nothing was too much trouble. Special mention has to go to Bethany, Rita, David and Bobbie-Jo in the restaurant, Carol , the housekeeper (the place is spotless), Arya in the bar (gorgeous Negronis), Vil, and Caroline. 2. The food is fab. A big thank you to Michael the chef and his team who created memorable and delicious vegetarian dishes that were not even on the menu so we could have more variety (although they have a separate vegan menu). 3. The room was tasteful, and very comfortable and they have even found an accessible solution for me for when I return next year. 4. The location is heartstoppingly beautiful with magical walks from the door although you could just sit and watch the weather coming in and the Lismore ferry go back and forth. 5. It is reassuringly dog friendly. They genuinely like dogs and gave treats and strokes at every opportunity. You eat in the bar with your dog but have the most wonderful views and a cosy fire so it matters not that you are there and not in the restaurant. We preferred the bar atmosphere and hanging with the locals. So, this is one of the places to which we will return (which does not happen often as there are always so many more places to see). I even feel comfortable going there on my own (I have a disability) because I know I will be looked after and that the wonderful staff will help me if I need it. Fiona , the general manger, has created something rather splendid and unusual at the Pierhouse. One of the staff told me that they were happy to come to work because it was such a lovely place to be. Creating an environment where staff feel happy and cherished is not an easy thing and Fiona deserves thanks for fostering a culture where the staff are so wonderful that they make the customers feel like old friends. Thank you Fiona.
We loved it SO much and we look forward to returning next year.
All good wishes, Rebecca, Chris and Badger the dog.

Hi tigermole68 Just...wow! Thank you so very much for your wonderful review. I will, of course, pass on your comments to the whole team, but especially to those that you have mentioned. We all work hard to create the kind of atmosphere that you have spoken about, and it makes me very happy that you have recognised this. I have the most wonderful team here at The Pierhouse and I am incredibly proud of each and every one of them. I do hope that you will come back and see us. Once you're visited we think of you as family, so the three of you will always be welcome. With very warm regards Fiona McLean General Manager

An absolute gem of a small hotel in a superb location on the shore of Linnhe. We arrived early before check in and embarked on the ferry to the beautiful Lismore Island at 10am and walked for 2 hours and got back to have lunch which consisted of Cullen skink and some delicious local mussels in cider with a nice glass of white, We then walked on to the road to see the spectacular Stalker castle about a 10 mile round trip. We then relaxed in a very comfortable bedroom with great loch views before heading for dinner which consisted of Scottish lobster and langoustine which was incredible. The staff were outstanding from efficiency and professionalism to meeting the head chef Michael who was so friendly and explained what his aspirations are to delivering local produce to the guests fresh and adding some flair. Overall a great experience and if your are visiting this area this establishment is a must for unique Scottish hospitality , great food and comfortable accommodation . We will be back!

Aided by near perfect weather, this was a successful stay in all respects. The rooms are fresh and their design perfectly complements the idyllic (when the sun shines) setting of this bijou hotel. Clear skies meant cold nights and the wood burning stoves made for a cosy atmosphere. An upgrade from "cliff-facing" to "sea view" certainly helped.
And then there is the food! Fish eaters enjoy sumptuous fare, whilst there are a couple of tasty options for meat eaters. The full highland breakfast combines quality and quantity, saving the bother of thinking about lunch. We should also mention the very friendly and helpful staff who enhanced our stay.

Hi Steven T This is a wonderful review, thank you so much for leaving it for us. We c ompletely agree that good weather makes a stay on the west coast of Scotland near perfect, however there is also a certain charm in sitting safe and warm by the fires watching waves pound the slipway in a storm! I will be sure to pass your comments on to the whole team, and I do hope that we see you again in the future. Kind regards Fiona McLean General Manager

Arriving two thirds of the way through a two week camping holiday, the welcome could not have been warmer. The amazing team at Pierhouse welcomed us with a couple of great negronis, took our laundry in, and settled us down in front of magnificent views with a wonderful menu of glorious local seafood. Everything here is simply done and beautifully executed. We quickly decided to have all our meals here over our two night stay and we’re very glad we did. The freshest oysters, the sweetest mussels, three choices of local fish at every meal, and wonderful classics like the soufflé Arnold Bennet. Did I mention the warm and witty staff? The miraculous view? The two kinds of Tarte Tatin? My wife’s favourite langoustines?Perfect. Thank you.

