Detailed Reviews
I stayed at the heron house for 4 nights with my parents, wife and four year old son. We chose the self-catering option but took some meals and drinks at the very nice bar/ restaurant.
We had an excellent stay. The heron house is a very large house right on the shore of lake baringo. We had crocodiles and hippo's literally within touching distance from the veranda.
The layout is ideal for two groups, because you need to go through rooms to get to the two en-suite bathrooms. In total there are 5 bedrooms for the two bedrooms.
We went on a boat trip (organized by roberts camp) and went for lunch at the island camp. We also had a nature walk to the viewpoint, the view and climb was good, but not much else to see up there.
The bar/ restaurant is a very nice place to relax and meet people. Staff are excellent, provide good service and advice.

This is a great place to relax. The cottages are very nice with fantastic views of the lake. In the night the hippo's walk on the grounds to graze and in the morning you wake up open the doors to the veranda to enjoy the tranquility and the amazing variety of birds. They are every where and when you sit and enjoy the view over the lake, the flowers, trees and fisher men on the lake and you drink your tea or coffee and wonder can I come any closer to the Garden of Eden?

Roberts' Camp was great. We stayed in banda, which was good, although next time we might opt for a tent, which is cheaper and right on the lake, but still with nice beds inside. The cottages looked great as well if you have a group especially. The bathrooms are not connected to the bandas, so you have to walk outside, which you cannot do at night due to the vicious hippos who roam around the grounds after dark. Our bathroom/outhouse was only used by us so was quite full of ants and spiders, but that's all part of the experience.
The staff was extremely friendly and especially helpful in arranging activities during the day for us. The food was very decent, especially the breakfast.
A very peaceful escape at a good value. Recommended.

We stayed at Hammerkops cottage and enjoyed it during the day. At night however, it was a different story – the bed nets had holes that let in dozens of mosquitoes. The night lighting was very dim, perhaps to keep the insects away. Also, the caretaker told us to close the windows and it got claustrophobic and really hot in there. The kitchen needed thorough cleaning but was manageable for the stay. No hand towels were provided – only bath towels.
They feed the hippos in the afternoon and we could watch them munching away right under our balcony. The walkway is not a place for toddlers as there are no barriers to stop a fall from energetic little ones.
The Thirsty Goat restaurant is small but serves good food and the staff are friendly and helpful.

Please be aware you will be using a shower with only cold water (only cold water is connected) and the shower is outside, the toilet as well is outside. The toilet is a sawdust toilet next to a hippo/ crocodile infested swamp. So be sure to carry a flashlight(not provided)if you want to take a piss in the night.
And half of the place is literally under water. If you planning to eat over there only few items are availble that are advitised on the menu.
Go at your own risk.

Response from Roberts C, Manager at Roberts' Camp

Dear David, Thank you for your personal feeling about Roberts Camp. As a matter of fact you personally never booked the accommodation, but this is not the issue as we had advised your tour agent in advace of the different options of availabilities and chose Coots banda as their best budget accommodation. They (your tour agent) have never called to complain owing to the fact that all informations regarding our accommodations are with them. We are in a conservation place at the lake shore with a well posted warning signs of the animals presence.Different guests have different feeling about the animals so one has to respect nature . Yes more than half of the place is under water, as a management we can not prevent nature from taking it's course. Actually we have tried to keep the place going since Roberts Camp has been a destination for both local and foreign tourists for decades now and we can not let it go without foghting to keep it alive. Otherwise, we have coots cottage with hot and cold shower. Baringo is also generally warm all year round. Sorry for this and we promise to deliver the best next time . Regards James

We stayed in the Croot Cottages for 2 nights. The accommodation per se was ok (a bit run down but ok). The food in the thirsty goat however was of low quality and very expensive for this location.
One thing also - which they only inform you on check-out: If you pay by Card you pay a surcharge of 5 %.
Would have given 2* but due to the surcharge I had to deducted one *.

+1
We stayed at Coots Cottage in Roberts Camp in December 2018 and loved it. As the water levels in the lake have risen we were even closer to the water than I had imagined. I hope the water levels don’t continue to rise or the wonderful Roberts Camp could be list forever. In all the lakes in the Northern Rift Valley the rising water levels have already claimed numerous homes and hotels.
Coots cottage was perfect for us. It was spacious with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms a fully equipped kitchen and a magnificent verandah with spectacular views of the lake. I just wish I had had more time to sit and enjoy the views but sadly we only stayed for one night. All of the rooms were clean and well furnished. Our bed was large and comfortable. The bathrooms were clean and newly decorated. The showers worked well and there was plenty of hot water.
We organised a boat trip on the lake and an early morning guided walk both through Roberts Camp and both were excellent value for money.
We enjoyed a sundowner at the Thirsty Goat and had dinner there too. The menu was small but catered for both vegetarians and meat eaters! It was a delightful spot to spend the evening.
We didn’t see the hippos when we returned to the cottage but the next morning could see their footprints very close to the cottage garden.
We saw a range of wildlife whilst sitting on the verandah including lizards, birds and monkeys.
I would definitely stay at Coots cottage at Roberts Camp again only for more than one night next time. It was a delightful spot.

The rising water levels enhance the beauty of this place. The water is close to the bar and restaurant. I like the ambience of the place. The menu is western style but we ordered goat curry. Not bad at all but way too expensive at 800ks. Such a meal is normally 500ks max. Anyway I wish the place all the best and will duck in again when next in Baringo.

Dear Simongoveyausuk, Thank you for the generous feedback of your experience. We promise to better Roberts Campsite irrespective of the natural challenges we face. The meals price I would say is affordable. We have to take care of our suppliers who are faced with ever increasing prices of market products.Otherwise we have considered all the involved players to have the end product a quality worth the cost. I spent 2 nights in a small Safari tent for 2 person. While it was quite small for two beds ansd the price is quite high, I think it was worth it. The proximity to Lake Baringo is a huge plus!!! You will hear hippos at night and may even see them grazing around your tent. During the day you can watch them in the water and may be even see some crocodiles while enjoying a cold tusker next to the water. The Restaurant is not Special, but good. But the whole atmosphere is the best part. You can charge your electronic devices at the bar and can make a fire next to your tent

Thank you for getting back to us with a true and genuine experience about Roberts Camp Lake Baringo. We are trying much to keep the "The thirsty goat Bar and restaurant " to the standard irrespective of the ever rising level of the lake water. We appreciate and welcome more views from our guests. Dear Uirapurur,
I t depends with the type of transport you are intending to use.
Public transport as a means: Get a bus or a matatu from Nairobi to Nakuru, connect another matatu to Marigat and finally Marigat to Lake Baringo.
Otherwise, while in Nairobi find Mololine matatu which operates Nairobi to Marigat then Marigat to Lake Baringo.
You can as well have a privately hired taxi from Nairobi to Lake Baringo. They normally charge KES 15000 to KES 14000.
Thanks
James
