Detailed Reviews
Il Bastione was just the place I'd been hoping for - a beautifully restored and well maintained building that was once a nobelman's hunting lodge set on a hillside in the midst of an olive grove. When you enter the dining area you are surrounded by artefacts and antiques - giving the feel of a living museum. The location is remote enough to be quiet and peaceful, but within a short hike to Spello, or an easy drive to Assisi, Perugia and other Umbrian destinations. The location sets the stage, but the star of the place is Jacopo who hosts with such enthusiasm, grace and a true love of what he does every day. The genuine smile that greets every guest makes you feel at home immediately, and of course you are offered a glass of wine as you are shown to your room! Jacopo and family also provide dinner and breakfast - and they are not to be missed! Every dinner is a showcase of products produced on the farm, and is a full 5 course event! Wine and digestives are included with the meal and the limoncello, or the chocolate liqueur were perfect endings to the meal. Breakfast included a selection of pastries, home made yogurt and eggs.
Other things to note: There is a lovely pool area, though we did not make use of it as it was a bit chilly in the evenings for swimming. It was still nice enough to make use of the lounge chairs and outdoor seating so we could watch the sunset.
The rooms that we stayed in were nicely furnished, and had doors to the outside so you could walk directly out to a terrace area.
The road to the agritourismo is narrow, but certainly manageable. The location is definitely part of the attraction of the place!
We hope to return on another trip and would recommend Il Bastione for an authentic experience, great food and warm hospitality. Thank you Jacopo for a wonderful stay!

Jacopo is a gem!
I mean, the whole agriturismo is a gem but Jacopo stands out. What an amazing cook and host. It's hard to believe how good his meals are. If he opened a restaurant in Boston, there would be a six-month wait. Breakfasts had perfect pastry, coffees, and fresh juices every morning. When we told him we loved the local bread (torta al testo), he told us how it was made and made sure extra portions showed up at each meal. As lovely as the restaurants in Spello are, we would have been more than happy to eat at the agriturismo every night.
The inn is great as well, an old hunting lodge with fantastic vaulted ceilings, rustic in appearance but pristinely kept, and filled with interesting knick-knacks (including a suit of armor??). The sitting room with its fireplace was a cozy refuge during our one rainy day in Umbria. The Wi-Fi was a little dodgy at times, and the bed was a little springy and stiff, but I ended up sleeping very well anyway. Must have been the wine.
I'm so glad we took this recommendation from a friend and stayed here rather than a rental in town. It's a quick drive into Spello, and you'll be happy for the views, the solitude, and Jacopo's hospitality.

What an amazing place!! We stayed 3 nights and wished it was longer.
We stayed in the stable rooms overlooking the pool and a fantastic view over Umbria and Spello. Dinner our first night was a feast and delicious, the second night we ate out and it was a mistake as nothing compares to the food, value and hospitality. We went back for our third night!
The owners are so accommodating and friendly. The breakfast included was plenty and delicious with all their farm produced cheese and hams it was simply wonderful and such great value
Umbria was a revelation and I would recommend anyone travelling to this area to stay here as the town of Spello is a beautiful medieval village tucked into the mountain with so much charm...as does the whole of Umbria!

This charming old farmhouse has the most spectacular views. My four night stay not as enjoyable as I anticipated. We stayed in the main house and I was disappointed in the bathroom. A standup shower so tiny that it was uncomfortable to use. Towels that weren't changed during our stay. The bed was very uncomfortable and the bed linens were below par. The rooms in the second building, a former horse stable, were renovated at some point, but the bathrooms had very old jacuzzi tubs. Breakfast and dinner was included with our room and was very nice. The food was delicious but there was way too much. Breakfast was at 8:30 am and dinner 8:30 pm. The five course dinner was served too late for our travelers as it wasn't over until 10 pm and we had early morning excursions. The staff was very nice but the rules were rigid- breakfast room opened at 8:30 am if you asked for coffee before then you were told no. The rooms in the former horse stable overlooked a pool and patio and the gorgeous views. If you are looking for a rustic stay this is the perfect place.

