One of the best amount the numerous ryokan stayed in Japan. Historical building (UNSECO) with extension, best on-sen. On top of the hill overlooking Gero. The meal was also excellent. Definitely stay again in the next visit. Also walked to take excellent pictures of the autumn leaves at night, at the temple below.

Amazing architecture, rich Japanese history and experience. Parts of the hotel are super old though and could use some update. Food and service was average. The setting, location, and onsen was the best in the world.

it's taken me too long to write this - I stayed at Yunoshimakan in October and every single thing about it exceeded my expectations. The inn is lovely (tho in a slightly faded way), the town (especially the Onsen shrine and the folk village) is wonderful, the service and food were the best i experienced in two weeks in Japan,...

What an unforgettable stay! Starts with a welcoming troupe who rushed out to our car to welcome us then leave your shoes and wear comfortable slippers. Women are brought to choose their yakutas in lovely designs - This was a daily ritual we looked forward to! The rooms are surprisingly spacious and in traditional Japanese style with 3 sets of...

We stayed one night at a room with private onsen. I had high expectation for this ryokan after reading all the positive reviews. Unfortunately, this was the worst ryokan experience we had ever had. Room Not Ready: We arrived the ryokan at night which I have way in advance notified them. However, when we arrived and showed our room, the...

Thank you for staying with us at YUNOSHIMAKAN and thank you for your valuable advice. It was miscommunication that our staffs were making beds when you went to your room. They should have done it after your going to the dining room. We usually serve welcome tea to our guests. We sometimes ask our guests to go to our dining...

This historic ryokan is located in Gero Onsen, in Gifu Prefecture. We went there from Nagoya after visiting Magome. Gero Onsen is one of the three 'best' onsen according to many Japanese, and Yunoshimakan is one of the most famous there, being a Tangible Cultural Asset recognized by the government. Its history started in 1927 with the beginning of the...

Spent 5 days there. The whole place smells old but you get used to it after. Room was ok. Excellent view. We booked a Bekkan room with outdoor bath. Excellent food although the famed Hida beef was served more often than we liked. The place is huge. If you like scary movies, this could be the place. Many common areas,...

We stayed at Yunoshimakan for 2 nights in October 2016. The shuttle bus collected us from Gero Station, it only takes about 7 minutes but is well worth it as the walk is quite steep. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Yunoshimakan is a long-standing ryokan (Japanese-style inn) in Gero Onsen. The ryokan was established in 1931 and has had the honor of accommodating the previous Emperor Showa and the current Emperor Akihito. The more than 80-years-old wooden structure in a traditional sukiya-style took three years to be built by artisans of Hida, who are local artisans famous for their skillful techniques. The building is designated as a National Tangible Cultural Asset. Since the hotel stands in the great forest, each room commands a view of natural beauty. Guests here can experience the real Japan by staying at this historical main building surrounded by nature. Our ryokan is the best choice for those who want to touch and sample the ambience of real Japan. ... more   less
