Detailed Reviews

Six of us stayed at Roberts' Camp for a night and it was perfect for our needs. As students on a budget, we thought the dome tents were a great deal as they come with mattresses, pillows, and blankets; the staff was very accommodating to our needs. Hearing the hippos around our tents at night was pretty exhilarating! The facilities are basic but completely sufficient, and we loved looking out over the lake as we ate breakfast. We took a 2-hour boat ride around the lake (well worth it!) and saw hippos, crocs, fishing eagles, herons, and many other kinds of beautiful birds. Would happily stay here again if we returned to the area.

We went to Roberts Camp for a nice relaxing Easter weekend. Generally I found the site quite disappointing. The area allocated for camping has some derelict buildings nearby (I assume they were destroyed by the flooding)and you cant see the lake. More and more people kept arriving and it felt like all the tents were squeezed in next to each other. Including a large group of teenagers who partied loudly into the night, and the staff did pretty much nothing about it (only intervened after I complained twice). The lake shore is shabby. Waited over an hour for dinner and the food that came was sub-standard. We were supposed to stay 3 nights but after that experience left early the next morning. Would nit return or recommend.

Response from Roberts C, Manager at Roberts' Camp
Responded 13 Jul 2016
It is regrettable to read an adverse review. For the record, the lady who wrote it was warned about the noisy crowd, and shown a quieter place to set up her tent. But she declined to move. The management did in fact take steps to keep the noise down, and approached the group several times. In the morning the lady was again offered a different location, and was told that the group had been cautioned, but her response was that she was leaving. As to the derelict buildings, yes the Lake Baringo Lodge next door has been abandoned since the 2013 floods and does look desolate. We are growing a hedge between our properties to hide this, and are tidying up the camp grounds as the lake recedes. We also continue to build new and upgraded facilities to accommodate and welcome our many guests.

Although the lakes level had been risen for 7 meters in the last year, there is still enough space left to have an enjoyable stay at this atmospheric place. The service had been kind and friendly. It is astonishing that one can feel comfortable with crocodiles and hippos nearby... Don't have too much expectations in water flushed toilets or warm showers.

Dear Temponaut, We appreciate your review, and we are glad you had a nice stay here at Roberts Camp. In the Banda that you stayed in we have an eco-friendly saw-dust toilet and cold showers, that is true, but we do have other accomodation with flushing toilet and hot shower. If you decide to come back, book ahead, and I'm sure you will be even more comfortable. You are more than welcome back on another occasion! Kind Regards, Malin

Despite the flooding, our large group had a fantastic and accommodating 2 night stay in the Robert's supplied tents. The staff were very helpful during our booking, particularly as they had another large booking clash, and were excellent and informative with the communication of their tent availability. The facilities are excellent, and well maintained. The staff are incredibly helpful and the activities on offer are superb. And nothing can rate higher than the water views from the bar and the sound of the hippo's through the night. Our only regret was we didn't stay longer!

Dear Clinton, Thank you for your good review on Roberts Camp. I'm sorry if you experienced some inconvenience with the booking clash, but I'm glad our staff sorted it out. Don't regret not staying longer, cause you are always welcome back. We have more accommodation now to, since the water has receded quite a lot since you were here last, but don't worry, the wildlife is still just as close. Kind regards, Malin Oersal

I was really looking forward to staying here...especially as it located at Lake Baringo where the Fish Eagles hunt - perfect for Photographers!
As I arrived the camp was flooded and looked shaby to say the least. I was staying in one of the Banda's - Stork....which is now literally feet from the Lakes edge and did not feel safe or as picturesque as I had imagined. I am disappointed that their official website makes no mention of the flooding or the current state here. It is misleading to me. The staff were not very friendly and seemed down when i was there. I stayed for 1 night only and am glad it was no longer. The food was dreadful, the staff rude and the camp was horrible. As we left the following day they made a comment to my Driver that I did not tip anybody! Simply ask my driver or other camps I have stayed at about tipping...I tip more than most and tip almost anyone at a lodge of the service is good. Sadly for me, there were no reasons to tip at Roberts Camp. I will never stay here again - as my title says, it is Miserable :(

We stayed here in November. (i know i should keep up) The camp was flooded but they had moved the tents to a different location on the waters edge. The camp next door was so flooded the water level was half way up the walls.
Here at Roberts camp we only saw 2 bands that were unusable.
The food was good value and quality, the beer was good and cheap lol always a winner for me.
The bird life was very good (helped by the staff putting out food)
This was a great place for us to base ourselves while we did lake bogoia to see the flamingos.
I would happily go bag to Roberts camp.

