We stayed for 5 nights in April with the primary aim of looking for the Iberian Lynx as well as the area’s other animals and birds. The place was easy to find using the directions provided and Roland gave us a warm welcome. We chose to have breakfast and evening meals at the Villa. They were very flexible with breakfast times and all of the food was very good, always with fresh ingredients from the garden, including honey from their own bees. We also had packed lunches made every day which was great for us as we were out all of the time and there weren’t any local shops that we could see. The accommodation was very clean and comfortable, with constant hot water. Not luxurious, but perfectly fine and most importantly very quiet. Roland and Mercedes were excellent hosts and were extremely knowledgeable about the area and its wildlife. We spent 3 days with Iberian Lynx Land and saw some amazing wildlife, including sightings of 3 beautiful Lynxes. The area is a real biodiversity hotspot which is great to see still exists in Europe. I would definitely recommend Villa Matilde as a lovely base when visiting the area.

We stayed here for 2 nights with our dogs in mid November, my husband went for a wildlife tour with Mercedes and I stayed at Villa Matilde with our 2 small dogs, my husband had a very good day as did I. I walked our dogs through the property grounds with the help of the 3 resident dogs, 2 of which were big and friendly . The food was delicious and plentiful and we were able to purchase wine with our dinner which was also good. There was no rush to breakfast and we were able to leave late morning after another good walk with the dogs. The place is very peaceful and engenders relaxation, Roland and Mercedes are there if you need them but give enough space leaving you time to wind down. We have booked to return for a slightly longer stay.

A great 8 day stay with Ville Matilde providing a base for wildlife viewing in the local area - a great spot for a wide range of wildlife including the Iberian lynx, birds, wild flowers.... Ville Matilde has welcoming hosts who have a wealth of wildlife knowledge and will help wherever possible. Clean comfortable room with en suite and tasty, healthy evening meals were served using local produce. Lovely outside pool and peaceful retreat if wanting to get away from it all and relax. Easy car parking. A great stay and will definitely return!

Set in the Sierra Morena, a hotspot for the rare Lynx, this location is ideal for many types of wildlife, the accommodation is ideal for both long and short stays with on-suites and clean tidy rooms. The swimming pool is well maintained The owners are well experienced in the wildlife in the area and are only too willing to give helpful advice. Meals are optional but recommended, all home cooking with fresh ingredients Definitely worth a stay, I have now stayed four times and will be planning another trip later in the year.

My wife and I stayed at Villa Matilde for 7 nights at the beginning of March 2017 and I would recommend it to anyone planning to visit the area. For us it was an excellent and very reasonably priced base from which to look for wildlife, particularly the rare Iberian lynx, as well as for sight-seeing. Our hosts, Roland (Dutch) and Mercedes (Spanish), made us very welcome and are a mine of useful information and advice – they both speak excellent English. They are clearly used to catering for various dietary requirements and Roland, who was on chef duty throughout our stay, produced hot, tasty, nourishing meals for two pescatarians, one of whom cannot eat wheat, without once repeating the menu. Coming back tired, cold and hungry after 12 hours up a mountain looking for lynx, a crackling log fire and a piping bowl of delicious, home-made soup was exactly what we needed - and the wine was excellent too. Breakfast included a variety of home-made jams and even a fresh egg from the villa’s own chickens. Our room, la Encina, in the basement, was simply furnished but the beds were warm and comfortable, which was all we needed. There is a shower room with basin and toilet across the corridor. We walked in the villa’s own unspoilt woods on the first evening and saw signs of deer, wild boar and badgers and at night we could hear frogs and owls. Local fauna is completed by the villa’s 3 friendly dogs and half-a-dozen beautiful cats who gambol around the place – but don’t worry if you are allergic, they never come inside. A word about Mercedes’ guiding skills; we booked her to show us round for the first two days and she proved not only an excellent guide but very good company. Not only did she introduce us to all the best lynx-watching spots, but showed us some less well known areas, a great many plants and birds, and even an eagle owl – a bird we would never have found by ourselves. Finally, our fellow guests were all friendly and interesting too, so if you are going to Sierra de Andujar to watch birds or animals rather than kill them, or if you just want to enjoy the scenery, you are probably more likely to find like-minded guests at Villa Matilde than anywhere else in the area.

My partner and I stayed here for three nights in search of an Iberian Lynx. Villa Matilde is an ideal base and Mercedes was very helpful in providing the best advice in how to go about this. The villa is cosy and warm, the log fire was lovely after a couple of days of searching in the rain! The room was clean and comfortable, best nights sleep I've had in a while (although this may be the fresh air and wine!) Roland's food was incredible and I couldn't get over the value for money given the quality. 15.90 for three courses with bread and water. You can't go wrong! Discussing the events of the day over good food, wine and with fab company was one of my highlights of my trip. The area is stunning, I've never experienced scenery like it. Word of warning, I would recommend hiring a 4x4 style vehicle as the roads are full of pot holes which make driving in any other vehicle quite difficult. We will definitely be back!

Not modern, in fact slightly 'tired' family run establishment, with breakfast, packed lunch and evening meal facilities. I went with a vegetarian who was delighted that he didn't have to have egg and chips in some form or other every evening. In fact that was one of the down points - although the food was very good, a couple of evenings the evening meal was exclusively vegetarian. Although this didn't bother me too much, I felt there should always be a 'meat' option. The people running it (Rolland and Mercedes) were very friendly, helpful and informative. Apparently most rooms have 'en-suites', although ours had the shower and toilet for our exclusive use, along a corridor. As long as you take into consideration the comment about the evening meals above, highly to be recommended.

I came here with my father in January 2016, in search of the iberian lynx. Looking for the lynx on the heights of the Sierra Morena is a thrilling experience but boy we were also quite happy to come-back to villa Matilde after a long day out (and an almost impossible road over there). The place is exactly what you need to rest comfortably and eat with all other guests and talk about your experiences. The warmth of the owner was quite appreciable too! I cannot recommend it more as it is very affordable and the closest to the lynx activities.
