I just returned from W Maldives a few days ago. I had planned on visiting this place once as a bucket list item, but now I'm spending a lot of time figuring out how I can get back there as soon as possible and bring friends with me. I need a word stronger than "amazing" to describe my experience.
I booked a spectacular over water 1 bedroom villa and it was exactly as pictured on the website. I was glad I had chosen a villa on the lagoon side because I think it's quieter and less windy than the other side, but still plenty breezy enough to keep you cool while relaxing on your hammock. And the hammock is really one of the best features of this villa. I was worried the lagoon might be teaming with people, jet skis, etc. but I found it to be very quiet and serene. And the best thing about being on this side was the ability to watch the sunset from your hammock.
I've never really been a snorkler but I'm so glad I did it this time. They let you take flippers, masks & snorkels back to your room and keep them there for the duration of the trip- and at no additional charge! Snorkling in the lagoon was pretty cool but swimming out to the gap in the reef was amazing!
I found the food to be quite good and I appreciated being able to "secret" menu items. Yes, it's expensive but you have to expect that at a resort this nice on an island this remote. I wish you could just get the filtered water in the Kitchen at lunch and dinner like you can at breakfast and not have to buy water imported from France. It wasn't the cost, it was the environmental impact of shipping it to the island.
And beware- this island is close to the equator and there is little pollution, which translates into flash frying your skin in 20 mins over the water if you're not careful!
But what really hooked me on this hotel was the service. Everyone genuinely seemed to care about my experience from the GM on down. I was blown away by the staff lining up to enthusiastically wave hello to me as the float plane pulled up- reminded me of Downton Abbey. Greeted with a smile and beverage by Anuj and his team, followed by a quick island tour was the ideal reception. I couldn't believe throughout my stay how everyone seemed to know my name and my likes/dislikes. Shows how they genuinely care about my experience. Everyone went out of their way to make sure my expectations were exceeded, especially Chunky who arranged a tour "behind the curtain" for me, suggested hidden menu items to try and bought me a drink to get to know me better. And when my departing plane was delayed by 15 mins, Anuj bought me a beer for the trouble even though that wasn't his fault at all.
Service. Scenery. Experience. You can't beat W Maldives.

Sometimes you visit a place and you get so excited that you’re looking for ways to stay longer. While visiting the W Maldives I was figuring out if I could start working there as a means to stay longer amidst the staff that seemed to be having so much fun. I ended up following the hotel’s and GM’s Instagram.

W Maldives truly feels like paradise. Obviously the island is a stunning piece of nature that is being preserved as best as possible by W. However, it’s especially the treatment by the staff that makes you feel that life cannot be any better. This goes across all members of the team: The dive instructors who are just excited as you to see the underwater life, the housekeeping team that perfectly times the renewal of the room ahead of your return from breakfast, and the restaurant staff that helps you pick out your favorite donuts from the wall. Any help you need can be arranged through a WhatsApp message to the team. They also enthusiastically supported us in making this the perfect way to start our honeymoon through arrival surprises and regular congratulations. Imagine this level of service by a team that is working in tough conditions (limited to island resources, far away from family, endless covid measures, island sand & weather).

There are endless ways to make the stay unique. Despite the island being of a small size, there are so many things to do to make this vacation your own. We filled ours in with snorkeling along the beautiful house reef (spotting sharks, turtles, and countless fish), diving at world famous sites, (water) sports, and booking the close by private island all to ourselves. Such an experience!

The rooms are crazy spacious and designed with entertainment in mind (glass window in the floor for ocean views, stairs access to the lagoon, bathtub with an ocean view, full & easy to connect sound system). The outside is visibly difficult to maintain in this harsh ocean climate, but still a job well done.

The restaurants all have unique enjoyable moments: Watch the sunset at the cocktail bar, see the sharks swimming by during your evening dinner at FISH, feel the sand in your feet and smell the BBQ flavors at FIRE, and dip your toes into the water while sitting at the breakfast restaurant. At any occasion you just feel that extra bit of joy while eating delicious food.

Budget wise the W Maldives has been a disaster for us as dinner will easily set you back 200$ and a couple of diving sessions ~1000$ (two people). But this can be expected and makes that you’ll W Maldives visits will be for special occasions. You can enjoy many things for free (sun bathing, yoga & sports sessions, snorkeling), but you definitely should burn your cash to experience this place to its fullest.