It speaks volumes when the only negative I can find is I'm not a fan of 'deconstructed' bouillabaise! It's expensive but quality this good in Scotalnd does not come cheap. Lovely room with sea view, top quality dinner and excellent breakfast.

We stayed at the Pierhouse Hotel for 4 nights at the end of a journey along the west coast of Scotland. Port Appin is a lovely spot with a passenger ferry to the island of Lismore right by the hotel and stunning views over Loch Linnhe to the hills beyond.
We really liked the hotel which is characterful and cosy with woodburning stoves on the go in several spots. Our room was delightful with great views, comfortable armchairs to relax in and an excellent bathroom. The room benefitted from its own door leading out to the front which made unloading luggage very easy and a good place to remove muddy boots after a day's walk
All the hotel staff were super - friendly, helpful and attentive. The food is excellent with an emphasis on locally sourced fish, seafood and meat. The dining room also has beautiful views - a great spot to enjoy a leisurely breakfast.
The Pierhouse is perfectly placed for local walks, a hop over to explore Lismore, or a trip to Oban which is a busy ferry port for Mull and other islands. If we return to Argyll at some point, we will definitely stay at the hotel again and recommend it without any hesitation.

Hi Rocketveg What a lovely review - thank you so much for leaving it for us! We are so pleased that you had a comfortable and enjoyable stay with us recently. As you say, we are ideally placed for a visit to the Isle of Lismore and bikes (electric or pure pedal power) can be hired locally to enjoy the island. And with the excellent local larder on our doorstep we are ideally placed to showcase the amazing produce from the area. We hope to see you here again soon! Kind regards Fiona McLean General Manager

Visiting Scotland for a few weeks, I stopped for a night at The Pierhouse on the drive to the islands.
The location is lovely. The hotel itself is quite compact, with around 12 guest rooms and a restaurant and small bar area.
The room was advertised as a 'cliff facing view' but more resembled a small rockery about a metre from the window. For 165 pounds a night, it was small with only some basic room features/amenities.
As for dinner, opting for their vegetarian 'option' the soup was tasty (but extremely hot). The main of smoked aubergine was bland and dry. Service was slow and inattentive throughout. The main plate sat uncleared for around 15 minutes. And the bill included an overcharge for an additional glass of wine.
Dining aside, the primary issue was a lack of staff being present when attempting to check out at 730am. There were multiple staff around setting up for breakfast, etc. I was originally told the receptionist would be available at 745am; when this time passed the other staff member let me know they had advised them I was waiting. It was just after 8am when they made an appearance. On me providing some constructive feedback that guests should be advised if reception only opens with breakfast (as I would have paid the dinner and drinks on my card the night before), the receptionist was completely dismissive of the feedback. As it happens, I almost missed my ferry.
In short, premium hotel prices but the room facilities, dining and service are below par. Not recommended.

Hi nick164 Thank you for your feedback, although I am sorry to see that you were disappointed with aspects of your visit. We call our rear facing rooms 'Cliff Facing' to help guests distinguish from the sea facing rooms. In an ideal world all our rooms would have a sea view but unfortunately we do not have the space for this! I am sorry that you felt that you were kept waiting to checkout on the morning of your departure. It is quite unusual for one of our guests to leave so early in the morning. As you mention we are a small hotel and do not have reception staff available 24 hours a day. Had we known that you were on such a tight schedule then of course we would have made every effort to have your bill ready for you the previous evening. However I am delighted to read that you did manage to catch your planned ferry! Kind regards Fiona McLean General Manager
