Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Really enjoyed our overnight stay. The staff were really friendly. We had an evening meal. Large portion and well cooked. The bed was comfortable so we had a good night's sleep. The village is a good place to tour from. Would definately stay again

Popped in with friends for some food after a walk to Milldale and back. Very welcoming as we entered and we had a lovely table in the restaurant. Food was excellent and quickly served. The vegan pie was tremendous. Beer was excellent too. All reasonably priced. Look forward to returning.

Had a lovely Sunday roast on Easter Sunday evening. Pork was beautifully tender. Service was very friendly at the end of what was clearly a busy day. Understand is under new management. We decided to ignore some of the recent negative reviews and give it a chance - very glad we did.

Just returned following excellent 2 nights which was for 55th wedding anniversary, All staff were extremely good, particularly Jenny who went to great lengths to make sure our stay was memorable. We are most grateful to her. The weather was very cold but we made use of the nearby bus stop with a good service to Buxton and Ashbourne. Will visit again in warmer weather.

Very friendly landlord and landlady, very welcoming. We did not stay at the hotel but we visited the bar for two nights and we was made very welcome. It was very homely with a log burner also a restaurant. Other customers told me they had eaten there and food was really good. The area is just great for wonderful walks and having time out to chill. We loved the gift shop and the cheese shop.

We absolutely loved staying here and really want to stay again in May. The staff are welcoming and enthusiastic about their work. The bar has an excellent selection of real ales and gins and the food is mostly homemade and lovely. We stayed in room 10 and it was cosy . The bed was so comfortable and we both slept soundly. Breakfast was superb and the bacon and sausages are locally sourced. Walks are pretty much on the doorstep so the car can remain in the large pub car park.

First time in Hartington and at Charles Cotton - we couldn’t fault our stay. The hotel has lots of character, perfectly located for a walking break - stunning scenery and walking routes close by. If you overlook that the accommodation is maybe in need of a little TLC - you’ll find a hotel with a warm welcome, staff could not have been anymore accommodating, food was good. We had a lovely weekend and met some great characters along the way. We shall be back again. Thank you

We had this overnight stay booked as a gift. We arrived late for check in -our own doing. We then got told last orders for food were 19:30. We managed to order food. The starter of sweet potato fries were lovely, although it came with sweet chilli sauce and cream cheese, not sour cream and salsa like the menu stated. My husband ordered lasagne. Which he said was pleasant. I had ordered the steak pie, chips and garden peas. I had one chip and a bite out of the pie and left it. The pie didn’t taste of anything but also left a strange after taste, the chips weren’t remotely cooked, they were still raw! We put this mishap down to the fact we ordered just before the kitchen closed. The waitress was lovely and asked if everything was okay, I politely complained as generally I get embarrassed at complaining! She asked if I would like a pudding so I ordered a sticky toffee with icecream, that arrived and I had pulled the longest hair out! At that point I was passed caring, being 8month pregnant I was very hangry at that point. We got the bill and they had only taken off the pudding, and not the pie which I were quite annoyed at. Arrived back at the room, we were told we didn’t need the key to lock the door when leaving the room, we got back to the room and the hadn't actually locked. The shower was warm, but not powerful at all. Next morning, the breakfast choice was poor and the portion sizes were tiny, no swaps were allowed on the breakfast either which I found disappointing. Overall I wouldn’t really recommend.
