I found out about Gladstone's based on a recommendation from a friend and I came away very impressed. On first arrival I found myself immediately caught up in the atmosphere of what is an impressive and inspiring building. The building is listed, and the grounds are very impressive - it is worth a stroll round to have a look at...

Pleasant food and nice surroundings. The restaurant has limited seating so it's better to book or at least arrive early. There are a range of table sizes with bigger tables occasionally being shared by 2 or more groups. The service is cafeteria style self service with the food being home made some choices of main meal and options for salad...

Have political interests so always wanted to go, and Gladstone's Library did not disappoint. Nice location and grounds and tastefully decorated throughout. Breakfast had good options and tasty. Room basic but good, although found the shower cubicle a little small and I'm not huge. Will come back.

Although the afternoon tea was delicious and plenty of it I and my husband were disappointed with everything else. Poor staff relations, no ambiance and stark surroundings. Not a hotel but does have en suite rooms.

Dear Pauline, I'm very sorry that you did not enjoy your visit to the Library on this occasion. The ambiance of Food for Thought really does depend upon our guests and unfortunately it was a particularly quiet day on which you visited us. We take your comments regarding staff relations very seriously so if you could email amy.sumner@gladlib.org with further...

Our cycling group visit the Gladstone for our coffee stop a few times each year. Today was too cold to sit out so we sat in the lovely refectory. We always receive a warm welcome from the staff and all our quirky requests are met with a smile. The home made scones are to die for. If we lived a...

Gladstone's Library had been on my bucket list for a long time, since listening to an enthusiastic programme about it on Radio 4. It didn't disappoint. Gladstone's mission was 'divine learning' and this building is his legacy. One wing of the house is a silent gothic temple of a library, where you can read, study and reflect. Gladstone's particular interests...

My friend and I were only looking for lunch on this occasion and didn't have time to go into the library, but the Food for thought restaurant in there is a hidden gem. I wouldn't have known it was even there if someone hadn't recommended it. The food was fantastic, one of the nicest lunches I've ever had, and the...

Stayed here for a week. Only place in England where you can actually stay in a library. I was here for peace and quiet to do some writing, but bed and breakfast was also offered to those touring the area. Fantastic library. Most friendly place I have ever stayed in - nothing was too much trouble. Atmosphere among the staff...

Have to object to the review which is "grudging". Gladstone's Library is a treasure and a very special place. The Library itself is open to guests most of the day and evening contrary to this review and as the managers stated radios and toiletries are freely available. Find fault if you must on minor details but they will not stand...
