Travellers' Choice
A unique luxury hotel located in the picturesque village of Amberley at the foot of the South Downs. Privately owned by Andrew and Christina Brownsword, this magnificent 900-year-old castle is enclosed by a 60 foot high curtain wall and portcullis that remains open, behind which you will discover an enchanting hotel offering the highest standards of food and service. Bedrooms are resplendent with the luxurious facilities you would expect from a country house hotel. History encompasses every part of this wonderful building and the many acres of gardens it stands in. Enjoy discovering our tennis courts, 18-hole putting green and croquet lawn, and even our resident peacock roaming the grounds. For those seeking tranquillity and relaxation, there are many quiet corners to discover under the shade of a tree or by the fireside.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Amberley Castle exceeded our expectations for our trip. It's more than "just a hotel" but truly a unique experience. We only spent one night, but in that time, we experienced the friendliest staff, great food, amazing spaces, and cool views of the castle grounds. Our room was equipped with access to the battlements, which really made it a unique sort of stay. Would definitely stay here again, especially in the spring/summer when more of the outdoor spaces could be utilized.

Booked a private room (King Charles I room) for a mid-sized family dinner to celebrate my husband’s 60th birthday. The venue was stunning (really impressed our French guests), the service was impeccable (but not obsequious), and the food outstanding. The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and made the whole experience stress free. Yes it’s pricey but it’s worth it for a special occasion.

Amberley was always a favourite of ours for years - the food last night was very good - sadly the castle was so cold - making the experience unpleasant and a disappointment being such a high end hotel …

Fabulous night stay at the castle, the staff were brilliant, attentive and friendly and genuinely wanted to ensure we had a lovely time. Room was spotlessly clean, warm and cosy with everything we required. Dinner was delicious highly recommend the tarte tatin. The Castle had been decorated for Xmas and looked beautiful, we felt so lucky to be able to spend the night there. We had a walk after dinner to see the castle all lit up and it was perfect for stargazing. There are lots of great walks close by along the river and a gorgeous village with cosy pub just 5 mins walk through the grounds of the castle. Was given a little tour before checkout and it clearly showed how much the staff enjoy working there. We will definitely return and highly recommend.

Unfortunately, this experience was not up to the usual standard, having stayed at the hotel several times. Although there was a good selection of teas, the savoury offerings were average and the cakes and scones uninspiring .

We visited amberley castle yesterday for a tasty afternoon tea for the three of us. Firstly there was an issue with the gift voucher I had purchased they rectified this quickly an honoured despite they didn’t have to. In the last year I have been to many, many afternoon tea places including the ritz but honestly the service at Amberley was incredible. They were very attentive, made us feel at ease and my grandad felt so welcomed. We all absolutely loved the experience and have said we are keen to go again in the near future. Thank you so much for making my Grandads birthday so special, he is one of a kind and deserves the best. We will be back and I can’t wait!

This was a birthday celebration and the staff were first class. A perfect balance of friendly and service. The surrounding grounds were really pleasant to walk around. The room we stayed in would've benefitted from a Bluetooth music device so you can stream your own music. The biggest issue for us was that there was no door on the bathroom. At this price (£650 per night) that (I feel) is not acceptable. Overall though this was a minor annoyance. Hence 4 stars

Upon arrival we were greeted into ‘the castle’ and seated with drinks and nibbles. We were given the menu with an explanation of the dishes for us to choose. A little later we were escorted up into the restaurant. Service throughout our meal was impeccable all directed and led by Jenny who has an amazing pedigree in service. All courses were well presented but lost some points with flavours. Best dish’s pea soup, monkfish in harissa, wild sea bass, we chose the shared dessert Tarte tatin’, made to perfection but such a large portion. A wonderful experience.
