I can honestly say that each time gets better with great hospitality and fabulous food.

We knew from our previous visits that everything would be immaculate and we had no Covid worries.

On arrival the Covid policies were explained and throughout our stay were rigorously observed with daily temperature checks on entering the house, hand sanitiser bottles throughout and our room only entered by my wife and I

Good fresh food cooked to perfection and good company made for a great 3 nights.

Thanks both and hope to see you again soon.

Roger and Gwen.

Having been forced to close in March 2020 (due to the Coronavirus UK lockdown) - and then, in late August, tentatively taking our first very cautious steps to re-open (with all government rules and regulations strictly adhered to) ..... it was such a huge boost to hear from you, and then to learn that you would like to come and stay for a few days - your fourth visit no less ! Thankyou for such such a huge vote of confidence.....! It was an absolute delight to see you again - we so enjoyed having you all to ourselves . AND it was SO reassuring to find that you had no Covid worries - but rather - were relaxed, chilled out, perfectly comfortable, and very much at ease. Our heartfelt thanks to you both - for your very kind words - and also, for your convivial and most welcome company. With our warmest wishes, Pauline and John.

Just spent two nights at Henshaw Barn as part of a week touring ‘The North’. All the previous reviews were spot on. This boutique B&B is ideal. i) the location is perfect for Hadrians Wall as we were able to walk directly from Henshaw Barn to Vindolanda in approx 30 minutes, ii) the food prepared byJohn was fantastic (as an amateur/wanna be foodie I was extremely impressed)). However, most of all iiii) we enjoyed the relaxed ambience and real desire from both Pauline and John to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Therefore, if you are reading this review and pondering where to stay for easy access to Hadrians Wall whilst enjoying great food and fantastic company - don’t hesitate - this is the place for you!!!

"This is the place for you!" - We like to think so! And thank you SO much for this very special review! After 18 months of almost permanent closure it was so lovely (despite restrictions) to be able to welcome guests into our home - not quite as we would wish - but verging on 'normal.' And to meet such warm, appreciative, and convivial guests was so reassuring - and such a bonus. Huge thanks for your thoughtful and pertinent comments, and for the pleasure of your company.... We hope the unique, diverse, and delicious delights of this stunning part of the UK may prompt a return....so much to see and do....so many lovely people, and lovely places. Our heartfelt thanks for your kind words and recommendations... And our very best - Pauline and John.

Recently, on the hottest day in the UK, my husband and I and our two daughters stayed at John and Pauline’s luxurious B & B whilst walking Hadrian’s Wall Path. Their home and hospitality was like an oasis!!
We were welcomed with tea and scones with homemade jam by John.
We had two beautifully decorated bedrooms, a cosy private living room with a refrigerator filled with cold drinks, shining bathrooms, and every space was so clean. We were over the moon!
The breakfast served in their beautifully decorated dining room was superb!
Their garden is gorgeous, and they are so friendly. We felt very at home.
Next day John provided us a lift to get on our track. In short: we had a lovely stay at Henshaw Barn B & B and would recommend John and Pauline’s B & B.

I stayed four nights at Henshaw Barn B&B while exploring Hadrian's Wall. Pauline and John are truly wonderful hosts who treated me like family and made my stay very comfortable. John's hearty breakfasts were a perfect start to every morning, and afternoon G&Ts in the kitchen with Pauline and John a welcome respite after a long day of sightseeing. G&Ts were followed by John's excellent dinners coupled with Pauline's thoughtful wine pairings, and lively kitchen table conversation. I stayed in The Granary which was very clean and comfortable, and came with a spacious well-appointed bathroom. There is also a comfortable lounge - stocked with refreshments and reading material - for relaxing. Everything is well maintained and decorated, and you can tell Pauline and John take great pride in keeping it that way. The location is perfect for anyone wishing to explore Hadrian's Wall and other nearby sites and parks too. I look forward to staying with Pauline and John again in the future!

We recently spent two nights here in a relatively small room with a spacious and very comfortable bed and an en-suite shower room. The other guest room was unoccupied ,so we also had sole use of a small sitting room . There were lovely views over the surrounding countryside.
We enjoyed the delicious dinners cooked by chef, John chosen in advance from a limited menu; there were also excellent breakfasts with a range of choices,
John and Pauline are welcoming hosts , who were able to help us get the most out of our time near to Hadrian’s Wall by recommending sites and museums.

