We would not recommend the vegan or vegetarian afternoon tea. We've had quite a few of these afternoon teas at different places and this one just wasn't up to scratch. The experience was let down by the food which just wasn't very tasty or well-executed overall, especially compared to other places. The sandwiches were very lacklustre and it's a shame because somebody in the kitchen had tried to make a mini vegan pavlova which was runny and a macaron which was very flat. I guess at least they tried! We were also seated on a small table in the restaurant which was barely able to fit both cake stands on so felt quite cramped. What was excellent about this place was the service and the live musician. Hopefully the kitchen will up their game on the afternoon teas in future. If they could do as well as the waiting staff, this place would be good.

Hotel's Favourite
I just LOVE this place! To stay it is a beautiful hotel with beautiful grounds! Never had a bad nights sleep here! Me and my partner have stayed here on numerous occasions now and would definitely keep coming back. Though we’ve never tried the restaurant, the breakfast is amazing. We always opt for room service and it couldn’t be easier. Simply fill out a form and it’ll get dropped off in the morning. I’m quite fussy with a breakfast, no mushrooms or tomatoes ! Asked to substitute hashbrowns which wasn’t a problem. Pastries, Fruits, Yoghurts, Cereal, Toast. Juice, tea and coffee and the hot breakfast all included !!! Very good value for money, all around lovely stay and would continue to go back. We’ve also seen a wedding being set up on the grounds in the summer and I have to say it looked like a beautiful venue for it!

Dear Lils, We are so pleased you love it here, we love you too! Some say that as a hotelier you have not got it right unless your guests sleep well, so it is great to hear you have never had a bad nights sleep here. I stayed myself last night due to a late meeting and it is nice to remind myself how comfortable and quiet our rooms are. I am fussy with breakfast too. Everyone has a different ideal breakfast and I think that we are catering for most people. See you again soon we hope. Kind regards, Oliver J. Q. Brown General Manager

My wife and myself stayed for 3 nights 17th-20th Nov whilst visiting family. We booked via interval international a classic room(smaller rooms). The main building and grounds are magnificent set within the University. The hotel communal areas, toilets and Lounges were spotless, as was our room and the Brasserie where breakfast was served and meals through the day. The staff are extremely friendly , smartly dressed and very professional. We dined one night at the Brasserie and the meal was lovely well worth the money. The bar is small but very nice and again the staff were superb throughout the Brasserie. I would like to stay in summer as the terrace by the bar appears a great place to relax. Breakfast offers everything you would need, full cooked English , patisserie, fruit , cereal etc all perfectly baked cooked and fresh. Many hotels like to sell themselves as home from home, I think Wivenhoe house achieves this creating a relaxed atmosphere through staff professionalism. We had a lovely time and will definitely stay in the future when visiting relatives. Having stayed at Westin, Marriott, Starwood , Wivenhoe House achieves their level of service, cleanliness, professionalism at a value for money price well done and thank you for a great stay.

Booked last minute for a business trip. Great check-in and room, but service in restaurant was exemplary. All the staff were great, as was the food, boss even sat down near me for a chat, such a nice guy. Will definitely return when next in area.

We decided to book a room at Wivenhoe house hotel for my 26th birthday. We were greeted by Gabrielle, who said happy birthday and got us checked in. I added to the booking that it was my birthday and was pleasantly surprised to see the hotel room decorated when we arrived. What was even more surprising, is that my boyfriend decided to propose there and then in the beautiful hotel room. From then on, we were treated with a full red carpet. We asked for some Prosecco to be brought up, and were greeted by Vusi, the Front of House Manager and Lionel, who I assume was in charge of the restaurant. They arrived with chocolate covered strawberries and a warm congratulations which was wonderful. Lionel also assured us not to rush in order to make it for our dinner reservations but to take our time, which was lovely. When we went down for dinner, we were greeted by Vincenzo and Lionel who helped us open our Prosecco (we failed to get the cork out lol). We were swept away to our table which was decorated with small crystals and our meals were amazing, especially since our Prosecco was topped up all evening and displayed beautifully in an ice bucket. We received these beautifully displayed plates that said Happy Birthday and Congratulations. It seemed that all the staff were aware of our celebration and we received many congratulations. We went back to our room and ordered some hot chocolates which were lovely. The next morning, we decided to have breakfast which was a beautiful spread, after breakfast, we decided to head back to our room to relax and we decided to finish our day off with afternoon tea. Afternoon tea was wonderful, We were greeted once again by Vincenzo, who assured us that we could come in before our reservation time, The table was decorated once again and I received a beautifully decorated plate saying happy birthday with chocolate covered strawberries. We said goodbye to all the staff and checked out, It was lovely to say goodbye to Gabrielle again who checked us in. Our stay was magical and wonderful. Every member of staff that we met made us feel special and at home. The red carpet was pulled out and we received such special treatment. We have decided to return for my Fiance's birthday at the end of the month because it was that wonderful. Thank you once again (Apologies if I have spelt names wrong)

