La Hacienda Hostel is located next to Cabo Samana National Park in the Las Galeras countryside overlooking the ocean and a ten minute walk to the nearest beach. Las Galeras town center is only 3 kilometers away, a thirty minute walk via the beach . The hostel consists of five rooms, all but one with a private bathroom. There is a common open space kitchen/dining/living area. Private rooms start at US $25, doom beds are US $14 and the whole hostel is US $ 150. This budget accommodation is basic with fans available and with a rain harvesting system for water with drinking water supplied. Breakfast is available by request and is charged extra. For people who like it to have more privacy a beautiful holiday house (hot water shower) is available on the property. Our specialty is the wonderful natural environment and horse riding excursions. The animal loving owner lives on site as do a few of the horses, a number of rescue cats and two dogs. Long term renting of a room or the holiday home is possible.

At the recommendation of our hotel’s owner, we reached out to Karin, who offered a half-day guided ride with a hike to a secluded beach and a few caves. The experience did not disappoint! My wife and I rode the lively Ricky and Henry, who were all too glad to munch here and there when they weren’t guiding us through the farmlands and jungle to our hiking spot. And they handled very nicely even when trotting. Our guide Bienvi did an excellent job steering the 3 of us through the narrow trail down to where we left the horses for the hiking part of our trek, fresh with sampling fresh coconuts and a much-deserved quick swim at the beach spot. Karin also welcomed us into her special property after the ride, complete with many, many rescue kitties. A great adventure in Las Galeras and excellent value!

We went to playa Madama with Karins beatuful and peaceful horses. We are family of four, girl is 4 and baby is one. The guides were very friendly, we enjoyed the tour very much. Karin is very nice Lady, she picked us up in the hotel and took to her ranch. I would definitly recommend this activity to everyone who loves horses. For us it was the Best family activity during our Dominican trip!

Karin is a very very lovely woman who ownes a cat shelter with mainly disabled cats. She cares for the cats with the money she get from trips and the hostel . The cat house is amazing and Karin takes the best care for them like medicines and food . The horse riding trips are amazing! It’s off the beaten track and takes you to small paths trough the wilderness and small unknown beaches. We even saw a snake and ate mango’s and coconuts on the way ! It is probably the best way to experience las galeras and surroundings ! Highly recommended !

I had a wonderful time on a very secure horse. Riding with an english speaking guide around the hills of Las Galeras to a spot called Punto with a stunning view of the ocean and surrounding countrysides. My horse was very sure footed and very friendly. After Punto we rode to Playa Madama and my guide got a coconut from a tree, and showed me how to open it. So I had fresh coco nut for the first time in my life compared with amazing views of a wonderful beach which is not reachable by car. I had a wonderful time and will definately be back there if I come to Las Galeras once more! Thank you Karin for making this trip possible!

Situated on a hill, overlooking the Bay of Las Galeras, this ecological guesthouse and ranch offers a wonderful view. Accomodation solutions for all budgets: You can rent the whole ground floor, which sleeps up to 11 persons, or choose between twin or single rooms, or just share a room with fellow travellers. An excellent address for animal lovers - you meet many cats, dogs and horses! The flemish owner Karin organizes Horse Riding Excursions and Walking Tours. Veggies from the garden can be cooked in the outdoor kitchen. Very international place - many langues spoken (Dutch, German, English, French, Spanish).

While we did not spend the night at La Hacienda, it was recommended to us by our hosts right outside of Las Galeras. We were looking for a hiking excursion while visiting the Samana area during our stay. Once they set us up with Karin, we were told we could ride horses with a guide and also hike to La Playa Fronton. When we arrived our horses and guide were waiting for us and Karin had everything ready to go. Our guide William was fantastic. We rode horses for a while to an area where we left them to hike up a beautiful, lush mountain and were very impressed with the views of Fronton and surrounding areas. After reaching the peak of our hike, we continued down to the beach, stopping at a very cool cave on the way. Once arriving on the beach, we had time to relax while a meal was prepared for us. There was also a boat that William recommended we join to go watch the whales. We had a very unique experience getting close to several whales as they frolicked in the water before heading back in for lunch followed by our hike and horseback ride back to the ranch. Karin and William provided a very memorable day that we would highly recommend to anyone looking for a challenging adventure during their stay!

Hello So nice for you that you had the luck to see lizards. I am sorry to read that a centipede has "Touched" you. Fortunately touched and not stung. As I need to go on working here want to add that you and the group where camping here and not in a room (I don't want people thinking that I have centipedes in the rooms). As we only use rainwater collected from the roof, not having hot water is a way to safe water (shorter showers) and not having to pay trucks delivering water which is very expensive. This way I can keep the prices low for you guests. Thank you for the review and always welcome here at the Hacienda. Karin

Was looking for a relaxing solo vacation in a remote spot. Couldn't have found a more perfect place. Karin (the owner) couldn't have been more accommodating. She found me guides for hikes around the area, gave great advice about things to do, and served a fabulous, fresh breakfast every morning. This place is not for everyone! But if you want peace and quiet in a beautiful, rustic setting, then this is the place to go! I spent 5 nights there and would definitely go back.

My friend and I intended to stay with Karin for just three nights, but as soon as we arrived we knew we needed to stay longer and ended up staying for a week. Karin made us feel at home right away in a new country. She knew everything about Las Galeras and gave great advice. She helped us out by making reservations and putting us in touch with her contacts for meals, motoconcho rides, and a trip to Playa Rincon by boat. The beaches in Las Galeras are beautiful and easily accessed by foot, but we loved spending time in Karin's compound as well. Her garden is beautiful, her animals are friendly and well cared for, and our room and the kitchen were clean, equipped with the essentials, and comfortable. Though there is not ac or hot water, sustainability and authenticity were as important to us as they are to Karin. We recommend taking advantage of breakfast at Karin's which fueled us for our adventures with local cheeses, eggs from her chickens, and delicious breads and fresh juices. Also, a sunset dinner at a neighborhood spot overlooking the ocean consisting of fresh-caught lobster and a cold Presidente was well worth the cost. Another highlight was when we took a ride with Karin's horses to Playa Madame and our wonderful guide William got us fresh coconuts and took us to explore a cave. We loved our stay at Hacienda Hostel. After three weeks in the DR we can say it was our favorite part of the trip.

Karin's place is a really beautiful and green retreat on the top of a small hill facing the sea, with a wonderful beach accessible on foot (10 min walk). It was an inspiring experience to stay one week there, living in a simple but cosy way, respectful of nature, people and the environment, with very friendly guests and host, nice cats, dogs and horses around. Karin knows everything and everybody in Las Galeras, she gives you advices and organises nice horse rides if you wish, she is always happy to help you and share her experience, dedicated to make your stay the greatest possible. I extended my stay and didn't want to leave the place in the end. I will definitely go back. Karin, I hope to see you very soon!