The best B&B we had during our Hadrians Wall hike. Lovely people, great service and extra 's. The food was def fantastic ! So tasty and a wide variety
John is a great and creative chef ans Pauline a very humoristic and lovely host. We have had a lot of fun and felt imm at home. Rooms very clean ans nicely decorated. Coffee, tea to make yourself, with lots of biscuits ans bars to nibble on.
The bathroom with the most fluffiest towels we ever felt, had also all the extra's like luxury lotions , shampoo and conditioner , even more to just use. Such a treat.
We felt imm at home and got

July 2023...4 months ago! But it has not been possible to respond more promptly, for which I apologise...and especially as it was so lovely to meet with you, and your intrepid sisters...meeting the challenge of walking "the wall" with such good humour and resilience...we applaud you! And we thank you for posting such a warm and positive review...and are so pleased that you felt "at home," and cared for, during your brief stay with us. Chef John sends you his special thanks. It was a real pleasure to meet you....We hope this finds you well and we send all our best wishes. Pauline and John.

Don't let the word "barn" discourage you from staying at this bed and breakfast. The two-story lodging is beautifully decorated and impeccably clean. To give you some idea of how much different this is from an ordinary hotel, the rooms have names, not numbers. The owners, Pauline and John, are very friendly and aim to please. John has decades of experience as a chef and it shows in the presentations and flavors of the food. I highly recommend that you treat yourself to at least one dinner there, in addition to the complementary breakfast. The home is located near Hadrian's Wall, including four miles from the Housesteads site. As a bonus for a dog lover, there are two dogs who live there (although they are not allowed in the dining room).

From a seasoned traveller, with a wealth of experience, this is such a lovely review. Many thanks for your kind, detailed and generous recommendations. Your overview is much welcomed, and in particular your appreciation of chef John's creativity - as you found his food delights the eye and is a pleasure to eat. It was lovely to meet you - we are so glad you enjoyed your brief stay with us, and hope that Reykjavik proved to be equally pleasurable. Our best wishes to you both. Pauline and John.

I booked Henshaw Barn for my Mum's 70th birthday treat. John and Pauline are wonderful hosts, and the rooms are extremely lovely and comfortable. Everything is delivered to a very high standard, and Pauline has thought of everything with her amazing attention to detail. John's food is something very special and we were very spoilt and really enjoyed ourselves. What a gem!

Almost a month down the line! This is a very belated response to such a favourable, super positive review. Many, many apologies.... But it was very lovely to meet you, and to learn that we had been recommended by former guests. And our thanks to all of you for being such great company - and for your most appreciative and generous comments - we are simply delighted not to disappoint, and very happy to find how much you enjoyed your stay. It was a great pleasure to share our home with you. Our very best wishes, Pauline and John

Having enjoyed holidays at many superb Bed & Breakfast establishments over the years, I have to say Henshaw Barn is, without a doubt, the best I have experienced.

Primarily, Pauline and John are the most generous and hospitable hosts – Pauline’s gentle kindness being the perfect foil to John’s dry and wicked sense of humour. Put simply, they are great company.

Next, John, a (retired) professional chef, turns out stunning dinners – imaginative, beautifully presented and, of course, delicious. Good wine and pre-dinner drinks are available on request – my G&Ts were superb! Breakfast is generous with a very wide choice and, again, presented to a standard which would put quality hotels and restaurants to shame.

Finally, our bedroom, although not spacious, was warm and supremely comfortable. A cosy resident’s lounge is also available for reading and watching television.

Apparently, we were Pauline and John’s first guests of the season and in the midst of very stormy weather (February), we were so glad to return to the cosy warmth of Henshaw Barn for coffee and biscuits.

We certainly will be returning and hope Pauline and John continue to thrive!

Oh my goodness - what a cracking review at the start of the new season... extraordinarily detailed, and overflowing with positives. Hard to imagine a better! And to receive such high praise from an exceptionally well travelled couple is something to treasure, and is hugely, hugely appreciated. Many, many thanks. And we must also reciprocate, as it was a pleasure and a privilege to share our home with you, with effortless, engaging conversations the order of the day - and a particular highlight of your stay. We send you our warmest wishes...and as you "certainly will be returning" we very much look forward to again welcoming you to Henshaw Barn Pauline and John.

We stayed two nights DBB and have never in many decades been so well treated. Gentle concern for our welfare, professional cuisine of a remarkable high standard, delightful bedroom with our own sitting room and en-suite bathroom, private dining with generous and perfectly prepared food. Pauline and John felt like intimate friends from first sight. Mere money seemed a poor exchange for such facilities, kindness and attention; in London you might easily pay six to ten times the price for such attention, and still not achieve the warmth you will enjoy here.

Following your stay many, many thanks for posting such a wonderful review - we are quite overwhelmed! And hugely pleased! But from your initial contact the omens were good - our email exchange was both pleasant and positive - augmented on finally meeting. And it was such a great, and memorable pleasure to meet you both, whilst the opportunity to share time with passionate plant and garden enthusiasts was an additional bonus. We very much appreciate your kind and words and supportive comments, and very much hope that you may be able to make time for that return visit. Our warmest wishes, Pauline and John.