Cheap and noisy portable AC unit in room made it difficult to sleep, water temperature only Luke warm in shower. I ordered an expensive lamb dish from the menu I couldn’t believe the meat was about as big as a golf ball, and the new potatoes were hard I think from the microwave perhaps. The £49 bottle of wine I chose to be honest I suspect was another wine relabelled for them, no I’m sorry I was not at all happy with this hotel and it’s standard and cannot understand how it has such a high rating, very sad to see a stately home turned into a low grade hotel.

Dear Jeffrey, We thank you for your review, and are of course sorry that you have left disappointed, and apologise that we have not live expectation on this occasion. We are making some changes in our restaurant next week and I assure you that quality is being address on the menu. I can promise you that the wine was not a relabelled wine as you suggest. We would have been very happy to replace it had we known of your dissatisfaction with it. We are also sorry that the portable air cooler was too noisy for you, and that you could only get luke warm water from the shower. We had no other complaints/comments of water temperature, so this was local to you room, and again, had we known, we may have been able to assist. We pride ourselves on offering the best service in a wonderful hotel, and clearly we have not on this occasion. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly should you decide to come again one day and try us, and I will ensure you of the utmost care and attention. Kind regards, Oliver J. Q. Outstanding short break away from London. It was the first break in years that I had taken with my wife without the children. Exactly what the doctor ordered to chill out and just relax. Joe the booking team staff provided useful suggestions and we booked the Exclusive Suite with a view and the breakfast and dinner package. View overlooked the Brasserie and the lovely cricket and football grounds of the University of Essex at Wivenhoe campus Great large bedroom and a huge bathroom well organized with walk in tropical shower features, bath tub and all amenities Lauren at Reception. And Bev Newman from the Brasserie made our stay extra special. Few small requests and concerns were dispensed off quickly by the Reception. The breakfast had an enormous selection of hot and cold buffet items. The dinner items were all very well cooked and so were the breakfast extra hot items like omelette and veg hot dishes that they offered. Comparable to total 5* quality in terms of room, comfort, service and food. Only slight negative is that Wi-Fi was slow on computer in our room although it was fine over phone.

This is a beautiful hotel set in the grounds of Wivenhoe Park. Easy access to Wivenhoe and to Colchester town. The reception staff are welcoming and helpful. The garden rooms in the new extension are comfortable and the beds are wonderfully soft. Everything is what you would expect from a 4 star hotel. The breakfast selection was good, but a bit disappointing that the vegetarian alternative was a sausage shaped mashed potato combo. The service was a little slow too with plates being piled up but not removed. The bar and garden is delightful. I will definitely be coming back again.

What a fantastic concept! The hotel is absolutely lovely, a combination of an old and new build accommodation. I stayed in The Milson's suite, which was in the main house. All their suites are generously sponsored, designed and named after different UK hotel groups. The property is also a school for young and passionate hoteliers, which in my opinion makes it so special.

Our son booked a table for Sunday roast, on arrival we were kept waiting to be seated, eventually when we asked again how long before we will be seated (just incase we were forgotten about) the front house lady went to check and soon after we were seated. After little while our drinks/ food oder was taken, nice bottle of chilled tap water was served then soon after our drinks followed. My wine glass was dirty once I asked for the glass to be changed the waiter was very apologetic and brought me a clean glass. There are not many choices on the menu for roast dinner, we ordered two lamb and 1 beef roast dinner ( had to ask for lamb rump to be served with roast trimmings as I don’t eat beef and there was only beef roast dinner on the menu) waitress kindly asked the chief who said they could server that) I had asked for my lamb to be done well. After 1 hour wait my husband asked one of the staff members if we are likely to get our food served soon, there were lot a staff but not a single server stopped to check if we needed anything we were left waiting… Once the food finally arrived it was nice and hot, I had nice bloody lamb which puts me off my food, my husband’s beef was chewy and had weird smell to it. We will not be returning to eat here again and definitely will not be recommending to anyone sorry not a pleasant experience, when asked why the delay, the front of house lady got very defensive and said it was due to because we didn’t order a starter!!!! we were there to celebrate our son’s new job, what a let down.
