Old Church Farm, formerly Alveston Manor, dates back to the 11th Century when it was a royal hunting lodge. It gets its modern name from the 12th Century now ruined church of St Helen that is just a few yards away within the grounds. Wood panelled rooms and Tudor plastered ceilings feature in the main house with its luxury en suite bedrooms. A state of the art conference centre and function room with skittle alley is also available for hire. Evening meals are available with 24 hours notice. All meals are home cooked in our 5 star commercial kitchen using produce from our vegetable garden and local markets. Guests may also enjoy our ornamental rose garden and croquet lawn with views over the South Gloucestershire countryside. It holds the AA 5 star gold award- which places us in the best in Great Britain. We also were given awards for Breakfast and Dinner, so, if you are staying with us be sure to make a reservation for your meals. History, comfort and first class service await you.

Detailed Reviews
We chose Old Church Farm for its proximity to Bristol, its 5 star food rating and its approach to CV19 safety. We were not disappointed and discovered it offers so much more!
Old Church Farm is a beautiful Tudor building, with many original features, which has been transformed into a luxurious B&B. On arrival our host Christopher explained their Covid precautions and after sanitising and signing in we were shown to our room.
We stayed in room 6, which is their smallest room, but was spacious and bright, with a large window, a huge fireplace, a big comfy bed and lots of antique furniture. The en-suite had a very large shower enclosure with a great shower – no antique plumbing issues here! The room had an Alexa so we could choose music and turn off the lights just by asking – very Covid friendly. The only thing we missed was tea and coffee making facilities in the room, which had been removed as a Covid precaution.
The food cooked by Kate was fabulous. The evening three course menu offered a variety of choice, every dish sounding mouth-wateringly good. I couldn’t resist the cheese souffle on our first night, it was the best I’ve every had. So good, I had it again the second night. The food was cooked to perfection and accompanied by home grown veg. The dining room had a long table which enabled us to enjoy the company of the other guests whilst maintaining a safe social distance. Christopher introduced everyone at dinner and the conversation flowed.
The breakfast menu was extensive, and again delicious, Kate really is a superb cook, and was beautifully served in the breakfast room on stunning china.

A tardy but very grateful thank you for your kind words. You're right - even the smallest room isn't... small. We haven't stopped during lockdown with making improvements, decorating, gardening and doing small building projects. Please come back soon. Christopher

We have just stayed overnight at Old Church Farm the evening meal was very good: 3 courses cooked to perfection - the wine list could not be faulted and the full English breakfast was excellent.
The room we had our room Badminton ( Room 3 ) was well appointed, the bed was very comfortable- everything was very clean and tidy. Fresh milk in the room for the tea was a nice touch.
Christopher the owner could not have been more helpful and sociable ( not in an obtrusive way )
The stay was indeed value for money and if we were ever in the area again we would have no hesitation in staying there again.

This small family run hotel was an excellent find. The hospitality from Christopher and the food prepared by his wife were exceptional. He was very attentive, nothing was too much trouble and he organised champagne and flowers in the room on arrival for my husbands birthday. The menu changed daily which meant you could eat in the hotel each night and experience high quality food cooked using locally sourced produce. The desserts were divine (chocolate roulade and hazelnut meringue cake) Ordering breakfast online/in advance meant you could still enjoy all the things you come to expect on a get away, but served in a safe way without the need for the buffet. The room we stayed in was spacious and elegant. A small and intimate hotel and very covid safe. We would highly recommend it!

We chose the Old Church Farm for several reasons, its location is great, close to Bristol but also close to Cotswolds and Bath, all of which were on our to do list. The previous reviews were great and we felt very welcome although there are security cameras installed and so as soon as we arrived back our host was at our door, this was a little odd. Our room was very spacious but it felt a little tired or unloved, for example the lamp shade fraying, some faded upholstery, mould in the shower, carpet in the bathroom etc. There is a restuarant on site but only open Friday and Saturday nights, we were made to feel a little guilty that we didn't eat there although our host was very helpful in providing recommendations for dining options close by. Breakfast was extra, they had a good drinks menu but there was a corkage charge for byo drinks, all very strange. What was most disappointing was the state of the grounds. We selected this B&B due to the photos in the reviews, beautiful lawns and gardens. We were dreaming of the classic English summer experience, taking drinks on the beautiful lawn, enjoying the English summer and countryside. Sadly this was not the case, gardens and surrounds had not been maintained. Overall it has great potential but just needs some TLC to get it up to the standard of other B&Bs that we have enjoyed on this trip in other locations.

