The outside of the building belies the warm welcome and service provided by this hotel. We only stayed 1 night but had 3 rooms to accommodate my family. We were all put together ( first time that’s happened!) the rooms whilst a. It dated were spotlessly clean and had everything we needed including plenty of tea and coffee. The staff were all lovely, and very helpful. One of my sons was sitting an online exam whilst we were here. Late checkout was no problem and the housekeeping staff were aware and very considerate when cleaning the nearby rooms keeping noise to a minimum.

Dinner was very reasonably priced and well worth it, breakfast was also very good. Good selection and arrived piping hot.

Would definitely recommend

My wife and I spent 4 nights here during our visit to the Shetlands. The Brae is situated in the middle of the Mainland island in the small village of Brae and is conveniently located to most of the many sites this island has to offer. It is a two story hotel with no elevator/lift so I booked a room on the ground floor. We arrived early, about 9:30 after arriving on the early morning ferry from Aberdeen and the front desk attendant got us into our room immediately…munch appreciated.

The hotel is quiet and nicely decorated but is not particularly exceptional. The room was a little small but comfortable with a view out a small window at the picturesque inlet that lies next to the village. The room has the basic amenities you expect in a motel style hotel.

The main selling point for the Brae is its restaurant and to a lesser extent bar. My wife and I believe what truly made the Brae a fantastic stay were the two gentlemen who seem to do everything associated withe the restaurant and bar. They greet and sit you, serve, cook, act as bar tenders and I believe cook. They probably clean up and do the dishes. And they do this with while delivering their customer service with a smile. .Because of them and pleasant experience and good food we ate every breakfast and dinner at the hotel….something we do not normally do. Curtis and Scott are we believe the heart and soul of the Brae…at least as we experienced it. On the subject of meals the fish and chips restaurant across the street is a decent lunch option, sans alcoholic drinks.

I would recommend that the hotel find a way to open the bar an hour or two before the restaurant opens at 6:00.

I highly recommend the Brae, particularly if Scott and Curtis are there.

We were relieved that the owner was able to be flexible when we had to cut our booking from three nights to one, due to Covid. The hotel was not at all what I expected; a purpose-built modern building, with wide corridors that were good for suitcases, but flights of stairs and no ramps, which weren’t.

Reception was friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant coped very well with a sudden influx of about eight tables of guests all dining together. The menu was limited but none the worse for that, and my husband was very impressed with the local skate. I had Nutella ice cream for dessert, which was chewy and nougat-y, and came in a brandy snap basket.

Our room was spacious and very clean. However: It’s a very long time since I attempted to sleep in such a small double bed; it just wasn’t big enough for two full-sized adults to sleep comfortably. Does the hotel have any rooms with larger beds?

Breakfast provided the usual range of ‘Scottish’ fare, plus cereals and yoghurts; fresh fruit was represented by oranges and apples. The service was brisk and friendly.

This property is very much in the style of American motels or hotels you might encounter in Iceland: no-nonsense and lacking bells and whistles but clean and perfectly adequate for a few nights. Much more and you might find yourself irritated by the lack of somewhere to dry your towels, the bathroom door lock that was seized up many years ago so you cant shut the door and a breakfast which, although relatively diverse in cooked options, looks like it might have come from an army canteen.

If Brae is a location you need to be in, you won't suffer for staying in the Brae hotel, not least because the fantastic Frankie's Fish & Chip shop is just across the road.

This is a reasonable priced hotel. It’s quite basic but clean . We had an evening meal which was very nice and two breakfasts which were excellent. The staff are so helpful. The guy on the desk had lots of tips. The serving lady gave us an iron and board plus serving the restaurant mostly by herself and the temporary chap was great and very cheerful. If you need to be in the area I can recommend this place.

The Brae Hotel is a great base to stay for a few days to explore the islands. Rooms in the 3 star hotel are clean and comfortable with all that is needed for a stay. The standout feature of the hotel is the staff. David at reception shared his wealth of local knowledge with the best places to visit. Meals at the restaurant offered multiple choices, were well cooked and servings were generous. Scott and Curtis are an excellent team, with their cheerfulness, efficiency and attention to detail to be commended. It was a great start to the day to have breakfast served with them singing as they worked.

Although usually full to non residents we were able to get a meal. The quality of the food was outstanding, the best we have had for many a time and much, much better than the more expensive meals we had at a well known more northerly hotel! I had a mussels in a delicate sauce to start, followed by catfish with wilted veg. A brave choice but one that repaid my courage! Outstanding! The chef definitely knows his job and should be on masterchef. My husband was similarly pleased with his meal. The bill for two came to £45 including pud for him, a pint of beer and a large wine. I dont see how they can maintain these prices but hopefully the chef will stay for a long time.

The Brae Hotel makes an excellent base for touring Shetland. It is centrally situated and, whilst the rooms are simple and functional, they have everything you need. The food in the restaurant is great - the menu is small but it changes each night (always a good sign) and everything I tried during the week I was there was delicious. The restaurant is also very good value. The best thing about this hotel, however, is the staff who are, without exception, cheery, helpful and enthusiastic. A special mention to Scott and Curtis in the dining room: they are a great team who have a fantastic rapport with customers and go above and beyond to ensure everyone has an enjoyable stay.
