Whilst there we looked at the two suites overlooking the river and conservatory and they both were very spacious and well furnished (a touch of luxury in fact).
We experienced the hotel during a very quiet period in January when there was no activity on the river. I could imagine that the hotel could be very busy during the height of the tourist season.
All in all, a good hotel, good food, polite and helpful staff, good location convenient for exploring the town with its interesting range of shops and we would certaintly return if we planed a short break in Beccles.
Great courtesy and understanding was extended to us with various changes the arose due to Covid by both Lisa and Kim.
Our wedding was a modest affair within the maximum of 30 due to Covid restriction with more than half the guest travelling over three hours to reach the venue and requiring accommodation too. All guests were pleasantly surprised by their rooms and found the hotel to be in a beautiful location and full of character.
The riverside room we hired for the Wedding breakfast was quoted as being £500 from the start (before covid) and this price never changed. The staff did ask people to wear their face masks if they were walking around the hotel and didn't hesitate in having a quiet word with people. Some of my guests found this irritating but I found it reassuring, it appears this is the 'new normal'.
Staff at the wedding breakfast were well turned out, efficient and unobtrusive. The food was excellent with vegetarians and vegans catered for. Breakfast the following morning offered various tasty choices too.
I found Lisa and Kim to be very accommodating and all staff in the hotel pleasant to deal with. My new wife and I could not have wished for better. Thank you for a great experience.
Disliked · It was horribly hot in the room on our first night. The temperature outside was no more than 25 degrees C during the day. You can't possibly open the old sash windows fully. The next 3 days were much cooler, so it was not too bad in the room at night.
There was no cleaning for the duration of our stay (4 nights). At the rate of 160 pounds a night we believe the cleaning should be provided daily (regardless of anything). Air-conditioning should be installed as well.
The service in the restaurant is a bit chaotic. I think the waiters are in need of a coordinator. The food in the evening was good, but at breakfast time it was hit-end-miss though.
We ate in the restaurant that evening and found a good selection on the menu. Our food came in good time with polite and friendly service. No complaints about the food either, it was delicious! We then moved outside to sit by the river to have our coffees, and were lucky enough to see an otter ambling past, one of the highlights of our trip!
Breakfast the next morning was also a delight with favourable service. A good choice of options and all served to table (not buffet style due to covid compliance).
We found the whole hotel to be very clean, and staff had clearly made an effort to adhere to social distancing guidelines; Hand sanitisers in place, tables in the restaurant spaced accordingly etc, which helped us feel very safe.
A great stay, would thoroughly recommend.
Although there’s an old world charm and character about the hotel, for us, it lacked the necessary comfort we would expect for the rate paid - hence the rating. We were in a small room on the second floor which had a very small window and low ceiling beams that came at an acute angle and this made moving along one side of the room quite tight. The same structure in the bathroom prevented the shower from being wall mounted. WiFi was poor.
Upon having an appointment today all I can say is unorganised, clueless and awful customer service.
On initial email, I was told the river suite would be £250 but I got quoted £500 in person.
First of all I was told I have to have a buffet, then I was told we don’t have to have a buffet, and then I was told we have to have a buffet for everyone. Then I was told that I could just have a buffet for some guests. The whole experience felt as if Kim was constantly contradicting herself.
We sat down to discuss prices and details, and I was then told that we are not the correct clientele for them and they don’t like having 21st birthdays because there will be drunk people, despite them being aware all along from my first initial email it was a 21st birthday. I was made to feel that we are not good enough and felt extremely degraded.
Really bad customer service and extremely rude. Me and my mum left feeling embarrassed due to the way we had been spoken to by Kim.
Me and my family have eaten here for years, and had numerous events such as anniversaries, christenings and countless meals, however we will not be back again due to the experience today.
All the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our short stay.
The staff were polite but not particularly attentive. I have visited the Waveney Hotel on quite a few occasions, always for lunch and have generally been quite pleased. I don’t feel that I will be very keen to return following our experience last night.
Our room was superb with its space, comfortable bed and excellent bathroom. The staff were very friendly and we were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The hotel was geared up for the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, with one way systems in place and good social distancing procedures for reception, the bar and the restaurant.
The hotel is near the town centre so we spent a happy hour walking round the pleasant streets and shops. The weather was good so we sat out on the terrace and enjoyed life passing by on the river and riverbank. We had booked a meal in the restaurant prior to arrival and we had this in the early evening. The food was good and my wife was particularly pleased with her steak. Breakfast was also good and we left the following morning saying that we would definitely go back there again.
