La Bastiglia restaurant hotel in Spello is mentioned among the most important gastronomic and hotel guides (one star in the Michelin Guide). It is located at the foot of Subasio Mountain, the enchanted mount of San Francis. Here love and wisdom have transformed, like magic, an ancient mill into the Hotel Restaurant la Bastiglia, an unforgettable place, were customers are welcomed as friends, and may find modern comforts and ancient atmospheres. There are 33 rooms divided into three categories, looking at the Umbrian landscape, characterized by the cypress tree green-black colour and the olive trees green-grey colour. The restaurant, expresses the typical Umbrian dishes with ancient recipes and modern creations using highly selected foods; this is the meeting-place of international customers. Inside la Bastiglia hotel restaurant there are some important collection of ceramics, antique furniture and important paintings from the private collection of Schifano and Norberto.

We have just spent a wonderful ten days at La Bastiglia and we’re looked after so kindly by the great team of young workers - Arianna, Chiara, Eri, Daniel, Mattia and one other whose name I lost - for whom nothing was too much trouble. Every morning and evening we were welcomed by their smiling faces and they helped to make our stay very special. We hope to return in the future.

The hotel have 4 shining stars and the restaurant gave you a most original Italian taste of Umbrian cuisine. I say hallo to the owner Luca and my friend doctor Stefanescu wishing you all the best !

Spello is a superb base for travelers in Umbria and La Bastiglia is one of the better choices in the town, the other being Palazzo Bocci. La Bastiglia, however, offers rooms about 30% less than the Palazzo, which may well make the difference. The hotel is located at the back end of Spello and parking is usually, but not always, readily available. The lobby and common areas are attractive. The pool, which is allegedly heated, was cold when we were there and did not appear to get much use. The guest rooms are adequately spacious, but not particularly luxurious. The balconies of the superior doubles are shared, with hedges providing limited privacy. Breakfast is served outside looking a magnificent hillside. The breakfast itself was skimpy, surprising in view of the fact that the hotel's restaurant holds one star from Michelin. The staff was friendly enough and we're comfortable suggesting that others stay here, but it's less than outstanding.

Arrival at the hotel reception we were met by a rude lady that after asking for our passports, stated we could pick up them up three hours later. Said she needed to put in our information. Returned three hours later, it was still not ready. Paid extra for an updated/deluxe room with terrace. We received a tired old room that was not clean and a shared terrace with three other rooms. Weather was warm and air-conditioning was turned off. Went to the front desk and she refused to turn it on, said she was cold. She then said we could just open up the patio doors. Well, couldn't do that without hearing other guests on the shared patio or smelling smoke from their cigarettes. There was also a smoke stack from the kitchen on our patio which we smelled constantly. Not to mention it was not safe to have doors open with other guests having access. What a bad experience, avoid this hotel!!!

Stayed at this hotel as part of the first and last night of a cycling holiday. Coincidentally we had the same room each time. On the first visit half of the shower door was missing, meaning water went everywhere when showering. We didn't say anything as we were only staying for the one night. On our return a week later we were allocated the same room to find that the shower door was still not replaced. On reporting it to reception, the lady told us that this had just broken and been removed yesterday and not to worry! We knew this wasn't true but put up with it, feeling disappointed. We also asked the same lady how much approximately for a taxi to the station? Her reply was a straight- "I don't know!" Not a very helpful response. Otherwise, view from our room was beautiful, the food was lovely, and other staff were very nice.

Have stayed here in the past but would no longer recommend it. The staff and the restaurant has all changed & it is a shadow of its former past. No help with bags up & down the 42 steps to our bedroom even when the porter looked at us struggling. Dark rooms &, when we complained of fleas in the rooms, we're told to expect this as we were in the country. We moved out but the staff we're not interested in our reasons. Unfortunately we can not recommend this hotel.

This hotel is located high on a hill overlooking gorgeous vistas. There are rooms in the hotel that enjoy this view and others that don't at all. The furnishings are tired, but the beds are clean and comfortable. From hearing from other hotel guests, many showers leaked various amount. Our stay was "fine". We did not have a room with any view. Would I go back to this hotel? ONLY if I could be guaranteed one of the 4 star rooms. Other than that, I would give it a pass.

This is a hotel that has seen better days. Our room had black mold in the shower and termites were eating away at the bathroom door. When we informed the front desk, we were told that "they come in from the outside." The "spa" wasn't working. This hotel has the bones to be great, but clearly the staff and the owners don't really care. If you can find another place to stay, I would do that.

Hotel rooms comfortable, staff very friendly and informative, and food/wine fantastic. Great place from which to explore Umbria - and a must is the Aqueduct walk and the start is about 5 mins away from the hotel.

Just got back from 2 weeks in italy. stayed at la bastiglia along the way for 2 nights. place is nicely located and maintained. incredible views of the valleys of spello. Support staff were extremely nice and helpful. We really only encountered 2 issues. 1. if you don't like the smell of febreeze, beware, it appears to be there cleaning solution of choice. I'm not sure if they use such heavy doses due to the hotels smoking and animal policies, but it took us a while to get the room aired out.
2. The head waiter at the restaurant (i believe his name is stephan) could use some work with etiquette. We ate at the restaurant both evenings we were in spello and had the same result. Stephan will reluctantly take your order, and he's done with you. PERIOD!!! you wont be asked if your meal was ok. you wont be asked if you would like some more wine or water. you wont be asked if you would like some dessert. I think he coins you as someone from outside his country who doesn't speak the language and your simply not worthy of his time. Its really a shame because the best thing about this hotel is the view from the outdoor dining area.

Food was very good, and the supporting dining staff (other than the head waiter) could not have been nicer. Room was clean and orderly and had a shared balcony with a view.

i would recommend a stay at this hotel.....just as a side note: we made a few friends along the way that stayed at this hotel and did not eat there. they had a similar dining encounter as we did at a couple of other local establishments just down the road from la bastiglia. Not sure if its just this particular area, but we were not treated that way in any of our other Italy travels.

Definitely not a deal breaker. nice , clean, friendly , affordable local establishment. i would stay there again with little hesitation.
