If you like small, family owned hotels with plenty of local character and charm then Mangrove Lodge is for you. With five double bungalows set in a very large green garden, the lodge has a communal restaurant and a chill out area with Zanzibari beds. It’s calm and quiet with the sea breezes to keep you cool. Then there is a charming garden by the sea with a big swimming pool and plenty of comfy swing beds and sun loungers. The food was very nice and all prepared fresh, which is important as there is not much nearby this hotel. Usually we took two courses for $15. Portion sizes were generous. They provided soy milk and arranged a Birthday Cake.
The owners have taken great care to plant trees, and preserve the mangroves below, and free water is available, so no need for plastic pollution. The hotel sits on a creek so when the tide is high the sea gets a little muddy. This isn’t a hotel for the white sand beaches and blue water as there isn’t any snorkelling, but it is a relaxing and intimate place that will do all they can to help you feel personally welcomed, which is completely lacking in the larger, louder resorts. We took several tours to snorkel and visit a beach to the north.
The beach was good for taking long walks and morning runs when the tide was out, and no one hassled us. There is a large, local fish market nearby and a row of smoke houses that one can walk to.
It was lovely for children, as it was completely safe and secure and they could run around as they wished and play with the friendly rescue cats and dogs that live in the garden.
The staff were very attentive and the rooms were clean and tidy. Bring coffee and a cafetière if you don’t like instant. Very good WiFi.
I recommend this hotel for families, especially those with small kids.

Amazing huge grounds with beautiful gardens . Great pool / beach are with bar .

Very large and comfortable rooms in traditional Zanzibari style with good a/c ( although not really needed as rooms stay cool without )

Very good food at restaurant and very reasonably priced ( not many other options nearby ) Breakfast has good variety with small buffet and made to order eggs etc .

Hotel has lots of chill out areas to hangout in .

Owners very friendly ! Had a really great relaxing time and was sad to go after 3 nights . Location is very secluded but cars are readily available to take you if you want to leave the premises .

This lodge was recommended to me as being the perfect place to go after the heat and business of Stone Town and they were right. Lovely atmosphere run by a couple who were on site. The rooms might be a bit dated but its got a great location right on the beach and the common areas of the lodge are the perfect places to chill and relax. Nice breakfast.

Mangrove Lodge was by far the best hotel we stayed in during our family vacation on Zanzibar. The hotel is secluded, located at the end of a dirt road right at the beach. It consists of cabins situated in a beautiful, well kept garden, a reception/restaurant building as well as a beach/pool section with a beach bar. We loved everything about the hotel - the exceptionally fiendly staff, a nice clean pool with abundant sunbeds and hammocks, tasty breakfasts and lunch/dinner options, an amazing garden full of local cats. The kids were free to explore hotel grounds and roam around safely. Our room was furnished in a traditional, basic way but we found it adequate and very clean. The hotel also provided parking for our rental car. We had no trouble communicating with the staff either via Booking or Whatsapp.

The one and only thing that could use some improvement is wifi - only available at the reception. But maybe it's not so bad to get offline in such a great place!

Our experience staying at Mangrove was absolutely phenomenal. We really appreciated the ECO friendly environment and the focus on eliminating waste. The rooms were very clean, spacious, and all around very nice. The staff was also amazing and took steps to make our Honeymoon celebration spectacular and memorable. Additionally, the on location restaurant has great food with a lot of variety including local dishes to try. I would highly recommend the Mangrove Lodge to anyone who is looking for a nice place to relax and take in the Zanzibar sun while still being relatively close to Stone Town.

PS - get an outfit made from the local tailor, you won't be disappointed.

The Mangrove Lodge is set in expansive, beautiful gardens. The rooms are two together in spacious cottages, nicely decorated in Zanzibari style with well functioning airconditioning. Unfortunately no wifi in the room (it is available in the restaurant and at the beach). Food is very good and not expensive to Western standards, but takes a long time to prepare … think at least one hour. Therefore dinner orders are already taken in the afternoon. There is a menu of transportation and excursions, executed aa agreed although some unclarity about the cost (which could be resolved). Very nice pool/beach area with great beach bar. The road to the lodge is very bumpy, not inviting one to leave the lodge too often for excursions etc.

If you are looking for a quiet place to unwind - this is the place. Location is very quiet and away from the hustle of the main road. There is a lovely infinity pool and easy access to the beach. Be warned the beach boys are somewhat intrusive when going for a walk. If you had planned to do some work wifi is only available in public areas. The team working there is great and really friendly. If you want to go to Stone Town it becomes a little costly if you do not rent your own bike. Overall nice trip. Really depends on what you are wanting for your getaway

This was our third stop during our trip in Zanzibar. As the last stop we were looking for a reasonably priced lodge situated in the area of the Airport and Stone Town. We made our reservation directly through email and have received prompt reply.
Even though the lodge is on the beach front it some way from the main road. At the time of writing this little connecting road was full of potholes and was a bumpy ride, but - as I read some negative comments about this - it is like all other dirt roads in Zanzibar. So just hold on to your hat and good spirits.
Staff and management were very helpful, friendly and took the time to tell us all the background and information we needed and much more … the Italian way, with arms and legs.
Food was from the daily menu. The quality and choice was good quality. The best part of the meal was the covered terrace where the cool breeze helped drive away the heat.
The pool is at the beach front, a bit of walk from the villas. A nice touch is the bar located next to the pool, always stocked with cold beer.
The villas are a bit smaller (three of us stayed in one room) than other lodges, but didn’t matter. Its just a place to sleep in.
WI-FI available at the lounge.

I've travelled to many places around the world and Mangrove Lodge is special place that was hard to leave. From tropical gardens to oceans views, this is a place with charm and beauty. The owners and staff are genuinely welcoming and very knowledgable of the history, places to go and even where to stay in other parts of zanzibar.
The food is freshly prepared and the breakfast is delicious. I had far too many endless cups of spiced tea and coffee. The is a wonderful chill out area to watch the ocean world go by and even do some yoga.

I was a guest there last month. The owners built a beautiful new pool late last year beside the beach. It was brilliant and lovely to watch the sunset while swimming.
