Hotel Antica Dimora Leones.
Reviewer: Michael Scott

Since discovering this wonderful Hotel, over one year ago, I have stayed here at least a dozen times.
The hotel is situated in the midst of Palaia a beautifully preserved medieval hill town, replete with ancient churches, narrow winding streets and wonderful views; strategically placed almost equidistant between Pisa, Florence, Lucca and San Gimignano it provides an ideal base for the exploration of Tuscany.
The Hotel, as its name Antica Dimora implies, is a wonderful tastefully restored palazzo, the former home of the family who now manage it. Whilst the hotel has every modern convenience, air-conditioning, en suite bathrooms, a Jacuzzi, the richly decorated walls and intimate rooms furnished with appropriate and tastefully chosen antiques gives rise to the impression that one is a private rather than a paying guest in the home of some illustrious merchant of former times.
This feeling of intimacy and ease is further encouraged by the truly Italian welcome of Andrea and Emmanuelle, the proprietors, the lavish breakfasts and the many comfortable sitting and reading rooms arranged throughout the hotel for relaxation.
Hotel Antica Dimora is a haven of solicitude and old world courtesy and represents, for me, the true character of Tuscany.

We wanted to visit Tuscany but we didn't want to stay in a busy place, and after seeing some photos on internet of the Antica Dimora Leones we decided to base ourselves in Palaia, a pretty mediaeval town on a hill top with fantastic views over the Tuscan countryside. We rented a car as we wanted to travel around. The hotel looked great in the photos but it was even better in real life. It was a family home that has been restored keeping it's characteristic higgledy piggledy architecture, frescoes and antiques. All the bedrooms are different and lead off small lounges where you can sit and read one of their books on Tuscan art. The garden is wonderful with a very old wisteria and in the old ice cellar they've fitted a jacuzzi which is just what you need after a trek round Sienna, Florence or Pisa. The management made us very welcome and we had particularly good breakfasts with homemade cakes and jams.

We would thoroughly recommend this hotel and are looking forward to going back.

We cannot speak highly enough of Antica Dimora Leones, the people who work there, and the fantastic surroundings. We spent three nights here, in the Medieval hill town of Palaia, and save for a few unwanted mosquito bites, everything was perfect. From the moment we arrived, to be welcomed with wine and pastries in the beautiful garden by the lovely Cecilia, to each night spent in the romantic hot tub, we couldn't have asked for more. Each room has unique antique furniture, courtesy of the last owners of the property - grandparents of the current owner. The bathroom was spotless, and each window provides stunning views over the Tuscan hillside. If you can, persuade your hostess to arrange a Tuscan meal one evening. This was one of the most delicious meals, and certainly the best value, we have ever eaten in Italy, although be warned, it was seven generous courses! Palaia itself is fairly quiet, but makes a great base for touring nearby cities, or if you just want to relax on the terrace with a good book then you may never have to leave the hotel. Very special indeed.

When you open the shutters in the morning the sun steams in and the view of rolling hills and tuscany landscape takes your breath away.
An old house beautifully restored, the attention to detail was amazing and the couple who run it are ultimately helpful, they even reserved us a table at a local restaurant one friday night - when the whole place was booked out!

While the street below can be a bit noisy, it doesn't diminish the pure uniqueness of the place!

The accommodation was beautiful, with all rooms we saw being spacious
and individually decorated. All rooms in the house were furnished in typical tuscan style and spotlessley clean. Your hosts Andrea and Manuela are very warm and hospitable people who obviously have taken a pride in the renovation works and welcome all guests into their home. The garden is a very peaceful place in which to sit and read or simply relax after a hectic day exploring the surrounding areas. The jacuzzi area is great to return to early evening when you are tired from seeing the many sights in Tuscany, a great way to unwind.
We felt that it is really necessary to have a car and found that there never seemed to be any problem in finding a car parking space in Palaia. We ordered an evening meal during our stay and this was simply outstanding and not expensive as wine was included in the price. Beautifully prepared food, approximately 6 courses in total, and served in a private dining area.

Palaia is a delightful, away from the madding crowd, village. There is a small but lively pub nearby, two further eating venues as well as a couple of bars where the locals have beverages and pass the day away. Recommendation would be to book a day or so in advance for the restaurants as they both got fairly full. Once back in Palaia for the evening there is sufficient venues so no necessity to drive. Definitely a place to return to and recommend to friends. Idyllic setting and fabulous hosts. We will be returning.

The medieval town of Palaia is a beautiful place. The views are spectacular. Hotel was very unique, has been refurbished to very high standard, but has not lost any character or charm. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely return to this hotel.

We were recommended this place by a respected interior designer who really knows his stuff, while travelling on our honeymoon. So we kind of knew it would be cool.
We slept beneath magical painted owls on the ceiling, and loved bumbling around the hilltop village. Breakfast was served beneath a hundred year old wisteria. At one point I thought I'd gone back in time, and put on a pair of tights. My wife found me and totally understood my vibe. It was a big moment in our new marriage.

Greeted by the very friendly Violetta on arrival who showed us to our room upstairs. 3 storeys up, but lift available which we used to take our bags up. Very pleased with our room which was roomy also another little room adjacent for our use, with a single bed. All furnishings are antiques and wall decor. in the rooms we saw were painted fresco style. You could spend days just looking at the various objects lying around in the shared communal areas. If you can read Italian there is plenty of old books to read. We felt the garden could do with a little bit more care, but as it was getting colder in the day we did not use it.
Breakfast consisted of bread, meats, cheese, cake and fruits. Juice available and coffee at the push of a button at leisure once you have been shown how to use the machine. At least five excellent Restaurants to chose from in the town.
There is a clock tower and this rings every hour and does this twice. Yes! at midnight 12 then 5 minutes later 12 more. Apparently it was a system to ensure workers got up at the right time in the morning. We got used to it though.
The private parking is an absolute boom. Easy to access and secure.
Palaia is a beautiful place to stay with major places to visit close by. Pisa 40km and Volterra 20km. Also Ideal for those early flights from Pisa International. We will certainly be back and use it for our last few days of the main holiday.

We found this enchanting little place by chance as our apartments were not available.
The little bed and breakfast is in a quiet little corner of the town that itself is off the beaten track.
An old family home available to use as a base in this area.Full of lovely quirky rooms ,all lovely and traditional in their decoration and layout.
Just lovely for those looking for peace and quiet in old ,traditional surroundings.
Wifi available though if needing to stay in contact.
