My wife and I were booked into a standard double room for 2 nights B/B to attend a funeral in January 2020. The room was comfortable, warm, during our stay and had all of the amenities you could wish for. We dined at the hotel on both days in a clean comfortable restaurant situated in a large conservatory overlooking the river Waveney. The menu choice was good and well supplemented by specials on a blackboard. The food was very tasty with generous portions, served by polite, efficient staff. Parking was not a problem in the large car park. The car park entrance was very steep and the only advice I would give is that elderly or disabled people would probably need a very short taxi ride to get into town.
Whilst there we looked at the two suites overlooking the river and conservatory and they both were very spacious and well furnished (a touch of luxury in fact).
We experienced the hotel during a very quiet period in January when there was no activity on the river. I could imagine that the hotel could be very busy during the height of the tourist season.
All in all, a good hotel, good food, polite and helpful staff, good location convenient for exploring the town with its interesting range of shops and we would certaintly return if we planed a short break in Beccles.

Our first wedding was cancelled due to the first lock down and hotels re-opened on the Monday before our Saturday wedding. Our first wedding contact at the hotel left shortly after we committed to using the venue and her position was taken briefly by Lisa and then by Kim.

Great courtesy and understanding was extended to us with various changes the arose due to Covid by both Lisa and Kim.

Our wedding was a modest affair within the maximum of 30 due to Covid restriction with more than half the guest travelling over three hours to reach the venue and requiring accommodation too. All guests were pleasantly surprised by their rooms and found the hotel to be in a beautiful location and full of character.

The riverside room we hired for the Wedding breakfast was quoted as being £500 from the start (before covid) and this price never changed. The staff did ask people to wear their face masks if they were walking around the hotel and didn't hesitate in having a quiet word with people. Some of my guests found this irritating but I found it reassuring, it appears this is the 'new normal'.

Staff at the wedding breakfast were well turned out, efficient and unobtrusive. The food was excellent with vegetarians and vegans catered for. Breakfast the following morning offered various tasty choices too.

I found Lisa and Kim to be very accommodating and all staff in the hotel pleasant to deal with. My new wife and I could not have wished for better. Thank you for a great experience.

First and foremost the location of the hotel is excellent . Beccles is one of the best spots on the Broads. Our room overlooked the river. The room and the bathroom were huge. The bed was really comfortable. There was plenty of storage. There are lots of lovely walks around the place. Also the coast is not faraway.

Disliked · It was horribly hot in the room on our first night. The temperature outside was no more than 25 degrees C during the day. You can't possibly open the old sash windows fully. The next 3 days were much cooler, so it was not too bad in the room at night.
There was no cleaning for the duration of our stay (4 nights). At the rate of 160 pounds a night we believe the cleaning should be provided daily (regardless of anything). Air-conditioning should be installed as well.
The service in the restaurant is a bit chaotic. I think the waiters are in need of a coordinator. The food in the evening was good, but at breakfast time it was hit-end-miss though.

We stayed here for one night on 03/08/20 whist undertaking the Angles Way long distance walk. On our arrival the staff were friendly and efficient, and upon entering our room (Room 1) we found it to be clean and spacious with a comfortable bed (only downside was not having that gorgeous river view!)
We ate in the restaurant that evening and found a good selection on the menu. Our food came in good time with polite and friendly service. No complaints about the food either, it was delicious! We then moved outside to sit by the river to have our coffees, and were lucky enough to see an otter ambling past, one of the highlights of our trip!
Breakfast the next morning was also a delight with favourable service. A good choice of options and all served to table (not buffet style due to covid compliance).
We found the whole hotel to be very clean, and staff had clearly made an effort to adhere to social distancing guidelines; Hand sanitisers in place, tables in the restaurant spaced accordingly etc, which helped us feel very safe.
A great stay, would thoroughly recommend.

The hotel is set in a beautiful location, alongside the riverbank, where you can sit and enjoy a drink in a very picturesque setting. Breakfast is freshly cooked to order and the staff were friendly and pleasant.
Although there’s an old world charm and character about the hotel, for us, it lacked the necessary comfort we would expect for the rate paid - hence the rating. We were in a small room on the second floor which had a very small window and low ceiling beams that came at an acute angle and this made moving along one side of the room quite tight. The same structure in the bathroom prevented the shower from being wall mounted. WiFi was poor.

I had been emailing back and forth with the events team about having my 21st birthday party at the Waveney in august, they were aware it was my 21st birthday party and told me they could accommodate for this and that I could hire either room for the evening.

Upon having an appointment today all I can say is unorganised, clueless and awful customer service.

On initial email, I was told the river suite would be £250 but I got quoted £500 in person.

First of all I was told I have to have a buffet, then I was told we don’t have to have a buffet, and then I was told we have to have a buffet for everyone. Then I was told that I could just have a buffet for some guests. The whole experience felt as if Kim was constantly contradicting herself.