We’d love to go back and will do so as soon as budget & time allows us. For now we’ll stick to the Instagram posts.

I had visited the W Maldives last month with a group of 9 people in total.

The hotel has such a personal connection that when we got off out seaplane flight, the hotel staff greeted us by name. This was just a glimpse into what was to come.

We had all kinds of dietary restrictions from person to person and they really catered to all our needs. We had some people who were vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, and they catered everything while remembering who had what restriction.

The water sports are all amazing and the staff really made sure we enjoy!

Arun at the Wet bar was amazing, hooking us up with the best cocktails and some amazing nachos.
Chunky is always available around the island to help you out with anything from extending your stay to booking water sports.

IMPORTANT!
If you are going to go scuba diving, I do recommend booking everything well in advance because when we came, even though the hotel was not even at 50% capacity, there was no space for even one person to go scuba diving over the 4 nights we were there.

Room Tips:
If you're in the Vice Presidential suite/ Two Bedroom Water Villa, choose room 302 because that is the one with the best sunset views.
Lagoon view villas have lesser privacy than ocean view villas but the hammocks (only in lagoon view) are amazing so it depends on what your preferences are.

The resort is breathtaking with so much to offer. We stayed in an over-water hut which was truly worth money. The water is pristine and we could spend all day watching countless fish swim by through the peep hole in the floor! The outdoor pool along with the lagoon give you plenty of opportunities to be in water. The beach is also spectacular with soft, white sand. The whole island is amazing with awesome views all around!

The breakfast/brunch food has a great selection of Maldivian food along with western items. The restaurant have a variety options - you just have to choose what you fancy! Take advantage of the happy hours during your stay at the bars that have some awesome over water seating.

All in all, this was a great experience. I wish we could have spent more time here!

I don’t normally write reviews, but the staff here have blown me away and set new standards to how great customer service can be. I was debating between the St. Regis, JW and the W and so glad I picked here. Starting from the first point of contact landing at the airport to the second I departed, I felt I was being taken care of by family.

You might get a “newer” room at other resorts, but you can get that anywhere. You came to the Maldives to relax, unwind, enjoy the waters and that is what the W Maldives provides. Their rooms are amazing, the water is amazing, BUT the staff is what will make you remember the Maldives.

Take note other hotels...it isn’t hard to have someone sit down and chat with your guests on a personal level for 5-10 minutes. I have stayed in the most expensive and luxury suites across the world, but the one thing that makes me come back to a property and remember is the people there. You can buy a 1500 sqft apartment style hotel room...you can’t buy genuine people.

Thank you W Maldives and Chunky Matthews!🔥💪 see you soon

We booked a stay at the W Maldives on very short notice (48h before arrival) due to another trip being cancelled due to Covid-19. We thus we arriving with very limited pre-planning and knowledge.
We spent 7 nights at the property and have only positives to say with the staff being a particular highlight. Everyone was extremely attentive and if you made the slightest impression of waiting for or looking for something, someone would approach you quickly to support. What we found particularly impressive is that staff would recognise you shortly after arrival and that, without even mentioning your room or table location, would serve you whatever you just ordered at a counter or with another staff member. This is impressive since the resort has close to 80 villas which at full occupancy makes quite a few people around. All operations, be it at restaurants or any of the other activities ran smoothly and things were just "working" in the background without one ever having to remind someone. This is likely in large parts due to the excellent work of Jessica (F&B) and Chunky (Guest Services) who are just fabolous.
I won't go into more details about activities, restaurant menus etc. as there is ample information about these out there.
One word of advice though: Given the fact that you are on a remote island in a country which needs to import lots of things and this paired with the price level of the hotel itself makes for elevated prices for all activities, food and drinks. Given the quality and logistics involved these prices are justifiable but one should be aware that the incidentals bill will add to you total. To not be disappointed or frustrated by that, plan accordingly and expect to spend (of course depending on travel style) at least USD 200 per pax per day on food, drinks and activities (can easily be more of course).

About a 25 minute sea plane ride from Male International over picturesque small atoll islands, and you are greeted by friendly staff and a welcome cocktail. This was the beginning of an absolutely magnificent 9 days. This resort is on a small heart shaped island with about 75 rooms - most of which are over water bungalows.
We had a one bedroom over water bungalow, and it was amazing - with spacious bathroom, glass bottom section, beautiful private deck outfitted with cabana seating, lounge chairs, overwater hammock, outdoor shower & infinity pool!

