Myself, my husband, two sons (12 and 8yrs) and dog had a three night break last week.
We have been several times before, so didn’t know what changes we would notice in the wake of COVID-19.
To be honest the answer is, not much. Yes there are hand sanitising stations throughout, a Perspex screen at reception, the serving staff wear masks and everything is table service. But nothing impacted our stay.
The necessary precautions have been implemented and are being observed, but they don’t detract from anything.
It was lovely to get a break in a familiar place, that wasn’t home, and feel welcomed and safe.

20yr anniversary romantic get away, booked a suite, and while it may be a little loved and worn, it was cosy and romantic with a 4 poster bed and gorgeous en suite complete with roll top bath. Staff were exceptional from booking to arriving to service. We can be hard to please (with our families in the hotel business) so couldn't have been more pleased that every staff member we talked to had the gold standard balance of friendliness and professionalism. No ask was any trouble and catered for with efficiency. We opted for room service which was delivered quickly, all the trimmings and attention you'd expect in the restaurant. The menu seems limited (perhaps posh pub grub level) but the quality was superb. We had steak pie (which with great difficulty I had to concede was better than mine, I may need to ask for the recipe) and chicken burger. Chicken was a butterflied fillet (no whiff of a deep fat fryer) and the al dente vegetables were well seasoned and gorgeously fresh. For us, quality food and service turned what we thought would be a good value night away into a memorable happy experience. Thank you to all the team, we will be back!

Thank you for your wonderful review. I am glad you had such a wonderful time and enjoyed your 20th anniversary. I will pass your kind comments to the staff and speak with the chef about the recipe but I am scared he may say it is a secret recipe :) I hope you can make a return visit in the future and we look forward to welcoming you back.

This was a quick stop on our way further north to enable us to refuel, refresh and watch the final of the Euros. Pre-arrival was very stressful thanks to a plethora of emails from Booking.com and the hotel itself. I spent hours trying to download the hotel app so I could check in, order food etc only for it to fail and for me to discover on arrival that the hotel were changing WiFi providers and none was available anyway! We were travelling with our son and his wife and our grandson. Both rooms were fine, especially our son's where a large bath was positioned in front of a window with a great view of the railway station. Unfortunately the television in their room did not work properly so it was fortunate that everyone could decamp to our room to see the football. The food was very acceptable with staff working hard under the limitations caused by the pandemic I guess.

Hi,
We stayed at the Boat Inn last weekend Friday 25th June to Sun 27th June originally suppose to stay till Mon 28th June.

Here is feedback from our stay.
Our room was the wrong room I phoned and asked to get a garden room and got told reception would phone back to confirm our room was a garden room which reception did. Our room we had was ok but very warm as beside biomass unit and kitchen.
The much vaunted app which you kept going on about that we had use. First night we arrive not working because internet down, staff panicking because they had to use pen and paper plus i had to go through to the bar to get somebody to come and take our drinks order, staff lacked training and leadership.
Food on first night was a bit hit and miss, i had steak pie which was good but veg were like bullets, my wife had cheese cake but could not eat it as it was so poor.
Sat we decided to sit outside and order our drinks used app but the app had decided that I had order some food as well. So got that sorted then, ordered food on app then got told app not working again staff running about not really knowing what they are doing, plus a number of people walked out as waited so long to get served, We had order food outside but got told not doing food anymore outside as too busy inside, spoke to manager who got our food outside, young waitress who brought our food moaning because they were so busy I don't care if they are busy just do there job. Again staff lacked training and leadership.
Food on Sat night was excellent we both had burgers and both were very good.
Both breakfast we had were good and staff were very efficient could tell they were experienced.
We decided to leave on the Sunday morning after breakfast as could not stand another day of Fawlty Towers in the evening but what summed it up was reception never asked why we were leaving a day early.

Hotel is in brilliant location and tell money is being spent on it to do up the rooms and communal areas, you are relying too much on the app to make up for lack of staff and staff inexperience when you would be better getting the staff out there with pen and paper interacting with customers which in turn bring you in more custom.
i know there is a lack of staff in hospitality but my impression is the staff like the app as it means they do less work and less thinking, plus it seems as the younger staff a running the show the way they want rather than the managers telling them what to get done. Almost as thou the tail wagging the dog rather than the dog wagging the tail.

I am sorry feedback is very negative but just being brutally honest.

Cheers Keith

Stayed at the Boat from 13/09 till 16/09, we were given room 109., supposedly a classic double. This is a room, with a view of overlooking huge bins and a massive green container. To compound this the room is surrounded by extraction units, these start at around 06.15 and go on till the kitchen closes around 22.00. In addition, you have staff chatting and using the bins below the window. So you get absolutely no peace in this room. The room is small and stuffy so opening the window is a must which led to biting insects in the room.

I did speak to the hotel management about swapping rooms but we’re told that they could only move us for one night and then we’d need to go back to it the following day as they were full. So basically we were stuck with it. The offer we took cost us £345 which was supposed to save us 20%, if the real cost of our stay was £414, the hotel is delusional as to its worth.

Other smaller things annoyed like a badly set up bathroom (lack of shelving) our toilet bags had to go on the floor, no drinks on arrival as per the booking agreement, no coffee (only decaffeinated), etc.

We ate once in the hotel bar (the restaurant appears not the be used) and at best this was average, breakfast was not consistent, think it depends on who’s might be cooking. Overall a poor experience and one I would not repeat.

I would hope that the management of the hotel read this but don’t expect they will reply to me, they were given the chance to make improvements at the time and did not so platitudes now are worthless.

