We recently celebrated my Dad’s 70th birthday at the hotel and were really well looked after making his special day even more special. Bev and the brassiere team were kind and attentive and made sure we all had what we needed, including my 3 year old who was spoilt from the moment we got there. The Sundays roasts were great and we enjoyed the live singer. The hotel itself is beautiful and the rooms well appointed and immaculate. I just wish it had a spa and pool and it’d be back every week! Thanks again for making my Dad’s day a real hit!

Love a good afternoon tea and was looking forward to this . A birthday gift on my birthday . First impressions were good. .very impressive building very friendly staff shown to our table and brought a complimentary rhubarb mocktail and a plate with chocolate strawberries and a happy birthday message ..very nice touches but sadly thats where the nice ended and average took over .. service was poor even though plenty of staff wandering around. .weirdly seem trained to avoid eye contact with customers could not get anyones attention even though they were walking around as i wanted to order a cocktail and extra coffee..eventually after about 20 mins trying i got up and went to the service area and asked for coffee.. it did arrive quickly once id asked though..the food on offer was average or maybe just below average ..a fair few niggles ...the sandwiches were made with good bread but the filling was so sparce ..making sandwiches seem dry and cheap . The homemade sausage rolls had a very strange taste we didnt even finish that .?? The cakes were all brought in definately not homemade or generous in size or taste ..the scones were very nice homemade and very tasty ..the items we didnt eat we asked for them to be packed to take home ..a beautiful establishment and they just hand you a box at the table. No wrapping just a box to pack yourself i found this cheapened the experience . My honest opinion is there are so many better places that offer better service and better quality menus for less than than what my sister paid for this treat...and my message to Wivenhoe house ..you have a chance to be the best with the beautiful surroundings sadly without a quality afternoon tea and quality service you will fall to the wayside ...maybe go to visit and see what others offer and up your game to stay in it.. my first recommendation is the Lavenham tea rooms ...personal service home made quality that really has shown that you can pay a little more for a reason and that reason is quality not pining everything on a named reputation..sorry if this isnt a high review..was extremely shocked after hearing such good things about wivenhoe house 😢

this hotel is great - one of the best I have been visited in UK. The room was exceptional. Very spacious and extremely clean. The bathroom was large and full of very useful items, such as razor and toothbrush and paste. All is eco-friendly. Staff is extremely polite and useful and they walked me to my room. Dinner and breakfast was very good too. I definitely recommend this Hotel

Organized a dinner for 125 people. Lisa and her team was extremely helpful ironing out the last minute hitches (on my part). The 3 course meal was very successful, with good food and service with no complaints. I didn't stay but I am told our guests enjoyed their stay.

Set within the university grounds, this former Georgian grade II listed mansion presents an imposing structure as one approaches along its iron fenced driveway. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful and after the check-in formalities kindly showed us to the lift which would take us to our floor. Our room was spacious and clean with a huge super king bed (attention to detail: we had requested a twin bedded room, which had been confirmed by email. But we decided not to mention this as the room was excellent and bed big enough). The balcony provided a view overlooking the playing fields and garden. At 7am on Sunday morning we were suddenly woken by a loud rushing noise resembling the sound of a passing train (no train tracks in the vicinity) or jet engine. Upon investigation I discovered that it was the noise of air being extracted through a single vent in the bathroom ceiling. I suppose that’s one way of ensuring the room gets vacated on time! Having got ready for the day, we went down to breakfast half an hour after the Sunday breakfast service commenced (according to the in-room guest directory). No one greeted us at the podium which said "please wait to be seated". After waiting a while, we entered the bar area and were told by the server behind the bar, who seemed to be preparing coffees or teas, that we could sit at any table that had coloured mugs on it. We sat at a table which appeared to be available. Only two being occupied at the time. After a bit of a wait, the same server approached, apologised for the wait and took our room number and noted our drinks and toast order. The server advised us that the breakfast was buffet service and both hot and cold items were in the area off to the left of the restaurant. The hot food was contained in a centralised array of several chafing dishes, each displaying a note of its contents. I served myself some hot food onto a plate taken from a stack of cold plates located by the chafing dishes and went back to our table. Almost everything on my plate was either lukewarm or cold: scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage. The only thing that was hot was my coffee and toast. I waited to point this out but there were no servers to be found. We both finished our meal and left the restaurant. Upon departure I mentioned to the receptionist that the cooked breakfast was cold and she apologised. She did say that someone could have heated it up for me. To my mind that is not the point. It should have been hot in the first place! I did mention that there was no one in the restaurant at the time. This hotel is a Hotel School "offering students valuable, practical experience in a fully-commercial hotel and connecting them with the industry right from the start". I would have expected better.

We would not recommend the vegan or vegetarian afternoon tea. We've had quite a few of these afternoon teas at different places and this one just wasn't up to scratch. The experience was let down by the food which just wasn't very tasty or well-executed overall, especially compared to other places. The sandwiches were very lacklustre and it's a shame because somebody in the kitchen had tried to make a mini vegan pavlova which was runny and a macaron which was very flat. I guess at least they tried! We were also seated on a small table in the restaurant which was barely able to fit both cake stands on so felt quite cramped. What was excellent about this place was the service and the live musician. Hopefully the kitchen will up their game on the afternoon teas in future. If they could do as well as the waiting staff, this place would be good.

My wife and myself stayed for 3 nights 17th-20th Nov whilst visiting family. We booked via interval international a classic room(smaller rooms). The main building and grounds are magnificent set within the University. The hotel communal areas, toilets and Lounges were spotless, as was our room and the Brasserie where breakfast was served and meals through the day. The staff are extremely friendly , smartly dressed and very professional. We dined one night at the Brasserie and the meal was lovely well worth the money. The bar is small but very nice and again the staff were superb throughout the Brasserie. I would like to stay in summer as the terrace by the bar appears a great place to relax. Breakfast offers everything you would need, full cooked English , patisserie, fruit , cereal etc all perfectly baked cooked and fresh. Many hotels like to sell themselves as home from home, I think Wivenhoe house achieves this creating a relaxed atmosphere through staff professionalism. We had a lovely time and will definitely stay in the future when visiting relatives. Having stayed at Westin, Marriott, Starwood , Wivenhoe House achieves their level of service, cleanliness, professionalism at a value for money price well done and thank you for a great stay.