All the island beaches have gorgeous powder white sand, and a healthy reef with loads of fish, turtles, and reef sharks = great snorkeling, scuba diving, and a fully stocked water sports shack, including glass bottom kayaks, kite surfing, paddle boards, jet skis & even a motor sail yacht! This resort also boasts a private island (Gaathafushi) that is available for private lunch, sunset, or dinner excursions.

The hotel had 3 restaurants and 2 bars with a variety of wonderful dishes, however I highly recommend speaking with the staff about trying all the delicious Maldivian cuisine! We did this a couple days into our trip, and chef Baka would come to our table to discuss dietary restrictions and get a feel for our tolerance to spice levels, (as tradition is on the fiery side) each day and discus a menu. The last day of our stay, he prepared a special dinner of bbq whole snapper that was caught that day!

The Away Spa is situated over the water on the East side of the island. The treatment rooms are calming, and our anniversary massages ended with a bubble bath on the a private deck looking to the ocean - so very relaxing!

I cannot say enough good things about the staff at this hotel. They are Absolutely over the Top, but I want to give a special mention to, chef Baka who is a master, waiter Lonsi who recommended chef Baka & the Maldivian cuisine to us, and came in on his day off to see that we had an amazing dinner our final evening, Silva the bartender at Sip who took great care of us each evening for sunset, Nifras who made several recommendations throughout the week and special designer drinks for us at Wet Bar, and of course Chunky Mathew the W insider who checked on us every day to ensure we had the Best trip ever!! Hats off & major props to this entire crew for all their hard work! Cheers!

It was the first time in the Maldives and the W didn't disappointed. We stayed on an overwater bungalow and the room was beautiful, super clean and the amenties were great. The staff was super helpful and always ready to help with all the reuqests/needs we had. My husband and I travel a lot and this is the first time we both agreed that we would both LOVE to come back since everything was so perfect.
The food is not cheap but it was expected since you're in the middle of the ocean but every single meal we had were wonderful, tasty and well executed.

Everything is literally just PERFECT, we would not know what to criticize. The staff is very friendly and always in a real good mood, the general manager is very active around the resort and really nice and talkative. From the moment you get out of the seaplane you feel welcome and can relax 100% at this hotel! Will visit again for sure !

Most importantly: the reef is awesome - fish of all sorts, turtles, sharks, mantas almost every time we went snorkeling!

Excellent place to stay in the Maldives. At this resort you really get the best of both worlds — the luxury and the fun. Many five star places would be just about the royal service but this resort went the extra mile and entertained us fully throughout the duration of our stay. Their philosophy of “whatever, whenever” (as long as it’s reasonable) really shows just how far they are willing to go to let guests enjoy the unique experience of staying in the Maldives. Some of the special positives that come with the resort:

1) The house reef is breath taking and a great reason to pick this particular resort. We were never bored staring at the tropical fish and small reef sharks swimming around the resort; it felt like we were living in a natural aquarium. You can enter the water from just about anywhere, whether from your room, the beach or on one of the ladders on the wooden path — all as if it’s your own backyard!

2) The resort had an extensive list of available tours relative to other resorts we’ve looked at and they do their best to ensure guests enjoy their time spent off the island as well. Some activities are more expensive than others but having a full menu is a definite plus.

3) The rooms are designed very well. We stayed in both the Beach Villa and Overwater Villa, and both are enjoyable in different ways - just because you cannot get the room you want there is no reason to book at a different resort.

4) The quality of the food/dining experience is extremely competitive. Expensive but I guess that’s just the price you pay for when staying in the Maldives. Totally worth the extra dollars though. Definitely go for the lobster sashimi at Sip (one of their restaurants).

5) Service is unparalleled - All staff was very friendly and helpful. I really liked their WhatsApp system where you can just chat them 24 hours a day whenever you want or need something. They literally work around the clock and will accommodate your needs in a timely manner at any hour of the day/night. Obviously you can still call them with the room phone as well.

W Maldives is far enough that I don't think there is a boat available to the resort. (some resorts are closer).. I would plan on staying over at a local hotel and taking an early seaplane flight out.

They had outlets that worked with US plugs in the bedrooms. I had an adapter and did have to use it with my flatiron in the bathroom, otherwise no issues.