We had a very disappointing experience camping at Roberts' Camp. When we had gone before, we loved the lakeshore and wildlife. The last time we came, we couldnt sleep at all as wave after wave of college students arrived, even at 2am, for weekend parties.
The camp management was completely unable or unwilling to deal with the screaming noise. It seems that the camp is interested in the revenues generated by such large numbers of guests to the detriment of other guests.
We could tolerate it for a night then moved to one of the tented camps in the area, but I would never recommend this for people coming for a wildlife experience or with children. One could have a fine experience, but its just too unpredictable. Considering our previous great experiences, Roberts' Camp has become very disappointing.

This is a run down horrible place to stay. If you are camping it might be okay. But we rented a banda. What a surprise to find a cockroach under the pillow. Later in the evening there were several others. But no surprise as the room was not very clean. We were surprised that for this price you share the toilet with the camping. These toilets are horrible long drop style that smell very bad. At night it reminded me of the scene from Indiana Jones, bugs crawling out, no way was I sitting on that thing. There is also no hot water in the showers. The food was actually okay, except on Sunday afternoon when we wanted to order some sandwiches off the menu to take with us on the road we were told that there is no bread made on Sundays.
I was shocked. The guide books and reviews rate this place very well. But it was horrible. Maybe it is assumed that it is good because the owners are White. But they really seen to be absent. Or maybe people are just blinded by the natural beauty of the site. Don't waist your money stay at one of the other hotels.

Spent 2 nights here at the beginning of October. The water lever was rather high, only a couple of meters from the tents and the hippos came out to graze in the middle of the night. The experience was amazing! Seeing these huge animals just meters away from your tent was breathtaking! Our tent came with twin beds, towels were provided, but no mosquito nets, so be carefull not to leave the tent open and lights on :) The restaurant serves good food (loved the pancakes and loved chicken curry!) but the toilets could get more attention during the day...

We had stayed in the wonderful Herons House in December 2010 and booked it again with our friends. When we arrived in the rain at 9 at night this August we were told the whole place was flooded and Herons House is almost completely submerged. In fact hippos are now living on the terrace. We were not at all prepared for staying in tents and using the toilet blocks, especially since we arrived late at night, in the rain, and had been expecting a lovely dry cottage. Roberts Camp is not the wonderful place it was last December. Much of it is underwater and you can't walk around the edge of the lake anymore. The edges of the lake are no longer pretty as they are full of debris and stagnant water. We were very disappointed that we hadn't been allocated another cottage or at least 2 bandas to replace Herons House. We felt very badly treated. The flood happened in April and we could easily have been given alternative similar accomodation. The only advantage of the water is that the hippos are coming further into the camp to eat, but ths makes it even more dangerous to leave the tents at night to go to the loo. When we arrived there were two hippos right next to the tent we were offered. Roberts camp is still a special place, but it feels as if it is in a bit of a shambles right now. We moved next door to the poor Lake Baringo Club hotel. If you have a booking at Roberts Camp, check where they are putting you. The tents are basic, not luxury.

Dear Uirapurur,
I t depends with the type of transport you are intending to use.
Public transport as a means: Get a bus or a matatu from Nairobi to Nakuru, connect another matatu to Marigat and finally Marigat to Lake Baringo.
Otherwise, while in Nairobi find Mololine matatu which operates Nairobi to Marigat then Marigat to Lake Baringo.
You can as well have a privately hired taxi from Nairobi to Lake Baringo. They normally charge KES 15000 to KES 14000.
Thanks
James
