The place is located a bit outside town, but close enough for a short walk. It gives you the jungle feeling with the river running near by and amamazing nature surrounding the guest house. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They serve a range of different traditional dishes and what we got was delicious. The fruit plate was just amazing, fresh from the garden!

We stay in Wisma Batu Mandi 4 days. There is beautiful garden near the river, tasty food and drinks, everybody take care about us, which was very nice. We did 2 days jungle trek with Chandra. It was absolutely amazing! Everything was very well organized. We saw many orangutans and have fun. If you want to spend the best time in Bukit Lawang, choose Wisma Batu Mandi!

Definitley recommend this place due to its quiet and serene location, just over the first bridge behind the Eco lodge on the path to the Bat Cave. Its the perfect place if you are looking for a relaxed chilled time on a limited budget. We paid 70IDR for a double room, which included a bathroom, fan, mosquito net and a hammock: compared to double that at places further up the river. The food served is good quality and varied Indonesian.
We visited all the places first reviewed by Lonely Planet, but still came back to Batu Mandi, it is by far the best value.
We booked with a guide (Udin), on a 2 day trekking tour. The first day was fantastic and we saw lots of orangatans, we walked for about 6 hours and camped outside, unfortunatley on the 2nd day the trekking was extremely limited and rather disappointing. I would strongly suggest making it clear with which ever guide you choose that 2 day trekking, means 2 days trekking and that a mosquito net is essential!

The owner of this accomodation immediately pressures you into booking transport or jungle tours through him. If you have you own proper arrangements he gets offended and sends weird messages to you through the night. Really strange behaviour!

It is not fair that you should feel pressured into the owner making additional money from tourists by booking through him.

Other guests we met who had stayed here also had the same issue with regards to pressure guests into booking through him!

Just realized i have stayed at Batu Mandi Guest house two years ago. We were with family of 11 persons (2 Dutch and 9 indonesians). Batu Mandi has an excellent location 150 mtrs from the bohorok river. Each room has a nice hammock in front of your room, nice garden and its quiet comparing to other guest houses. And it was really cheap, we have paid just 100 000 rupiah per room per night. (You can not flush the toilet, no hot water)

However, the staff of Batu Mandi seems only polite to foreign tourists not to Indonesians tourists. It was a shame.

I might go back to Batu Mandi due to its location. But will bring my own mattresses. As their mattress is so thin. My back hurted so much. But i dont complained, as it was just 100 k Rupiah.

From there we took a day trip to the jungle to see Orang Utan, we have paid 150K rupiah pp for the hiking, it was worth but too expensive.

Bukit Lawang is just beatiful location, I will go back for sure.

We have spent 4 nights in this guesthouse (or better 1 of them in the jungle). It is really difficult for me to write a recension, because I do not want to say anything bad. It is just that maybe we were not prepared for what means "basic". It is true that the garden is very big and beautiful and well tended to. The people are very nice and the food is good. The price is very cheap and there we begin....the 2 bedrooms were very spacious, but not much furniture in it (maybe a chair to lay your clothes on would be nice), mosquito nets had many holes in it. But the real issue was the bathroom: I knew the shower would be cold - ok (but really I hated it!) The toilet had no flush - ok, what's the matter?! But I could not imagine that there would be no washbasin and how much we would miss it! There was no shelf to put your things onto...I converted an ashtray to a soapholder. There was this faucet which served to fill the bucket to flush the toilet. It was right beside the toilet at the same height. There you had to brush your teeth and wash your face. I found it disgusting! My husband had to shave in the bedroom, because only there was a mirror. Strangely, there were some holes/tubes in the wall where a washbasin could have once been or maybe foreseen in the future...?! When I inquired about it I was told that guesthouses do not have washbasins, I should have booked a hotel! As I said, it was mainly because of our wrong expectations that we were not satified.
Oh, the hammock on the porch was very dirty. Internet in the reception area worked sometimes.
Now, I cannot compare this place because I have seen no other, but I guess they are all the same, so, all in all, I think I can recommend it, because it is in a very quiet area and for the plus points I have listed at the beginning.

