Good little hotel, decent location, suitable accommodations. If you stay here and don’t rent a bike from them, I can see nothing untoward happening.

But I rented a bike, for which it’s usual procedure to leave your passport as surety. I was wiped out by another motorist who failed to signal and, while this sort of thing is common fare on Ko Samui, the way it was handled in my case was far from legal. In retrospect, I shudder at my naivety, but don’t worry: I paid.

In the hospital, I emailed the US Embassy who got ahold of the police, from which parties I was informed that the accident had been amicably resolved (without my participation, as I was hemorrhaging from a ruptured kidney into a catheter at the time). The hotel had made no effort whatsoever to contact me during this time. I was further informed that I was not liable for damages to the bike or other motorist’s car, as he had failed to signal.

The hotel was kind enough to send my things to me (hefty charge on that, naturally, but everything was present and intact, to their credit).

The bike rental people sent a stooge to extort 40,000 THB (roughly $1270) for damages to the bike. It was scratched and a bit dented. I told him I’d contacted the embassy and police who’d told me I was in the clear. To this, he sadly informed me that it was his duty to collect the monies outstanding, or else I would not receive my passport. I told him withholding a citizen’s passport is a crime, etc etc, and he just shook his head and suggested that “Maybe we can resolve this later.” All the while, my passport was being held in a satchel by a very quiet “friend from insurance” who stood by him during our, um... negotiations.

I repeatedly told him of my communication with the police, whom he refused to call to confirm for me (he was lucky my phone was broken in the wreck, and managed almost always to be away when the nurses were present, often with me wondering whether he’d return or not).

Being catheterized and immobile from six fractured ribs, I finally handed over the money, in exchange for my passport, imagining a worst case scenario of it being pawned on the black market, which it turns out is a fairly common occurrence. If this sounds stupid, it’s cuz you weren’t there. I had no phone, the nurses ignored me (government hospital), and Captain Payment had a knack for avoiding them or dismissing them with what I can only assume were polite assurances in Thai, when they did suspect something.

It took me a while to come around to the fact that I’d been scammed, and this only because a Thai patient with good English took pity on me and explained what had been going on.

Obviously, lesson learned. Biking in Ko Samui is dangerous. Leaving your passport as surety is foolhardy. I was dumb and I paid for it.

Don’t make the same mistake. The hotel is great, the staff helpful. But Don’t. Rent. The bikes. I don’t know what variety of mobsters they’re in cahoots with here, and I’m not so naive as to assume they’re the only ones on the island in said cahoots, but seriously, if you rent a bike don’t leave your passport. This hotel handed my international documentation to felons who extorted me in the amount of $1270 USD while I was immobilized by fractured ribs and a ruptured spleen and left kidney, and while it is a spiffy little hotel, their business associations need some serious re-evaluation.

I booked 3 rooms at this hotel which is a little confusing as it seems to have 2 names? At Samui Boutique Hotel and Behind the Scenes Hotel. Please do not get fooled as this is the same hotel yet they charge different prices for the same room. I arrived a day earlier than my friends and immediately I could tell the Air Con was not working properly. I spoke to 2 different people and they said they would have a look at it. That is exactly what they did. Stood and looked at it. The staff were friendly but lacked the ability to resolve problems. I asked If I could move as it was to warm in my room they said the hotel was full. We asked about fridges and they said they would arrange them. After 3 days myself and another friend gave up. Upon arrival they said to one of my friends would you like an upgrade to a bigger room. Stupidly he said yes and paid another 1500 baht and he was put in a room no much bigger than mine and they found a fridge for him immediately?? Turns out as the hotel was full!! This was his room anyway and basically paid 1500 baht to have a fridge. So if you are offered something upon arrival ask to see both options before paying! The rooms are adequate but the lighting is terrible! Why is there no light above the mirror? Impossible to see and do anything it was like being in a cave. Couldn't shave properly and my girlfriend struggled to see, to do her make up. The doors also need a good seeing to! Put dampeners on them so they do not slam. I have never known a hotel to be so noisy with doors constantly slamming like a lorry just hit the building. Most ridiculous thing was the cleaning lady! She was in and out of rooms like a yoyo taking great pleasure of waking everyone by slamming the doors. As said staff were friendly, adequate, good location but annoying they have not agreed proper access to the beach via AL'S resort as after 4 days, we was refused access and had to walk far for the rest of the holiday.
Sort out doors, lighting and air con! Especially when paying customers ask!

There are better hotels for the same price, newer, cleaner in that same location

Positive:
Location is great.

Negative:
Balcony door did not lock, shower is horrible, not like the pictures, it floods and smells of sewage.
Watch out when walking around the top floor, my partner hit her head so hard she shaved skin of that needed to be treated.

Pros
- We booked this hotel due to it's location. The hotel is just a street opposite the beach and had many restaurants beside it.
- The room ambience is cozy and very clean.
- Staffs are very friendly and attentive. However, they forgotten to book our taxi last minute which ended us to pay more as we get the service from the street.

Cons
- Basic ammenities, only shower gel and shampoo. No refrigerator (so no take away cool beer) or free coffee and tea in the room. However, the staffs are willing to help out with your requests anytime.
- Very, very noisy. This place is also a centre attraction for party goers. Therefore, the noise will be getting louder throughout the night. It is definitely a NO stay for those who want a good night sleep. And you can clearly hear your neighbours loud conversation.

First time in Koh Samui, staying in this hotel have been great. Clean, spacious room, good price for the stay and friendly staff that goes beyond to help you out. Special mention to Sulart, one of the staff who helped us during our stay- making sure we are well informed of the place and helped booked necessary bookings that we needed. Highly recommended!

Second time I have stayed here and again it did not disappoint.
The staff are so friendly and helpful. Prices are very reasonable considering its proximity to Chaweng beach.
The first time I stayed with my boyfriend and most recently with my friend, this hotel is perfect for couples or friends alike.
Cannot fault either stay.
Fab aircon and TV.
