The Califa was a gem of a find and a wonderfully eccentric hotel on so many levels. Set in the very heart of this pretty hilltop village, with similarities with Cacares, they have mutual Moorish past. The restaurant was lovely with a number of different areas to eat in and the food was excellent. The Califa is an ideal hotel... More

A beautiful hotel in the mountains. It is only for people ready to climb many stairs with their bags. Nice terraces with wonderful view for sunset drinks. A handy parking lot at a reasonable price. 10 euros / day.

Old hotels are noisy! Soundproofing didn't exist in the tenth century and parts of this hotel dates back more than one thousand years. The hotel consists of several different ancient dwellings some dating from the period of Moorish rule, which lasted from 711 until the town was captured by Saint Ferdinand of Castile in 1248. "Excuse me, Mister, can we... More

This hotel is physically charming, well maintained, has great views and is well located by a beautiful plaza. It has a good service staff. It is not all that comfortable however. Getting from A to Z inside the hotel is like walking up, down and sideways in a maze. The room we had, a junior suite, was economical but the... More

Was lucky enough to stay at the Califa for the second time this September. It is a unique and charming place and excellent value for money. The location is just perfect in the stunning Plaza de Espana with all of the lovely bars and restaurants of Vejer on your doorstep. The rooms are simple yet stylish, individual and well equipped.... Within the charming El Califa Hotel in the Plaza de España in Vejer is a bar terrace to enjoy a sundowner with the best cocktail selection anyone could wish for. Gin and tonic lovers will delight that not just Fever Tree tonic is available, but also Fentiman's that was told to me by Mrs Gin herself, Geraldine Coates of gintime.com,... More

We really enjoyed the Califa hotel for the decoration and kindness of their staff. We felt very welcome and this hotel is extremely comfortable, in the heart of the pueblo. The restaurant is very good and well priced. Breakfast is generous. The staff gave great advice on places to go to, visits, beach, restaurants. I could not recommend this place... More

Stayed here for the third time and have loved it every time. The rooms are quite basic but stylish, every member of staff is extremely friendly and the location is brilliant. However, it is the restaurant that is the real jewel, breakfasts are great and dinners are fantastic - chicken pastela is my all time favourite, but everything is delicious.... More

What an absolute gem of a hotel! The hotel is a maze of stairways and alcoves which is lovely to explore. The hotel manages the intimacy of a boutique hotel but enough space to feel you can't move around. The roof terrace has spectacular views and we thought the restaurant was fantastic. We booked the Africa suite which was just... More

We stayed in the 'El Torre' which has a bedroom, bathroom and living space with three windows with French balconies overlooking Plaza Espana. The view from the bedroom window was to die for and we left the window open the whole time ! The room itself was just great to hang out in. The fridge was left empty for us... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
La Casa del Califa is Vejer's No.1 hotel, which since its founding in 2001 has become a favourite place to stay in Andalucia for travellers and Spaniards alike. The Califa's origins date back to the 10th century, with the building sitting in the heart of Vejer in the palm filled Plaza de España. The historic hotel offers views across the marshes, forests, and hills of the Atlantic coast. The Califa offers a wide range of rooms, from simple doubles to luxurious suites, catering to guests of all tastes. The rooms are spread out among interwoven buildings linked by staircases and courtyards, with a characteristic Andalucian patio garden at its heart. The Califa is the ideal place from which to explore the Atlantic Costa de la Luz (the Coast of Light) & the 'Sierras' of Cádiz. The cultural and outdoor attractions are endless: walking, bike riding, trekking, birdwatching, painting, visiting Cape Trafalgar, seafaring Cádiz, long empty beaches, quiet palm-filled plazas, the sherry bodegas of Jerez, kitesurfing, horseback riding through pine forests, a day trip to Tangiers, sunset drinks on the hotel terrace, magical white towns...all this and more is a daily experience at La Casa del Califa. In our small and intimate hotel, you will find just the right balance of comfort and decor combined with wonderful views, tranquility, and of course excellent service. Convenient private covered parking is located just 80m. from the hotel. ... more   less