If I could transport myself back there right now I so would! This is the most peaceful place you will find in Bukit Lawang. Away from the main tourist drag...although nothing is really that far away and the walk into town through the woods and nature trail is in itself beautiful. They have the most beautifully kept and enormous garden that is worth a mention in itself...my children helped pick the fruit for our fruit salad from around the garden, rambutan, pineapple, passion fruit etc etc...it's a perfect tropical retreat at a seriously small cost. The rooms are nothing special, but we only slept in there, and with a hammock on our little balcony and a swing hanging from the ancient tree overlooking the river who wants to be in the room! Batu Mandhi is on the path to the bat caves and orphanage ( definitely go visit if you can...it's not really mentioned anywhere but it's a really special pace), set back from the path a little bit, with the huge garden and an outside eating area to enjoy those amazing juices in the sun . There are only around 5 or 6 rooms next to each other, each with a little balcony and a hammock, just past the rooms down a small bank there is the river which is perfect for kids to play in...shallow, clean etc.
the family who own it are very friendly, so much laughing you hear coming from the house and the kitchen...the smiles are infectious! The Food is delicious and nothing is too much trouble, I can't rave enough about this place..
We also did an overnight jungle trek with them which was also brilliant. A small group...just us ( a family of 4) and 2 guides. We saw everything you want to see.... Lots of Orangutans, Sumatran peacocks, monkeys etc etc...we didn't have anything to compare it to but aft talking to a few other people who were staying elsewhere i think we got a great deal in terms of group size, quality of food and the company. Panjee is part of the Family and he was super fantastic with our kids....so much so we went back to stay there for a week a little bit later on in our trip.

Ps... Ask Jamila ( the mum) to take you for a BBQ to her secret picnic spot by the river! BBQ chicken, slices of pineapple and a sweet spicy soy sauce, washed down with a beer, followed by a swim in the clear blue river!

PPS...I mentioned the rooms are basic...but forgot to mention, extremely clean. The most important point when it comes to rooms!

I had a chance to spent 4 days in Bukit Lawang, and despite I haven't seen all resorts, seen some and this is one of the few with no view on the village, garden in very pretty and rooms are quite cosy (its still Indonesia, yes ) and you have place for getting sun ( very rare here, honestly)...sure I got nice off season price, but a great deal

This was one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Batu Mandi guesthouse is set among a magnificently maintained garden of tropical fruit and other local flora. If you are lucky some of the local monkeys might come by in the evening. Like many of the guesthouses in this part of the world, one of the great adventures is the footbridge you need to traverse to go back and forth to the village. The restaurant is also first class with a menu that tends to be a bit more expansive than others in this part of the world. Close to the bat cave and national park. I would thoroughly recommend Batu Mandi for the cost conscious, slightly adventurous tourist

Very very nice family runned guesthouse next to the jungle, lovely quite place with a beautifull garden with lots of fresh fruit! Try all the juices on the menu! ;)
We did a 2 day jungle trekking with Adi, we made an reservation in advance by Nazzarudin! If you email him and make a reservation, you get the night you arrive for free, always good! ;) The price is very good for what you get! We saw 5 orang utans from very close! Adi was our guide, great guy, knows a lot of the jungle, the animals, the trees, the plants! Sometimes the klimb was a bit heavy for me, adi was helpful and will always do his best to make your stay there unforgetable! He carried fruit the whole time with him and we eat it when we had a rest for extra energie! Very nice!!! The day after the sleep in the jungle we went back to the guesthouse on the tubes!! A lot of fun with Adi!!
We stayed a few more nights after our trekking in Batu Mandi, so relaxing in the hammock :)
Such nice people and the food is good and the price even better! ;) My friend did again a tubing on the river with adi and a friend the day before we left!! They had a good time :)
We also went to the bat cave with Tarsim, worth a visit, it's not that far from the gueshouse! Tarsim is learning english which was already good to make a conversation, great guy!!!
We had a time over there we won't forget! Go send an email to nazzarudin and enjoy your stay and the jungle!! :) :)
