Penhein is an award winning family-run farm and glampsite set in 400 acres of rural south Wales. Home to eight Persian alachigh tents, a luxurious shower block, communal tent and a shared kitchen, Penhein Glamping is tucked away in a coppiced wood, surrounded by wildflower meadows and sweeping views of the Monmouthshire hills. The tents at Penhein - huge and round with a high, domed ceiling, custom-built locally for glamping - are beautifully decorated and kitted out with everything you need for a luxurious camping experience. Comfy beds sleeping up to five adults and draped in colourful blankets are banked by rustic bedside tables made from wooden pallets. A wood-burning stove keeps the tent cosy and warm and doubles up as a hotplate for cooking food prepared in the adjacent kitchen area or on the fire pit outside each tent. There’s running water, cupboards ready-stocked with kitchen essentials, and a table and chairs for eating dinner by candlelight under canvas. Each tent has a private en suite flushing loo and its own dedicated shower either just outside the tent door or in the glorious showerblock, with its underfloor heating and monsoon showers. The campsite can be booked exclusively, and there’s plenty to keep big groups entertained onsite and further afield. Guests can escape to nature straight, with miles of nature trails to explore, lots of local attractions to discover, and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. After a day of adventuring and a pint in a nearby pub, guests return home to Penhein to relax in the Victorian style roll-top bath or freshen up with a hot shower, get the barbecue going on the fire pit, play cards and board games in the communal tent, before cosying in at night surrounded by the sounds of nature.

We were two families with 5 children aged 9, 9, 7, 6 and 5 and everyone had a blast. The tents were very well equipped and extremely comfortable. We ordered a Tesco delivery for food which was ideal and we made the most of the outdoor cooking, utilising the large communal fire pits. The outdoor covered eating area was brilliant as the Welsh weather delivered many torrential downpours. This didn't however dampen anyone's fun, but added to the adventure. We did family bushcraft which the dads enjoyed just as much (if not more) than the children. We also used Monmouth Canoe for a family canoe trip down the Wye. The 5 mile route was ideal for the children's ages and they all said it was their weekend highlight. We will definitely be back and probably in a larger group!

Absolutely wonderful experience at Penhein!! We booked for a hen party and birthday and couldn’t have wished for a better place to celebrate our friend. Helen and Teresa were so helpful for months in advance of our booking, they provided all the info we needed to plan a really fun and successful weekend. They were on hand during our stay, and helped with any questions we had. They also included a gift basket for our birthday hen, which was a lovely touch! The tents were immaculate, clean and beautiful. They are somewhat rustic, but that was all part of the charm. The facilities are great, and the team have really thought of everything. We made good use of the communal tent (Petro) and the wild flower meadow, in addition to the cheats kitchen. We also did the treasure hunt that Penhein offer which was fun and tested our map reading skills! Penhein have a recommended list of suppliers, we used The Hogfather catering company and they were again fantastic. The cost was super reasonable, and on the cheaper side of the sites we researched, which made value for money fantastic for our group. Our weekend was a hot one, which meant the tents were boiling during the day, but they really cool off in the evening/nighttime, and we all slept fantastically! Some tips to make your stay great- - We had one of the small super powerful torches with us which made night time in the tent a lot easier. Candlelight and lamps are great but this was something we were glad to have brought! - Bring power packs as this was easier than using the communal areas for phone charging. Thank you Helen we had an amazing time and will definitely be back!

We had 4 nights at Penhein with our 2 children aged 5 and 2. Despite the weather being pretty unpredictable, we had the most wonderful time and I cannot recommend it more highly. The tents are beautifully decorated - a lovely mix between feeling that you are camping (no electricity, only candles at night) but with enough luxury to make the experience feel more akin to a hotel. In particular running water, a well stocked wood basket, comfortable beds with beautiful covers and fresh flowers on the kitchen table. It meant that the wet nights (2 out of the 4) didn’t matter because it was so lovely and cosy being inside the tent and cooking on the wood burner (which also kept everyone very warm). The setting is beautiful and there is so much to do around there - with children or as a couple. The owner Helen could not be kinder or more welcoming and a particular highlight of our stay was meeting her and helping to feed the little lambs that had just been born. We will definitely be back!

Another amazing few days at Penhein. Off grid life. Lambing. Playing in the fields. Cooking on open fires (with a few visits to the Cheat’s Kitchen!). Helen had an amazing set up here. Peace and tranquility. Our little slice of heaven. Fab for families, couples or even solo!

We have just returned from a mid week stay at Penhein Glamping. We were wowed as soon as we arrived with the location and the keen eye to detail walking through the woodland glampsite. We stayed in The Coombe glamping tent which was set back with easy access to the fields, shower block and cheats kitchen. We took our 18 month old son who loved the wheelbarrows, play area, playing fields, tree swing ropes and the campfire!! The glamping facilities and cleanliness were also a 10/10. It was truly a great family getaway and would recommend to everyone!