We sat down to discuss prices and details, and I was then told that we are not the correct clientele for them and they don’t like having 21st birthdays because there will be drunk people, despite them being aware all along from my first initial email it was a 21st birthday. I was made to feel that we are not good enough and felt extremely degraded.

Really bad customer service and extremely rude. Me and my mum left feeling embarrassed due to the way we had been spoken to by Kim.

Me and my family have eaten here for years, and had numerous events such as anniversaries, christenings and countless meals, however we will not be back again due to the experience today.

Thank you for your review, whilst I appreciate your frustration at not being able to hold your 21st Birthday Party at the hotel: If you check back to our email correspondence with yourself, I can confirm that I, Lisa, quoted you on 9th March as follows:- Staithe Suite – weekday evening hire £250 (60 guests maximum) Waveney Suite – weekday evening hire £500 (60 – 200 guests for a buffet) We do cater for 21st Birthday Celebrations on the basis that they are a formal event, to include a 2/3 Course Meal or Buffet, with white linen dressed table cloths & iced water jugs on tables. This was made very clear in our emails. I also asked for information with regards to the ages of the invited guests, advising that ID’s would be requested. We understand that not everyone who confirms may attend, therefore you were offered the option to reduce your catering to reflect this, for example:- Invitations x 150, possibly 120 may attend, you may cater for 120 guests to minimise wastage. You were also given options for entertainment, a recommended DJ or our inhouse hotel DJ, these were declined and in your meeting of 17th May you asked if a speaker may be available to link a phone for your own music. Unfortunately, upon discussing this event with you in more detail in person on 17th May, Kim liaised with myself who had originally quoted as above, we came to the realisation that this would not be a formal celebration, and more of an un-catered drinking event. We regrettably felt that we would not be able to host this and it was advised to you that we are an independently owned, Grade I listed hotel and have our residents and other customers to consider with regards to noise levels etc.. Kim is a highly commended member of staff and we do not feel this is an accurate representation of your meeting with her. If you wish to discuss this further, please contact the hotel directly. Lisa

I literally booked at 9pm on a Friday night for the following day. Consequently I hadn't realised that not all rooms had a walk in shower. On arrival I explained my husband had recently had a replacement knee operation and would struggle to step into a bath if our room didn't have a walk in shower. Without any hesitation the lady on reception said she would upgrade us, and advised we had been on the second floor and with no lifts would have meant more walking up the stairs. We could not believe what we were given, a suite with four poster bed and views of the river. That evening we had dinner in the restaurant and were not disappointed with the food. Breakfast the following day was great, all the normal fresh fruit, cereals etc. and cooked to order breakfast which was lovely.
All the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our short stay.

We came to the Waveney House Hotel for dinner. It is a lovely hotel with a beautiful setting. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for our meal. We were told that there was a special offer, two courses from the specials menu for £16. We opted for this. We both had the pork terrine which was served with some nice toasted breads, but no butter. We didn’t immediately realise the lack of butter and the waiter had left the table before we realised. We couldn’t catch the attention of any of the staff so my husband had to go and ask at the bar for some butter. I had ordered the roast loin of pork, with roast potatoes and vegetables. I can only say that it was the most awful roast dinner I have experienced in a long time. The meat was soggy, as were the potatoes and the vegetables were unidentifiable. My husband had scampi and chips. He specifically asked for a smaller portion of chips but was given a normal portion. The scampi, when he removed the batter was not whole tails but little bits of questionable fish. When he came to pay the bill he was charged the full price of the starters and mains. It was rectified when he questioned it.
The staff were polite but not particularly attentive. I have visited the Waveney Hotel on quite a few occasions, always for lunch and have generally been quite pleased. I don’t feel that I will be very keen to return following our experience last night.

We came to this hotel for a late lunch in the patio outside overlooking the river, not busy so plenty of space. The food was lovely but at the next table were 4 young women smoking ! Two had cigarettes and two were vaping and the amount of smoke/vape wafting over our table was awful. I assumed smoking/vaping was not allowed in an eating area and was about to complain when my husband noticed a sign saying please don’t put cigarette butts in the river so realised it clearly was allowed. We have never had this problem before as most eating places in or outside are non smoking. Such a shame for a lovely eating place.

My wife and I spent three days in Suffolk and Norfolk in September 2020 and stayed the first night at the Waveney House Hotel. Beccles is a town that we have visited a number of times before but this was the first time that we had stayed there. We chose the Waveney House because of its location beside the River Waveney and we weren't disappointed. It is situated right on the river and the outside bar terrace directly overlooks it.

Our room was superb with its space, comfortable bed and excellent bathroom. The staff were very friendly and we were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The hotel was geared up for the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, with one way systems in place and good social distancing procedures for reception, the bar and the restaurant.

The hotel is near the town centre so we spent a happy hour walking round the pleasant streets and shops. The weather was good so we sat out on the terrace and enjoyed life passing by on the river and riverbank. We had booked a meal in the restaurant prior to arrival and we had this in the early evening. The food was good and my wife was particularly pleased with her steak. Breakfast was also good and we left the following morning saying that we would definitely go back there again.
