Arriving at Chapter 2 I was shown to my room for the evening by the friendly staff at the bar. We had booked a double superior for one night and I have to say I was a little disappointed once I got in there.
The room was very well stocked with tea and coffee and even some bottled water which I found nice and refreshing. However I did have a problem with the heating while I was there, at first I couldn’t get it to turn on and the owner who came to look at it did provide me with a portable heater. Unfortunately the heating did come on later in the evening so I could turn off the portable but I was still unable to control the temperature of the radiator. I feel I also have to mention the standard of cleanliness in the room as there were a lot of cobwebs and the carpet was stating to look a little shabby round the edges.

Chapter 2 does have a great location, is well stocked with tea and coffee and with friendly helpful staff but could use a little more attention to detail when it comes to cleaning. I appreciate things break down from time to time and the owner did respond very quickly when I brought the heating issue to their attention so Thank you.

The room is quirky and the bed comfortable. The low score is because there is no light in the windowless bathroom. It was reported to reception immediately but nothing was done about it. I paid £90 for a superior, en-suite room - I expect not to have to use the torch on my phone to take a pee or have a shower! How simple it would have been to get a 5 star rating- a £3 light bulb!

This is a very popular town centre bar with small rooms (no breakfast). They have done well with limited resources. Bed comfortable, good shower, room clean. Staff friendly and helpful. Rooms overlook the courtyard where people drink and eat (pizzas etc) but goes quiet after 9.30.
But room small (no wardrobe or chest of drawers). Mould on bathroom ceiling and round shower.
The big problem is a bright green security light which cannot be turned off. Owners told previous complainants that it was a health and safety requirement, but we found it difficult to sleep. Previous guests had evidently tried to cover the light with cardboard. Unless you like sleeping with good sleep masks, or want to risk finding a way to cover the light we would not recommend.

Tried booking a room this morning over the phone- was told ‘Love can you go and check Booking.com as I’m rather busy to check availability right now!’ Needless to say I tried elsewhere. If staff can’t even be bothered to check if they have a room then....

Dear 1353QZ I repute you’re stupid and off Mark review. I, the owner was also at work yesterday, I listened to to the call...... get your facts right eh! The member of staff and I were busy and politely asked if you could ring back or check our website or booking.com for a vacancy Thank goodness we didn’t have t try on for you if this is your attitude even before you stayed. Pathetic that’s all I can say! Get a life. Regards Rory

Stopped at Chaoter Two for Pea and Ham soup and a roll with a Fruit Scone. The food was lovely and the service was great.

A lovely pot of Yorkshire Tea and good soup is what was needed on a cold December day.

A little gem hidden in Malton

Room heating not possible, bedside light not operating, ensuite door not lockable due to shoot bolt jamming. Shower stopover not clean.
Room was clean, and the bedding was fine, but the musty, damp smell was off-putting.
Not an enjoyable experience.

It’s some years since I’ve awarded a ‘poor’ rating to accommodation in which I’ve stayed. I thought I was more discerning and cautious of properties that had no Quality In Tourism accreditation. However, the cost of an accommodation provider joining that scheme is quite high and often they are not prepared to go the extra mile to provide ‘quality’, so it’s left to Trip Advisor to fill the gap.
This room-only accommodation is apparently new and located behind the owner’s bar, which is very stylish and well-patronised. The first problem my wife and I encountered was with the parking on arrival. The website states ‘parking in the Market Place’ which is true, but only for 2 hours. A member of staff said there is parking at the back, but we arrived on a Thursday and Friday is the day of Malton’s cattle market, so, I was warned, parking would not be available that day. I was advised to use the long-term car park, 10 minutes walk away (£6 for 24 hours).
Their web site also says ‘stylish and peaceful en-suite bed rooms’. We were given room 6, certainly not stylish, nor peaceful as it was directly above the outdoor seating/smoking area. Thursday night was quiet, but Friday wasn’t, so we had to keep the window closed.
There was free wi-fi in the bar, but not in the bedroom.
Ratings are a personal thing with visitors having different standards and thoughts on what to expect, so I’ll just go through the list:
The bedroom was just large enough for a comfortable king-size bed, plus wardrobe, two small bedside cabinets and a small table for the kettle, cups etc. There was no mattress protector and no pillow soilers, and the duvet hung out of the cover, dragging on the floor. The kettle was grubby and still contained the water from the last occupant. There were cobwebs in the corners and thick dust on the hard-to reach bits of the skirting. The sash cord on the window was broken and we had to prop it open with the box containing the tea bags (the top window was painted shut).
We found when we wanted one, that there was no hair dryer. A member of the bar staff said they don’t provide them in the rooms, though she did manage to locate one for us. The wardrobe had old wire hangers (never seen that before at £70 per night) and the front of the lower drawer was broken – we were advised by the person showing us to the room not to use it.
The information folder left for us contained two copies of the owner’s bistro, where we could get a discount if we had breakfast there (we found the Patisserie Malton suited our needs better) and a leaflet detailing service times in the local church. A town plan or information on parking would have been really useful, so we left one there.
In the en-suite, there was a good-sized shower cubicle, but the shower unit was heavily encrusted with limescale, which also left water marks on the shower surround. Possibly never cleaned since the day it was installed. There was no light over the mirror (the main light wasn’t that bright either), nor was there a socket for shaver. Also, not a single hook on which to hang clothes etc – though there was a heated towel rail – and no slip mat for the shower.
We arrived back on our second day to find the room hadn’t been serviced, so bed not made up, nothing cleaned or dusted and used teacups just where we had left them. When I queried this on departure, the member of staff said ‘this isn’t a normal B&B, we don’t clean the rooms, though we will if we are asked to’.
I never met the owner, though my wife did and she said he was very pleasant. His bar is great and well designed. Perhaps his letting rooms aren’t finished, but a work in progress. It would be progress if he employed a cleaner.