We had a family get together at Penhein at the end of June and it was one of the best weekends we have ever had! The site itself is gorgeous, beautiful views across the Severn estuary, the pods are set amongst beautiful woodland so you have real privacy and quiet when you want it, but you are near to the communal areas, pantry, etc. There is plenty for the kids to explore on site, and as its safe and secluded they could run around on their own. Both newborns to older kids were catered for. The pods themselves are incredibly comfortable. They have been furnished to a very high standard with everything you could need, even a very large (and effective!) cool box to store food. Some of group even said 'luxury beyond anything they've seen before'! The owner even has ice packs on site that you can use. Everything has been thought through with care and attention, and it really allowed us to have a quiet, relaxing, nature-full weekend. Even when we got caught out with some heavy rain showers to pods kept us cozy and warm. The owner of the site and her staff couldn't help us enough as well, and they were on hand to help with any query we had over the weekend. We will 100% be staying again!

We had booked to stay at the site with friends for a relaxing weekend. It cost £375/night for hard beds with dirty socks under one and mugs with sticky rims that hadn’t been cleaned. The wood was damp so we couldn’t build a fire and the electric points were far away. Definitely will not be visiting again or recommending. We actually left a night early because there was a huge gaping hole in the side of the tent. The most overpriced place - absolutely not worth it.

Responded 27 Jun 2022
Dear Le We are so sorry to read your review, and to hear that you were so disappointed with your stay. I very much wish you had contacted us when you were here so we could have responded to your concerns straight away. For example, I would have been delighted to help you light your fire and show you how to keep it going etc. As to the electricity, not having it in our tents is one of the reasons many of our guests pick Penhein, to experience the magic of candlelight at night-time and also take advantage of the opportunity for a digital detox. However, for those who need electricity (for charging devices etc) we do have electric points in the Cheat’s Kitchen, Shower Block, Petro and Chehal Sotoun (the 2 communal spaces). I am sorry that you felt these options were too far from your tent. I was also very concerned to hear about the socks and mug – normally our guests comment on how spotless the tents are, and cleanliness is something I, and all of the team here at Penhein, consider to be not only a priority but one of our greatest strengths. We are very disappointed that we fell so short in this instance. Finally, I have carried out a detailed inspection of all of the tents and I was not able to find a hole in any of them. I would be so grateful if you could confirm which tent you were in so we can identify this issue. Please accept our deepest apologies that your stay fell so short of expectation, it is something we take incredibly seriously, and we are very upset that you felt your stay was below standard. We will definitely be using your review to make sure your problems don’t happen again. With our best wishes. Helen

We booked literally the morning of our first night! We were not disappointed! The tents are beautiful and well equipped! We were very comfortable! The shower block was 5 star! We loved the little extra touches like the local produce pantry etc. My daughters made lots of friends during our stay. They were able to run around happily and safely around the site! Would love to return with friends and family in the future!

When we decided to go glamping with a young baby we had a few items on out wish list of the perfect place to stay. When browsing all the different types Penhein caught our eye and it didn't disappoint. When we arrived a lovely member of staff met us and gave us a quick tour, showing us which shower was ours, cheats kitchen and finally to out yurt. She explained we could use the fridges in chests kitchen for the baby milk or any other items that we did not want to use the cool box in our yurt for. She also checked we knew how to light thr fire and had everything we need for the baby and our older son to be comfortable. The accommodation is beautiful, it has everything you need for your stay all you have yo do is turn up with clothes and snacks. The beds where super comfortable and we got fantastic nights sleep. The lack of electricity was no issue as plenty of other light sources are included tealights, solar lights and tilly lamps. The star lamps above the bed illuminated the yurt in a magical way. When the stove was on the yurt was toasty warm. The only little niggle we had was the lack of curtains, one of those being the window opposite the bed. We ended up coming up with a solution to give us more privacy and after speaking to a member of staff it's my understanding that curtains are in order to solve this issue. Site facilities are excellent cheats kitchen was good for making a quick cuppa and bottles. The community yurt was great for playing games and meeting others staying on the site. The meadow was beautiful and gave plenty of room to run around in. My son really really enjoyed the park and it was a great place for children to make new friends. We really enjoyed using the campfire and we got to see some amazing stars due to the low light pollution. For us this place was great for getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and ditching technology for abit whilst still being comfortable. This place definitely delivered. Our autistic son struggles with new places at time but he absolutely loved it her and some of that was down to how well the staff interacted with him, so huge thank you for that. It was also perfect for taking a young baby. We look forward to planning another visit here in the near future.
