We recently had a fabulous break at Glebe House Cottages. Due to the current Covid restrictions I had a few concerns ahead of making the booking so contacted the venue direct. I spoke to the host, Jay Brewer who was extremely helpful and understanding of my concerns so I made the booking for a four night stay.

The cottages themselves are beautifully laid out with excellent heating and a well equipped kitchen. It was a lovely touch on our arrival to be given a bottle of wine and boxes of treats for our 2 dogs.

The grounds around the cottages are beautifully maintained and the woodland walk is perfect to exercise small dogs. The outdoor heated pool, situated in a walled garden, is also a lovely addition, with that and the site only being a 10 - 15 minutes drive from beaches at Bude and Widemouth it’s a perfect base for a holiday. And for golf enthusiasts, there’s also a golf club only 10 minutes up the road.

Due to Covid restrictions, the cellar bar in the main house was not in use but instead, a marquee had been put up in the grounds with all social distancing measures in place and a fully stocked bar, the selection of gins was second to none! The bar was not open every evening but the hosts were extremely accommodating and if they couldn’t open it or, if you prefer, would serve drinks in your cottage.

All in all an excellent venue. Thank you to Jay and Sarah for looking after us so well, we will be back.

Beautiful outstanding accommodation. Booked out the whole site to accommodate our whole family. This is the place to go if your looking for group accommodation or even if you just a couple or a family it’s like a home from home. 6 cottages a pool a kids playground a tennis court and the most beautiful well kept gardens. The children were occupied with use of the warmest heated pool even when it rained. Just having the pool made such a difference to our holiday. The grown ups spent time playing tennis and relaxing in the courtyards. We were lucky enough to experience every cottage on this site so can highly recommend them all, each one unique. The cottages are well equipped had everything required for self catering, beds were comfortable and clean lovely touches from a bottle of wine on arrival to having the use of bar b q in courtyards we felt so at home. The owners were so lovely, friendly welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed from a round of golf to recommendations of places to visit. They set up an outside bar which we used frequently and enjoyed a well organised quiz night with fish and chips, just brilliant fun. We can not wait to go back all 26 of us, honestly the greatest place I’ve been in the UK what find its very special. Bude 15 minutes away in the car. Do not hesitate to book a cottage here you will be kicking yourself if you don’t.

Everything was lovely. We attended my friends sons wedding which was from Thursday to Saturday . The owner let us get on with doing what we wanted re decorating everywhere. It was all really fantastic. The exclusivity of having the whole place to ourselves was fantastic. The only thing I would say is it would be useful to have more toilets near the marquee and the use of a microphone for ceremony would have been better as I couldn’t hear anything.

Glebe House Cottages markets itself as luxury; while it has positives, it has many areas to work on to be luxury.

The location is very convenient for Bude and the surrounding area, a lot of work has been done on the accommodation. However, to be luxurious one looks at service and facilities.

Despite being promised that the key would be in the lock, it wasn’t. Despite the promise in the guidebook in the cottage, the reception wasnt manned until 8pm. There was mould on curtains, the kitchen, and bathroom sealant, there was cobwebs in every room, the showers leaked constantly, and the under cabinet fridge did not close properly. The curtains and roller blinds were mismatched and cheap, the sofas were uncomfortable, we had to clean the shower before we could use it. The kitchen pans had seen better days, there was no hand soap in the kitchenette, and the freezer needed de-icing. The IKEA mugs and glasses were far too small, and there was no corkscrew in the kitchen. We did email at the start of the stay that we had issues, but never received a reply.

Luxury would be all these at least corrected; plus an in-person greeter to meet you, to open and show the accommodation, someone available at all hours, a welcome basket of local branded products, branded toiletries like Moulton Brown or Baylis Harding, and furnishings that said luxury not bargain basement.

Initially we had a good impression of this place. The cottages were well reviewed and the host was good in communication leading up to our stay. Unfortunately our expectations quickly changed on arrival.

We were not welcomed when we arrived as the host was “expecting us the next day” which meant that after a 5 hour drive we were left walking around the grounds in the dark trying to find a key and eventually found someone in the private residence. Without apology or recognition of their mistake, we were let into a cold and unwelcoming accommodation. For a modern and lovely looking property, this accommodation is surprisingly tired. The en-suite bathroom was smelly with water sitting in the shower and on the screen and the shower tray flooded when first used. Both bathrooms, while with modern fixtures are not well maintained, with mould on the walls, ceilings and in the grout and silicone around the bath/shower and paint peeling off the scuffed walls. Shower itself is nice but shower head needs treating.

Bedrooms are musty smelling and uncomfortable with spring mattresses that poke under the mattress, old and bunched up pillows (hidden under slightly better but old pillows) and curtains shoved up and blue-tacked around the edges. Not a comfortable nights sleep sadly.

Upstairs is a nice smart TV set up ready to go with lots of apps and a fair equipped kitchen. We didn’t receive a welcome hamper/basket usually provided in “luxury” accommodation and mentioned in the welcome book, but some tea, coffee, sugar sachets. The living room is very basic and sparsely furnished. Sofas are worn and uncomfortable with springs poking underneath the seat cushions making this living room an uncomfortable place to try and relax after a heavy day of exploring. Also lots of cobwebs.