Good day Thank you for your review regarding your recent stay at Chapter Two Bar. Remembering it was the aTour de Yorkshire that weekend so parking was at a premium. Parts shut off due to the race. We are sorry to hear your stay was not a happy one and all will be looked into. I must say that at £35.00 per person we believe Chapter Two is great value for money and have had no problems with any other guests regarding the agenda you have put together we believe that for us to fully service your room after a Two night stay is unviable however to turn down beds, wash up your cups and fully clean the room after each night is a service offered in a 4/5 star £150/£200 a night establishement. We simply are not that. We are a clean, we'll run, friendly, room only business and treat all customers alike. Again we appreciate your thoughts and will glean from it what we feel fits our and guests needs.

I have to echo Louthrambler’s review of May 3rd. Got back to our room at 1am to find that it hadn’t been serviced. Used coffee cups were where we had left them, bin unemptied, bed unmade, and towels unchanged. The website specifically mentions fresh linen and towels, there was no warning that the wet towels would not be changed, and there was insufficient hanging space in the bathroom, and no radiator, to ensure the used towels dried. From the manager’s response to Louthrambler’s review and the comment about 4/5 star hotels I can only surmise (s)he doesn’t travel much, as even the worst B&B service their rooms daily. Premier Inn, hardly 4/5 star, manages to service their rooms and costs no more than Chapter Two.

In the bathroom there was no light above the mirror, no shaver socket and a couple of pots labelled “sale de Bain Marseille” which at some time in the past may have contained liquid soap but now only contained a dirty residue and cluttered up the small bathroom shelf. The loo seat was loose and Ill fitting. The walls were very strangely painted, as if the painter was short, or had no ladder, and was unable to reach the top. There was a small bar of soap and some shower gel. The quality of the towels was good, but since they were not changed, they were damp on day two. Shower flow was powerful and the water hot.

The bedroom contained a mirror, but again no light or power near it, and a fellow guest in room 3 had to resort to putting her make up on in the corridor! The tiny wardrobe was clearly meant for use by a small child and not an adult. My jacket and shirt were too long to hang. The bed was comfortable, but was missing a piece on the end exposing sharp metal that my wife managed to catch her knee on twice or three times. The curtains were paper thin and unlined, useless if you like a dark bedroom as they failed to keep out the light from the street or the dawn.

There were biscuits with the instant coffee sachets in the bedroom. The use by date on the biscuits was a month previous to our visit. This was drawn to the attention of the management soon after our arrival but they were not replaced during our two night stay.

There was, as advertised, a flat screen TV but I was unaware you could buy TVs that small. The wifi was useless. It was too slow to use, my speed test program was unable to estimate the speed as it was so slow.

Great location and could be good, but the management need to have customer focus, up their game, service the rooms, and spend more on the fixtures, fittings, and maintenance. As it stands it represents extremely poor value for money and I could not recommend it.

I was out on a Saturday night with some friends , all positive vibes until going here. We arrived at this place and bought a bottle of processo to later be rudely asked to leave 10 minutes after last orders were called . We weren’t given time to drink our Prosecco. I have never encountered such rude behaviour from a bar waitress before . Will not be returning due to this rude service.

Dear Vickytan234 I don’t enjoy having to reply to reviews such as yours. Especially when they are not accurate and factual. If you were a regular of Chapter Two Bar you would know and understand on a Friday and Saturday we close our doors at 10.45pm We do this,as we always have, to ensure guests who have been with us all evening are looked after. You and your party entered the bar through our back door at 10.55pm. I prevent others entering at the main entrance by apologising to guests wanting to come in. You requested a drink at 11pm (I was asked if this was ok by a member of staff, seeing you you had just come in) I agreed as long as you were aware we close at 11pm. We then allow guests a further half an hour to finish drinks. At 11.40 I, the owner requested politely everyone to finish drinks. This was then repeated by my team on three further occasions. My fantastic team of bar staff (not waitresses) work long hard hours and give nothing but exceptional, polite and friendly service...... We are sorry we didn’t match your obvious high standards. However before criticising and sharing your misguided comments take your time to ask many of our other fantastic customers all about Chapter Two Bar and our successful way of running a friendly and popular establishment. It works for us but more importantly our wanted guests.... Have a happy Christmas Yours sincerely Rory
