I’ll start with the goods: the onsen and gardens are as advertised. Even with limited views of Mt Fuji, we were impressed by the upkeep of the backyard gardens. Shuttle pick up was convenient as well. The service was not the best, though. There were several examples: 1) my younger brother left for onsen for more than an hour and could not be contacted. The rest of us are worried but women so I found a manager and begged him on google translate to please go to the male side of the onsen to check on him. He promised he would do so. Then he disappeared and did not give any more updates. When I finally tracked this manager down again after 20 mins, he said he’s found my brother a while back and asked him to go back to the room. When I went back to our room and saw no trace of my brother returning, it only made things more confusing and left me very distressed. i only found my brother after another 20 mins. Turns out nobody went to check on him. The manager ignored my safety concern (which I don’t think was too demanding. The staffs were standing around unoccupied anyways). He even actively lied so he could get out doing (or asking another staff, if he’s busy) a simple but urgent request. This made me feel like this hotel’s staff have no regards for the customer’s wellbeing or even safety, at all. They would rather lie and have you panic about what’s going on. I’d rather he told me he doesn’t want to help. I would’ve reached out to another tourist and might have more luck there. 2) unhygienic dinner. The kaiseki dinner was great, but we found hair that do not belong to us in one of the dishes (doesn’t belong to us because color and length don’t match any of us). Could be a coincidence, but we had diarrhea / food poisoning the few days after our stay. As avid travelers, we did not expect this sort of issue in Japan, let alone in a reputable hotel like this. Didn’t have this anywhere else in Japan though 3) shuttle drop-off not as advertised The hotel FAQ boasts the shuttle service as one of the perks. That means pickup from and drop-off at nearby stations. When it’s time to leave though, we were told they will not provide shuttle drop off and we have to pay for a taxi ourselves. This wouldn’t have been an issue except a lot of taxis only accept cash and we were in a rush to catch the bus back to Tokyo. Another staff (as well as the website) told us there WILL be a bus to drop us off on time and we did not bother to carry enough cash on us. The arbitrary change in rules almost disrupted our entire packed itinerary. TL;DR - facilities are great. Services every now and then inferior to the other Japanese hotels we’ve stayed at for less than 1/4 of the price. Felt like the staff actively avoided helping or communicating with those who are not native japanese…

First time in Mount Fuji area and parkland. This hotel / ryokan is gigantic! It almost felt like being in some sort of cruiseship with different sections and corridors and restaurants, etc. So initially, it was a bit overwhelming because of it's size. The hotel / ryokan itself is spread over 4 buildings, and has a beautiful and huge garden. Staff all appeared to work very hard, seemingly polite, but with very poor / non-existent English. So beware if you can't speak any Japanese. The room was basic, small, and functional. We had 4 rooms - 3 ryokan style and 1 western style with an outdoor bath. The western style room was more expensive, but smaller than the other standard ryokan rooms. There were redundant furniture in the room which made it very cramped. It all comes across as a very "commercially run" ryokan. They even charged us for a smallish bucket of ice! The air-conditioning system did not work at all. So the room got very stuffy and warm unless you open the windows / doors. Breakfast was good, with a variety of good quality Japanese and Western options. That was really the main saving grace. The kaiseki dinner we had was the worst I've had in any ryokan. All pre-prepared and cold, and rather tasteless. The staff were more interested to finish quickly and go home! All in all, this was a huge let-down. It's a very impersonal mass market type ryokan. Not recommended. …

The room allocated had black mould in the bathtub and cockroaches. When I asked if they could do anything, with the help of an interpreter, they neither apologized nor offered to clean the room. Apparently, they were fully booked for the night. The dinner was very average. It is a huge hotel with hundreds of rooms and extremely touristy.

Staff were very friendly, and the scenery is beautiful & hotel was clean. However, the hotel itself is so dated. The rooms have cheap fake wooden floors in the bedrooms etc. The general feeling of the hotel is that its 20 years overdue a refurbishment.