We checked into the Boat and stayed in Garden room 6.
The room was very tired and desperately in need of a refurb. The bathroom was verging on dirty with the floor tiles broken, grouting black and the rubber seal coming off the shower screen. On the other hand the toiletries supplied were very nice indeed.
The cooking was good - I had sea bass and very moist and tasty chicken on the second night- and the waiting staff worked very hard indeed. They were overwhelmed on the second night and we were shown into an overflow dinner space which was set up for breakfast, even though we had booked a table in advance. Dinner amidst the Rice Krispies was not ideal so we asked to move and luckily there was a table came vacant in the main restaurant.
Breakfast was served by very helpful and hard working staff. The fruit salad was poor and the toast was the cheapest of bread fed through a toaster that didn’t work so the toast largely remained as bread.
On checking out, the receptionist was not unpleasant but didn’t ask if we enjoyed our stay or ask if we were heading home or make any small talk at all. That was symptomatic of the stay. The hotel lacked leadership/ management from reception to the restaurant to housekeeping ( our room wasn’t touched from one day to the next including mugs from the tea/coffee were not washed and the bed wasn’t made).
Value for money was poor and overall I would not return nor recommend this hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to review our property. I take on board your comments about the room and will pass this through to the general managers. After moving to room 101 I am glad you found this more suitable. I do agree the toiletries are lovely. I will pass your comments to the chefs that you enjoyed your evening meal and happy to hear you got a table more suited to your needs. Again, I take on board your comments about the breakfast and will speak with the relevant manager. Although the receptionist helped you throughout your stay and was aware of the issues, I will speak with the team to ensure check-out is also a pleasurable experience. I will also address the fact that should have been told there wouldn't be a service in the room unless requested due to the coronavirus as we are trying to minimize the number of people in the rooms.

We were really disappointed with the hotel sadly and wouldn’t return. There are too many things that could be easily made better and improve the hotel.

Pros:

Room itself was nice. The four poster bed (if you ignore the black tape holding part of it together) and the bathroom was really nice. The room was clean and had a really nice view too.

The staff were all polite and friendly.

Cons:

Their phone app worked up until the day I arrived, so I couldn’t use it to book in or do anything else. I showed a member of staff then when we arrived.

The room had no black out curtains, so I woke up around 5.45am to a bright room and couldn’t get back to sleep.

We were led to believe there was a bar. When we went into what be believed to be the bar area, we were then ushered into what was referred to as “the lounge”. The lounge was basically the reception waiting area with four tables and a few seats. As it was a silent room, you could hear every conversation with the other guests and they could hear you, so everyone tried to speak quietly.

The service was polite and friendly, but bad. We ordered drinks sitting at a table and were told that the previous person sitting there had not settled their bill, so the staff member put or order down to the next table number, so we wouldn’t be billed for this, but they never communicated this, so every other staff member would bring thing through our drinks and constantly go to the other table.

Every time we were served, it was with a different member of staff who would ask “Are you staying at the hotel?” then “What is your room number?” We were asked this five time in the space of two hours, and as we’re sitting in a small silent room, you don’t want to tell people your room number when all the other people there can hear you.

At breakfast we were the only two people left so it wasn’t busy. We ordered two veggie breakfasts with a couple of modifications. These were all ignored and both breakfast were wrong and had to be changed.

The breakfast itself was poor. The potato scone was the size of a tortilla chip, the veggie sausage was this cheap mash thing, which is poor considering there are excellent meat alternative sausages and there was no veggie haggis served as per the menu. We had also hoped for fresh morning coffee but were give a sachet of Nescafé like you get in the room.

There were just two many mistakes and disappointments that I struggle to see how the hotel has been classed as four star?

Despite covid conditions, we felt very safe and welcome at the Boat Inn. All is perfectly organised to keep all precautionary measures (distiancing, hygiene etc), and we loved the room with a view on the hills. Relly good dinner too, compliments to the cuisine.

We have just returned from another good stay at The Boat.

Our double room was fine, clean and nicely decorated, tea and coffee facilities with amazing shortbread.

Bathroom a good size, it looked like it would be a good shower but had hardly any power, the water came out in a trickle and was only warm – even leaving it on for a while it never really got HOT.

Dinner is taken in the bar area, which is quite spacious, nice atmosphere and it was excellent value and portion sizes LARGE – beware if having 2 or 3 courses.

Breakfast is served through in the back restaurant, you help yourself to fruit juice, cereal, fresh fruit etc, and then order your hot cooked selection, which is then cooked to order. It was OK – but nothing special.

The reception area/ entrance hall has been extended since our last visit and tastefully decorated with lovely log fires.

All staff we encountered were pleasant, friendly and helpful.

Watch out for the many deals they offer, either direct with themselves or on itison/5pm etc, as the deals are fantastic value for money.

I sent my complaint directly to the hotel management on 2 occasions, to give them an opportunity to respond before I completed my online reviews. I followed up my complaint with a call and was informed the general manager had received my emails and they would also inform the GM that I had called. Still no response.

On the strength of the website description we decided to book a Deluxe Room.
These rooms are described as spacious, with a walk in shower, and can accommodate 2 children.
Our so called Deluxe room was small, the furniture, carpet and window frames were shabby and no way could the room accommodate beds for 2 children as suggested in the description. This room was nothing like the photographs showing a spacious room with a 4 poster bed!

The en suite did not contain a walk in shower, as stated, but instead an over bath shower. Using the shower caused the windows to steam up but we were unable to leave the window overlooking the outside bar open due to the noise outside.

After we saw our room we did speak to the receptionist and she said she'd speak to her manager re the online description of the Deluxe Rooms. No further action has ensued.

Garden room view is good - large ish lawn and you can see hills in the background. Only problem with these rooms is that they have large patio doors but no window - so if you like a window open for fresh air at night, your are stuck as you can't really risk leaving the door open. No idea on the train, sorry.
