Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a little gem this pub is! Set in the heart of Harrington village (which is quaint and peaceful) it has the perfect location. After a long walk along the River Dove we retraced our steps back to here and had some delicious food! I had a hot sandwich of turkey, stuffing and cranberry served with a tasty salad and vegetable crisps! For £1.50 extra I added a cup of tasty homemade cauliflower soup! Friends had the fish and chips and the homemade pie. All superb! The service was second to none and the staff were kind, attentive and friendly.

We regularly visit The Devonshire Arms in Hartington and I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. The pub itself is cosy with a warm atmosphere greeting you as soon as you walk through the door. As well as the wide range of drinks available at the bar, the food menu offers something for all whether it’s a hot meal or a light snack. The food is always delicious and the staff can never do enough to help, being both polite and accommodating. Well worth a visit for anyone paying a visit to the beautiful village of Hartington, there’s always a fire roaring on a cold day to help you thaw out from a walk, and a beautiful beer garden should you want to sit outside on warmer days. The perfect pub.

We called in for lunch but hadn't booked. All the tables were reserved, but apparently for the evening, so don't be put off if you enter and see that. It's worth waiting for a member of staff who has to serve two bars so may not be immediately available.

Good choice of meals. I had the steak and ale pie with chips and peas and extra gravy and my partner had the Jolly Hog sausages. We didn't wait long and the food was good.

There is outdoor seating as well as indoor but it is quite small, so in summer it would be better to book. It's dog friendly and provides dog treats and water.

Visited today for a very unpleasant lunch after a lovely walk. Ordered a cheese ploughman's, 2 soups and 2 wines. The ploughman's was a bowl of houmous, olives, flat bread and I'm not sure what was in the middle. The soup was nice enough but served with a part baked roll you can buy for 70p for a pack of 6 at supermarket would expect a bit more for £7 a bowl. We sent the cheese dish back only to be challenged 4 times about our order. 2 of which were by the manager who sort of just hovered over us looking rather uncomfortable. We had visited about a month ago when management changed hands and there was no gas. When our order came after lengthy wait the bread for our sandwich was mouldy and our wine had been given to someone else. We returned to day to give new management another chance. However we will not be returning. If management is a reflection on standards then I would steer clear.

We booked for a meal with our 2 children as it was our wedding anniversary and we were staying in the village. After a 3 our drive from the Lake District would found the pub was closed due to COVID. No one had contacted us to let us know and this was very frustrating.

We visited the Devonshire Arms last week after a walk of two halves- started off dry and chilly and ended up with blizzard conditions that even the most resistant waterproofs couldn't cope with. Arriving back we all agreed that a cosy pub and a pint of Guinness would be very welcome and found both plus a very warm welcome at this lovely pub. The lady running the whole place singlehandedly, and enabling it to be the only open pub in the village, couldn't have been more welcoming, had the fire on and we soon thawed out and warmed up. Big thanks and we'll be back again soon!

I think everyone who worked at this pub asked us if we were happy and enjoying ourselves at some point in the visit! Just felt so friendly and welcoming. We had my partner's elderly parents with us and we were really looked after. The food was brilliant - especially the veggie option! And generous (But not oversized) portions. Good value all round, we will definitely be back. Thank you 🙂

One very nice lad running round trying to keep up with two bars massive under staffing. Waiting ten minutes to be served very poor. this place will be a disaster when the season kicks in. this outfit needs to keep pace with there customers needs.

We came for 2 nights break from lockdown & Covid. Great spacious room. Great pub and felt very safe with COVID precautions. The staff - especially Stephen - looked after us really well. No free tables in the pub to drink so they let us sit in the restaurant. They were fully booked for food when we arrived but found us a table as we were staying! Fantastic breakfast. We felt regulars after 2 days, thanks to Stephen and the team. Massive beer garden at the back that no one seemed to know about so quiet. Definitely recommend
