Pleasant old building loaded with history and sloping floors! We had a sea view room which was lovely - but was very hot with sun blazing in all day. Normally I wouldn't complain about that but it did make it hard to sleep with no fan or AC in the room. beds were fine, facilities were as you would expect with a backpackers. Nice cool tea outside to enjoy the cool breeze.

Needing somewhere to stay outside of Wellington, as we had a long drive north the next day, it suited our purpose. Comfortable but not super clean, dust mainly around carpet edges and sand around door and window frames. Great location though, right across the road from the beach.

I arrived at this place late at night after having nowhere else to go. The owner was very sweet and welcoming. She helped me carry my bags to my private room. It is a shared bathroom and kitchen, which was kept nice and tidy. The owner also helped me by recommending things to do in the area and where to get food. This was my first experience in a hostel and I felt very safe and comfortable. I would definitely stay here again. You can't beat that it's also across the street from the beach!

What a cracking old building steeped in history. Izzy and I were heading up to Rotorua having just landed from the Interislander and had pre-booked Barnacles through travelbug as a stopover. I would love to have had the leisure to tarry over the numerous old photographs and history of this lovely old building, two nights would have been good. Our room had a double bed and sink with clean linen sheets. Shared shower and toilet facilities were utilitarian and clean. Kitchen was not the best equipped but was adequate. TV rooms and lounges were marvelous, like staying at a treasured Aunt's house who lives with the paraphernalia of a bygone age,

First of all we booked this place via Hotels.com. They gave it a 2.5 star rating which was very generous. We missed the small print during the booking process that mentioned there are no private toilets or bathrooms, everything is shared and down the hall. Even the photos on Hotels.com made the place look historical quaint and slightly up market, boy were we wrong. The building was built in 1923 and that was probably the last time it received any maintenance. Check In went ok and we got the directions to the room and tv rooms, kitchen etc. It was only when she told us the showers and toilets were down the hall did we realise it was a hostel. With that said we approached the concept with a broad mind and went to our room. The room was just so dated and the carpet was dirty, curtains pulled off the rails and furniture that looked like it was ready for the scrap heap. The wardrobe foot was broken and held level by another piece of wood, maybe the broken foot. The window was all glued and nailed up and you could not securely lock it, you also could not open it fully to get out to the fire escape. The bed was very uncomfortable and the room had a cold damn feel. While they provide towels for the showers you have to ask for them at reception and even then they looked about 50 years also, worn out and very small. The walls were thin and you could hear other people in their rooms even though they were talking quietly. Luckily we were out for the entire next day so basically just slept here. It is most definitely a low end back packers or 1960s style gentlemens hostel but in such bad condition and so poorly maintained I would not recommend this place to anyone. The thought of a overseas backpacker staying here and forming an opinion about NZ based on this place worries me, so my advice is DO NOT STAY HERE.…

Would NOT recommend this accommodation The showers were communal and no privacy No locks The place was dirty and the badly planned kitchen area needed a lot of attention to bring it up to a reasonable standard One night was one too many
