A distinctive traditional building set deep in the forested entrance to the Higashiyama onsen. No lift/elevator, and many rooms can be accessed only by flights of steep polished hardwood stairs. No rutemburo, meals served in your room. The city loop bus stops about 100m away.

Our stay was one of the most authentic Japanese experiences we have ever had. The ryokan is from the Edo period, with beautiful enclosed verandas, fabulous hot spring baths and amazing food. Our room overlooked one of the most beautiful Japanese gardens we have seen, complete with an abundance of cherry blossoms. The room at self was Japanese style, and quite basic, adding to the overall experience. The rooms do not have a shower, this is all done , in the true Japanese style, in the onsen - we loved it!

Mukaitaki is a magnificent old building set deep in a wooded valley at the southern end of the Higashiyama onsen district. The city tour loop bus from the station stops outside. It is a formal ryokan, traditional, with kaiseki meals served in your room. Rooms are accessed by steep and sometimes multiple stairways of polished hardwood. Service was friendly, but little English is spoken, and the meals were disappointing. 3 small onsen available - no rotemburo.

I love everything. Hot springs, cuisines, services, all of them were perfect. And the night garden was marvelous(Look at the pic I uploaded). I highly recommend you visit and enjoy this traditional inn in winter.

My husband and I stayed here for one night. It is a gorgeous traditional inn, all wood with shiny floors and well-kept tatami mats in the rooms. The landscaping outside with the mountains as a backdrop is breathtaking. Even better than the beauty of the inn is the people who work there. Very kind and warm - they will do anything they can to make you feel welcome and special. I requested a special diet - I only eat vegetables and fish (no meat) and they were extremely accommodating. I felt very well taken care of. The food is local to the region, and very delicious. It’s a little bit daunting to a Westerner at first, but if you embrace it you will have no regrets. The baths were amazing in a minimal type of way. They are not made to be modern, but you can feel the history and the water leaves your skin very smooth. 10/10 experience. We will definitely return if we are ever in the area.

We stayed two days at the Mukaitaki hotel and had an enjoyable time. The ryokan is easily accessible by bus or taxi from the train station and situated in a very quiet place where the only noise is the one of the river. If many ryokans are modern, this one is located in a 19th century house which gives a particular charm to the stay. The personnel is super nice (thank you Honda) and really want to make your stay unforgettable. There is several onsets. 2 public baths and 3 private baths. Food was really nice, served in your room. There is many things to see in Aizu and we enjoyed our stay. Definitely a place we would like to com e back with friends or family for a ryokan experience.

This ryokan was accidentally booked. It was a pure Japanese style inn and I was satisfied. The food was the right amount for me and I enjoyed it slowly. The hot springs had several old-fashioned style baths. There are also family baths (private baths) that can be used freely as long as they are available, so it is also good for overseas travelers. I couldn't put it because the bath was a little hot (43 ℃). Since it is a mountain inn, there are spider webs and insects in the garden (it can't be helped because it's summer). There was a festival on the day I stayed. I'm glad I could do it slowly because there were no group tourists.

We arrived from a bike tour soaking wet and tired , service and staff went above , the onsen dates back hundred of years and with 3 types there is a tub for everyone. Food was amazing with the servicing staff providing great service. Rooms are wonderful.

The staff here are top notch and were the best part of the stay. The food was interesting. The inn is quite expensive but is probable worth it to those who value a traditional ryokan experience and Japanese history (such as the inn’s relationship with Dr. Noguchi). Pay extra for a room with a garden view if you splurge to stay here.
