Thomas retreat and jungle track experience:
I was in Thomas retret three nighs last 22 of August 2022, with jungle track and one night in the jungle camp. Thomas the owner it’s one amazing host, I text by WhatsApp (contact in website) him even from KL and he organize everting, the transportation from Medan to Bukit Lawang, accommodation, food, jungle track and the transportation to my next spot Lake Toba, all with a very fair price.
The accommodation it’s very well maintained, whit hot and cold water bathroom in room, clean and comfortable, nice food and Bitang always cold, amazing view to the river and lots of chicken monkey all the time around.
My guide in the jungle track was Abri, all the time very attentive, with huge jungle knowledge that make a “difficult track” be like a walk in the beach that allow me go all the way in my flip flops.
We spot several orangutans, Thomson monkeys; white hands gibbons; baboons; chicken monkeys and in the river varanus lizards. Delicious food with lots juicy fruits all the time. Very pleasant evening after dinner, and if you have lucky to go with guide Abri ask him to play the game” jungle mathematic” and surely you will get lots of fun!..;)
After our amazing breakfast we went to some waterfall near by for a proper wake up, and after lunch the tube rafting till the village it’s the cherry in the top of the cake, a bit of adrenaline with amazing jungle views from the river. Something priceless that you need to do at least one time when visiting Sumatra!..

We stayed at Thomas retread and made a tour with them through the jungle.

About Thomas and his Team.
Every one of them was super nice and friendly. Very welcoming.
Just asked them about the jungle, the area… they will have an answer.
If you need any assistance with transportation or anything else they are more then willing to help you. Even in advance.
Thomas and his Team really make the difference staying in Bukit Lawang.

The accommodations.
Everything was clean and comfortable.
The retread is directly on the river and you get a nice few into the jungle. We also Ware able to go for a little swim in the river. Which you only can do their as it is shallow and the river isn’t strong their.

The food was excellent, they also have a gin choice of fresh juices wich where delicious.

About the jungle tour, we couldn’t have asked for more.
Their knowledge about the jungle and the animals living there is very well. They where able to tell us so many things.
The tour was well organized with fruit snacks and meals.
We also went down the river in big tubes. You shouldn’t miss the tube rafting directly to your stay.

It was just a great time overall. I highly recommend Thomas retreat.

Stay, hike, have fun while you have a nice chat.

Big thanks and a big smile to Thomas and his Team.

Our whole stay at Thomas' retreat was just perfect! If you ever have the chance to travel to the north of Sumatra to see the Orang Utans, do it! And if you do, stay at Thomas' retreat!
Thomas and his whole staff are just super helpful, professional, funny and experienced. We organized an airport transfer via Thomas, which worked smoothly, stayed at his accommodation for 3 nights, and did the one day trekking tour through the jungle. The accommodation was just as described, with an incredible view, the food in the restaurant was really tasty and the staff made us feel at home there. Special shoutout to Thomas himself, wo organized a super sweet birthday surprise for my friend, to Matius who showed us the village and explained a lot about the nature, and to Ren and Tondi who were just the best jungle guides we could imagine.
We will definitely come back!

Don't expect to get much sleep on Saturday night as there is live music from about 9 pm to 2 am, but on the other hand , if you are joining the fun the group is pretty good. There are tables by the river and many locals attend the function. Unfortunately the place is very quiet during the day as there were not too many visitors during February

We did the jungle trek with 2 days 1 night with Toni, Putra, Iyon and Matius from Thomas Retreat. The guides explained us a lot about the nature and were eager to show us the best places to see the orang utangs. The food and accommodation in the jungle was very good and we had an amazing experience. Would highly recommend it.

The experiences from the 3 days/2 nights Jungle Trek will stay with me forever. Our guides Erwin and Matius spotted every chameleon and monkey, and had always a joke to share. I felt safe throughout, and the food was truly a dream. Thomas Retreat is a must for any nature enthusiast. Thomas assists with every question and arranges transportation to the airport for you.

We did our trek with Thomas Retreats guides. They were really friendly, always willing to explain the wild life and nature to us.
We had an amazing experience watching outangs outangs as our guide walked us away from the other groups.
The sleeping camp is of basic comfort but we slept well.
Overall the organization was perfect it was really nice.

I was very happy with the room and especially my guide Rain and Jo. They were knowledgeable, patient and thoughtful. The food was plenty and tasty. The trek was lovely we were lucky to have seen 7 orangutans, one of which was a male and many animals and magical plants. January is not as rainy as people think, we haven’t had any rain.

After reading a lot of positive reviews about Thomas' Retreat, we decided to book four nights at Thomas' Retreat. Our first night we spend in the hostel next to Thomas' hostel, this was because the four rooms in his Retreat were already given to other tourists. After all not a big problem, the room we had here eventually was a lot better than the rooms of Thomas' Retreat.

Our biggest problem of staying at Thomas' Retreat weren't the rooms, but from the moment we met Thomas, we didn' t feel welcome. It seemed like Thomas only payed real attention to a select group of tourists. Before we arrived we already made plans for our time in Bukit Lawang, it seemed like we weren't interesting anymore for Thomas because it was clear he couldn't sell any more of his (too expensive) trips and packages to us. Besides this he was very negative about the plans we had made for the rest of our trip, about other guides, and about almost every other thing we talked about.

We booked a jungle trip with a night in the jungle and were very happy we got another guide. A guide who was enthusiastic and didn't put himself in the center of attention.
