Why is it every time we visit Oban, there's a violent storm? We'd booked for two nights but on our day of travel Mathew phoned to advise all the roads were either flooded or blocked with landslips. We agreed to try travelling the following day, which we did - it was eventful and with many detours but got there. Mathew kept in touch throughout to check our progress too, giving us updates on road closures. When we arrived, we were greeted at the door and shown our room, which was huge and very well appointed. We asked for dinner each night and I must say, the food was of the highest standard ( and I've been to a lot of top tier hotels in my day). Mathew had also arranged at my request for prosecco, flowers and chocolates to be in our room to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Dinner was preceded with a complimentary glass of sherry and coffee was in the comfortable and well furnished drawing room. We sat at the large dining table with other guests for both dinner and breakfast, so it was great that we got to meet new people throughout our stay, all of whom were lovely and also intrepid travelers. All in all, Melfort House is a top notch hotel / B&B and definitely a cut above the rest, with fantastic hospitality, awesome food and yet quiet enough to relax in traditional comfort. Thank you !

Surprises come in many forms. When visiting Melfort, it comes on a plate and in the local pub. Mathew has been providing magic moments in this tucked away beauty for nearly 20 years. Clean. Classically appointed and comfortable. Hard to believe the history of the land ( ask him to give you the history on making gun powder on the area) as it is beautiful. But the magic comes from his skills in the kitchen at a very fair price for dinner. Excellent quality, thought, and execution for half of what you would pay at a high end restaurant. Self taught, he has a sharp knife and set of culinary skills. But, that is not even the best part. Tuesday nights are music nights at the local Inn/ pub with an occasional Friday night at another nearby hotel. DO NOT MISS the musical journey thru Scotland. Home grown, beautiful tradition and a warm welcome by friendly Scott’s. Mathew has is great on the mandolin and guitar with a great vocal on the occasional ballad. A great group of friends who just want to play! Really, a highlight of our Scottish nights on our touring. Great to be out of Oban ( 20-30 minutes) and in the beautiful hills in a classic estate home with classic Scottish tunes. Magic.

A country house hotel in highland Argyll with 3 rooms, where you can sit in the lounge or sit at table and make conversation with some new friends. Matthew is a fine, hospitable host, and a remarkably good chef, that's been his profession for many years. Lots of manicured and wild grounds to wander through, don't forget the giant Monkey Puzzle tree. Lots of beautiful countryside to explore or pop down to Craobh Haven and go for a dolphin, eagle watching, wild-swim trip on the local boat, the Farsain [details available in the House]. An excellent stay.

This wonderful facility is the home of the owner, Matthew. Driving to the house from the road sets the tone for the entire experience: tranquil and serene. Sheep graze in the meadow adjacent to a house that is surrounded by large, beautiful trees. The main living room is filled with family photographs and memorabilia that give one the sense of spending evenings with an old friend. The breakfast, prepared to order, is very nice. Matthew is a superlative chef and we highly recommend that you enjoy at least one meal he prepares; it will add immeasurably to your experience of this unique place. Highly recommended.

We only spent one night here before leaving for the ferry, but will definitely be back. The house is beautiful in a perfect location. Our room was very comfortable and our meal in the evening was of a very high standard. Just an excellent experience-a total delight. Thank you Matthew.

Wonderful setting. Grounds lovely with lots of walks. The unit was immaculate and a quirky layout that suited us perfectly. One of the most significant historical sites in Britain is just a few miles away, standing stones, burial mounds etc. Oban is also just a few miles away.

Thanks Matthew for another terrific few days. Weather was below par but as before the house and garden, the wonderful cooking and the relaxed atmosphere more than made up for it. Thanks for allowing the girls to visit, hope they didn’t leave paw prints!

We stayed for 2 nights in the Hill Room and dined there on our second night. Matthew was a wonderful host and an amazingly talented chef! Both dinner and breakfast were to the standard of a Michelin starred restaurant! There is a lovely drawing room to enjoy and complementary afternoon tea & baked treats served between 4-5pm. As it is unlicensed, you can bring your own wine, which Matthew will serve to you. Little touches like the offer of a nice Sherry pre-dinner were appreciated. Just perfect all round. Would definitely stay here again if in the area & would highly recommend.