The host was off site during our stay meaning that it appeared there was no one on site to help us (on arrival the lady who eventually let us in made it very clear she was not part of the business). Issues about the poor situation on our arrival, lack of welcome, the condition of the bathrooms and flooded shower tray, and stained bed sheets were raised with the host directly by email on our second day and we received no response during our stay.

To round our trip off, on our last night we then received a knock on the door at 7pm during our dinner to be told they “thought we were supposed to leaving this morning”. Needless to say, we couldn’t wait to be up and out on our last day although no one to check out/collect key (don’t know why we were surprised at that point).

Overall I was very disappointed with this accommodation and the hosting of it, and would not come again or recommend to my friends and family. While the property, grounds and location itself are stunning and perfect for Bude and area, this accommodation is not maximised to its potential. It could be a real gem with some love and attention to detail which is the least to be expected from a “luxury accommodation” as it is started to be. Unfortunately, at the moment it is a basic, no frills holiday accommodation.

Such a lovely site, with incredibly friendly, accommodating, genuine owners.
The owners can't do enough for you, are incredibly knowledgeable and treat you as friends.
The cottages are superb, with wonderful little touches, and comfortable furnishings.
The facilities on-site are fantastic - you can really see how party sizes big or small would be well catered for here.

Please pay no attention to the negative reviews, from what I understand, there's been one couple that have cancelled their wedding expecting their non refundable deposit back and now they have got their friends to write bad reviews on here which is so unfair. This is a small family business and the people are LOVELY.

We got married here in August last year and 5 Stars does not do Glebe House justice! I and my new WIFE had the best EVER! If you're considering this venue, you have to go and see it for yourself as the feeling you get when walking around is quite something else, there's something in the atmosphere where you just know something quite special is going to happen here. My friends and family were constantly commenting on how amazing our wedding was, especially the beautiful formal gardens and the whole setting surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Jay and his family are so soooooooo helpful! There was nothing that was too much trouble and he was able to take all the stress away, we could visit as many times as we liked and Jay went through every fine detail of the wedding and thought of so many things we hadn't considered which made the day just flow so easily. Make sure you go to the wine tasting too, it was such great fun!!!

The food supplied was sensational. I could not believe the standard they managed to deliver considering we had 120 guests but each dish looked and tasted incredible. We went for the Deluxe package and all the food for the whole day was included, I recommend the bruschetta canapés and pork belly main dish, but the catering team were so flexible and had food options for all dietary requirements.

We had the cottages for 3 nights, and it all felt like one big holiday for everyone. Jay made us pizzas the night before the wedding and the day after we were able to have our own bbq and a pool party. The swimming pool is sooooo warm!

I can't thank Jay and the whole team enough for a wonderful wedding weekend that we will talk about in years to come.

We visited glebe house cottages last month and it was terrible from start to finish,

The owners didn’t seem to care about the issues we had as when we tried to talk to them about our room we got shut off .

Our room stank of wet dog and really was not clean. Even put sheets had stains on

The swimming pool was dirty and closed for half our visit

We were excepting so much better from the other views we had seen and especially for the price we paid !!

Such a shame and will not be staying again

Response from Jay Brewer, Owner at Glebe House Cottages
Responded 2 Sept 2022
Hi Joff and Julia, Are you sure you've written a review for the right accommodation here? We live on site and really like to get to know our guests and would NEVER shut off a guest if they had any issue, we are very hands on and are always more than happy to help whenever we can. We've also only had to shut the pool for one day this season which was in August (after the date of your review), which seriously makes me think there's something very wrong with this review. I've checked our records and I can't find any details of guests staying with your name, but we would love for you to get in touch with us so we can get to the bottom of this, so please do email me: jay@glebehousecottages.co.uk Kind Regards, Jay

We have just returned from our holiday cottage, Little Barn. A great week. The cottage is set in a lovely complex of 6 other cottages and an old rectory. The grounds are superb and perfectly maintained. The cottage was very well equipped and comfortable. We were a family of 5 and well catered for. The location is perfect for the coast with many lovely coastal areas to explore. Despite the professional Covid measures which safeguarded us, they did not impede our enjoyment. The owners live on site, and Nick and Polly, a lovely couple( their son and daughter in jaw were have a well earned break) were always at hand to help, offer advice and chat about the area, things to do on site, places to visit, and very interesting history of the site. We were made very welcome from the moment we arrived until we sadly had to
Leave. A thoroughly enjoyable holiday. Very many thanks and highly recommended. We will return.

Sarah and Jay were so welcoming and friendly. Their cottages are beautiful and have everything we needed for the week. Facilities on site are great, we particularly enjoyed the heated pool and bar that they opened for us even though we were one of the only families staying at the time. Excellent location and we had a brilliant time visiting. All covid rules and guidelines were followed. Thank you very much!