This is my second time here and it was again a great experience. What's great about it? The first is the setting. It is very close to Mount Fuji so you've an amazing view of Fujisan from your room, Bordering on what appears to be a forest, the gardens are immaculately maintained and the fall leaves were on show when we arrived. Their are areas for you to sit and have tea or a snack or just a peaceful sit. The second is the experience. They give you some vouchers to have a tea ceremony (it's actually just a snack and a tea now in their tea room by the river - yes, there's a river running through the property). Do walk around the gardens, it's beautiful and calming. There's an outdoor foot spa for you to dip your feet in to add to your enjoyment in the gardens. When you get to your room, you are then given your clothes during your stay; essentially a kimono. This is what you wear whilst at the hotel. We booked a kaiseki with our room and this was a 10 course meal with some exquisite dishes. We had a large variety of regional dishes which were expertly crafted and served on our own private room by a lovely lady. Her English wasn't so good so we conversed in Mandarin!! Finally, we watched a drum show which was very well done by a group of older and young men. They were friendly engaging and expert at their craft. Third are the onsen. This is where the place excels. The public baths are very nicely done. It's clean, there's a women's area and a men's area and each has an indoor and outdoor section. The showers are well equipped with gels and shampoos and you have your own locker to put your valuables. But the stat of the show is on the 10th floor! They have a rooftop onsen overlooking Fuji mountain. It is spectacular. First time I came, it was snowing when I went up in the morning. There was no-one there. This time I went and unfortunately, Fuji had started to cloud over in the afternoon (they switch between men and women attending morning or afternoon every month). Best time is normally morning when it is clear but this time, the morning was overcast and my partner couldn't see anything. But it's wonderful when you do have that view lying in the hot onsen! Finally, the rooms are very nice. Our room last time had a private outdoor onsen. This time, no private onsen but very nice still. 800 sq ft and two rooms we never used but it's spacious and comfortable. They turned all the heating on in November fearing it was cold but we turned it all off as it was just too warm. The one downside is a strict 3pm check in and 10am check out time. If you are coming by the Fuji Excursion train from Tokyo, then you will arrive in the area very early and leave the area quite a long time after you've checked out. My husband and I stayed here for one night at the beginning of October 2020. Check-in time was at 2pm, and the staff members were very efficient and polite, dressed in lovely “yukata”. The room had a nice layout, with two double beds and a television, a separate sitting area with another television and mini-bar area, and a large sofa-bench/bed area by window from which one could view a very large Mt Fuji. There was an indoor bathroom area and a separate shower room that lead to an outdoor hot-bath which was not too hot. I did not even have to add any cold water to it. There was a rooftop hot bath (for women only) and nice larger hot-spring baths on different floors. Other smaller family-baths could be reserved. Note that the towels in the rooms do not have to be taken to these baths since supplies are located there. Pictures may not be taken in any of the baths. The room had guest “yukata” and haori(warm vests) and also another type of top/slacks set which may be worn throughout the hotel. (Note that you might ask in advance about the size ranges of these items). “Tabi” socks were provided for free in our room, and free, packaged small bath towels and amenities were provided for each of us. Two free bottles of water were provided, but items stored in the mini-bar refrigerator need to be paid for upon checkout (as explained by the room attendant upon checking in). There was a nice free selection of tea and coffee in the room, with a nice cup of Japanese tea and a complimentary piece of nutty chocolate upon while being oriented to the room and the layout of the hotel. The level of our room included a free “Taiko” show in the evening (2 shows each night), with ours starting at 8:45pm(the second one). Guests may choose either Japanese or western-style meals. We stayed her for 2 nights at this hotel to enjoy Fuji and lake Kawaguchi. We saved up and stayed at budget hotels during our road trip through Japan so we could get a better room with a private bath (i have a tattoo) with a view of Fuji. - Location: The best way to acces the hotel is to go to Mt.Fuji station and take their shuttle bus. Tip: You can also take a train form Mt.Fuji station to Kawaguchiko station to visit the lake. - service: from the moment you check in to the moment you leave this hotel the staff greets you and says goodbye with a smile. They don't just show you to your room, they give you a full explanation of the hotel and amenities (also in English). - Room with private bath: our room was worth every penny in my opinion. It was expensive for our standards, but normal for such luxury. We had a good view of Fuji from our bath and room. Is is very spacious and comfortable. - Breakfast and dinner: both meals were good, but dinner was more of an experience. We had dinner two times, once in a separate room with multiple course menus with Japanese specialities. - Bar: the hotel bar was one of the best i have seen so far (i tend to always check out the bars at hotels). There was a professional piano player and good cocktails with a view of the beautiful hotel garden at night. - Garden: You must take some time to walk around their exquisite garden with a foot bath, night lights, river and tea house (with a special free tea ceremony for all guests) Overall amazing hotel that i cannot stop to talk about. Although it rained and we were not able to view Mt. Fuji, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Kaneyama. We stayed in the mountain view modern Japanese room with open-air bath for 1 night. The room was very large with 2 beds. The furnishings are modern with 2 televisions, the bigger one in the living room area and a smaller one in the bedroom area. The room had a fresh, cedar smell. There are 3 onsens on the property plus the open air bath in the room. The picture that advertise this hotel was taken from the open air onsen on the top floor. There are 2 other bathes on the first floor. It was very relaxing soaking in the onsen. We enjoyed the view of the Japanese Garden while sipping green tea in the Tea Room. The gardens surrounding the hotel were beautiful. The Kaiseki dinner was amazing. Each dish was served individually and the taste and quality was superb. There is a nightly taiko drum performance at 8:30 pm and Bingo is played immediately after the performance. The quality of this hotel is perpetuated by the hotel staff. They are friendly and helpful and they try their best to make you feel special. I brought a group of 20 here and we lucked out in terms of Mt. Fuji visibility. Three days of clear views. Nothing prepared us, though, for the view from the rooftop bath. Nothing but Fuji-san right in our faces. No obstructions and no distractions. I think we would have put up with lower quality rooms and meals in trade for that view, but the standard rooms were as nice as can be while a few who upgraded their rooms enjoyed really spectacular accommodations with their own private baths. As a group, we ate together in a large, private room. Food and service were both excellent. Not only would I bring another group to Kaneyamaen, but I am planning to do so next fall.

A group of us (5 friends) stayed here 2 weeks ago in one of the premium rooms. The entire experience from arrival was amazing. The service is beyond attentive throughout the hotel. The onsens are well maintained and a pleasure to bathe in, and indeed the rooftop onsen for a Fuji sunrise is a one in a lifetime experience. We had a meal in the room which was served over several courses by a dedicated attendant. The meal was a perfect dive in to Japanese cuisine and even ingredients I wouldn't normally choose were perfectly crafted in an highly appetising way. We found the gardens in the evening and they are not to be missed. They are not only huge, but so well maintained and beautiful. There's an entire church on-site for those considering something more. The drum show was cute, definitely interesting but not necessarily a must see. Finally as you would expect from a hotel of this caliber, the room was spacious, clean, with comfortable beds, a powerful shower and private deck area with dedicated onsen. Would absolutely recommend as a must for anyone in the area capable of dropping a little cash for a truly epic ryokan stay.…