Response from Jacopo Cantarelli, Direttore generale at Agriturismo il Bastione
Responded 28 Oct 2023
Charming old farmhouse with spectacular views. Breakfast and dinner very nice. Food delicious and too much. Pool and patio with gorgeous view. Staff very nice. Position very good. It is all this very bad? The reason for a so low score is a standard shower 70x70, that we weren't available to serve coffee and breakfast at 7:00 am and that the dinner served at 20:30 was too late ( in one of the day of your stay your group cancelled the reservation for the dinner just little before it because the group was on tour and the bus arrived here too late. We are very flexible with our guests but we have to find a balance with the hour of work of our workers and the commitements of our farm. We clean the bedrooms every day and if requested we change towels every day ( at maximum at the third day of stay). We are sad that you didn't understand the value of our commitement, the value of our agriturismo, the value of the bedroom in a special place ( not renovated in some point but completely renovated) and the value of the farm ( the products at breakfast and dinner are our production). The tour operator you appointeed, before reserving a agriturismo for you, should check that your particular needs could be met. We don't know how much you paid the tour operator and what kind of expectations it offered to its travelers but it is easy offload the responsibilities of a choice onto those who work hard in a structure like ours. This will never happen again because we always want to have direct contact with our customers. We are also sad because you didn't say nothing to us, but you prefered wrote a review. We love our job and we love deeply il Bastione and we will work with great enthusiasm for making a great experience to our guests.

Lovely location and our room (stable room) was amazing. Extraordinary views, beautiful stonework, spacious size, refrigerator. While the large bathroom had a Jacuzzi tub, it did not have a free standing shower which would have been my preference. Breakfasts were delicious and the one dinner we had there was a 5 course delightful meal at an incredibly reasonable price. We did find the internet service to be somewhat erratic but no one else seemed to have a problem so maybe it was just us. Some reviewers state that they walked to Spello or Assisi. While surely not impossible, for me, that would have been very ambitious. Overall, Il Bastione is a most unique property.

We cannot recommend Agriturismo il Bastione highly enough! This was our favorite stay of the entire trip. The setting is gorgeous - nestled up in the hills with a sweeping view of the valley that does not come out in photos quite as it is in real life. There is lavender planted all throughout the property so it smells lovely too. If available, we highly recommend the dinner option - the food was absolutely amazing. The antipasto plate was spectacular with homemade torta al testo, meats, and different spreads. Definitely come hungry though - it’s a lot of food! Breakfast was also great with an option for fried or scrambled eggs and homemade yogurt and pastries. We were hiking town to town so did not have a car. Getting to Spello on foot was a 40min walk down a big hill and only one taxi driver in town so would recommend a rental car

Our expectations were high, and we were certainly not disappointed!
The photos don't do the views and atmosphere justices.
The family who runs it are very friendly and accommodating. They have succeeded well in combining the charm of the old bastillion with modern living requirements.
And the food - it is absolutely amazing! Well used local products, cooked with out fuzz, simple but not "simple", and very, very tasty. Definitely a chef who knows how to handle the ingredients to bring out the flavors. 5 course dinner with traditional, local food and for breakfast a wide range of choices - pastries, yoghurt, juices, coffee, ham, cheese, eggs...
It had everything we were looking for - local food, nice people, calm atmosphere, charming buildings and amazing surroundings.

This is an amazing property. I can't say enough...the setting, the people, the food...a real jewel.
We really enjoyed being able to walk to Spello through the beautiful olive groves and easily get a taxi back up the hill. We had a wonderful driver Diego who drove us everywhere we needed to go. Dinners were incredible with wonderful company each night. We will miss you all!!

This is a beautiful little farm just up the hill from the Medieval city of Spello. We went in mid-November, and were the only guests. Don't be afraid about the road reaching the place ; it was a little hairy the first time but we got used to it. Warm hosts. This was November and I'm guessing the rooms hadn't been used much in the last weeks, so there was a bit of a smell to them. Furnishings border on the spartan side and there was no shower in my bathroom (jetted up with shower hose). Breakfasts were generous, with homemade yogurt, honey and cheese. Eggs offered along with a couple pastries. Spello was central to all of the other places we visited; in summer there is apparently a path to Assissi you can talk if you're a sturdy type. Great value and the view alone is worth a stay here.

This was our fourth trip to Italy and il Bastione one of our most memorable experiences.
The food. The accommodation. The view. The pool. The hospitality. The location. Did I mention the food.
You can explore Umbria or relax around the pool and enjoy the view.
Jacopo is a great host who made us feel welcome. His meals were amazing ( Breakfast and the 5 course dinners )
We recommend il Bastione and will stay there again.
A truly memorable experience and a highlight of our month in Italy!

Yes, of course. Please inform us before the dinner for vegetiarian menù or for other requests.
The dinners are amazing. They charge 25.00 Euros per person for 4 course meals with wine, water and coffee/tea. We ate there every night. You will not be disappointed.
You will not eat better at any other restaurant in Spello for that price. Jacobo and Nonna cook all their food from scratch from their own farm. Questions about time
No. None of them do. However this place and location has amazing views. You will not be sorry.
Yes, every bed room has a private bath with hairdryer, towels, soap and shampoo.