Dear Bruce, As yours is the only review for us to not have received 5 stars I have taken time in my response in order to remain calm at what I deem to be totally unfair and misleading. Your title is a sneering, back-handed compliment. You seem to have an issue about our Ring doorbell camera alerting me when someone is at the door. Our normal clientele appreciate the welcome back to the house and to be asked if they need anything. Your room is a thousand years old but it is has never scored less than 10/10 on cleanliness. During your 3 night stay you disabled the bathroom extractor fan (at a time when it was hot and rainy) so the couple of spots of mould that developed on the caulk of the shower doesn't surprise me. Having read your comments I immediately went to replace the frayed lampshade but didn't find one in your room. I inspected the other lampshades in the property and none of them were frayed either. I enlisted other customers to help in case I was missing something but they told me that everything is 'perfect'. There is NOT a restaurant on site and never has been. We are a guest house and not open to the public. You chose not to read our web site, booking confirmation message and pre-arrival messages that stipulate what we offer. At the time we were offering breakfasts daily and evening meals on a Friday and Saturday evening (subject to 24 hours notice as everything is cooked fresh). You had booked the room only rate so it should not have come as a surprise that breakfast was extra. Yes, there is a corkage charge if you want to bring your own wine. We are fully licensed and the law dictates that we serve the drinks to our customers or we could lose our license. We provide glasses, ice bucket (if needed), crisps and nuts. Try taking your own drink to a pub or most licensed restaurants in the UK and see what they say. When you arrived on the 6th July we had suffered from a truly appalling summer with continuous rain. It is not advised to cut the lawns in the rain or when they are wet and the weather remained unsettled during your stay. I am sorry about this but I do not feel responsible for the English weather. At no point during your stay did you give me any indication that you were not happy. On the contrary, reviewing the Ring doorbell footage of when you left your wife said that everything was excellent and that you hoped to come back. Please don't.

If you're looking for personal care and attention then this is a great place to stay. Host/owner Christopher attends to your every need. This small hotel is sumptuously decorated in style and both private and communal rooms are tastefully appointed. The food is everything you would expect from Kate - a cordon bleu chef. This is their home and you are made to feel very welcome.
The location is off the beaten track yet convenient for local amenities. Our room was delightful and the well appointed bathroom had the best power shower I have ever experienced. We shall be back!

Stayed there in my own and was made to feel at home, friendly knowledgable host and the most amazing food. All the rooms are tastefully decorated and so steeped in history but with all mod cons. Bathroom was excellent as was the comfortable bed. Good internet access and echo installations in rooms not that I wanted to use them, it’s so peaceful. A place you want to return to.

We were looking for a hotel which would give us somewhere to relax in comfortable luxurious surroundings whilst being ideal to explore this area of the country. The Old Church was perfect.
Our room was large, well appointed, clean and very comfortable and this standard was maintained throughout the hotel. Breakfast had many options with local and home made produce and was excellent. Dinner gives a good choice from an imaginative menu and is not to be missed.
This is a five bedroom small hotel and carries a premium but for us it was worth every penny. It’s enhanced by the owner Chris who establishes a calm relaxed air about the place and nothing is too much trouble.

I rarely feel compelled to write reviews but I am writing this after only 2.5 hours of being here.
This hotel is quite simply wonderful.
I am staying in the Alverston Suite on business and the view from this room is something to be seen to be appreciated.
The proprietor Christopher has been nothing but warm and accommodating since I arrived.
My dinner was prepared just as I had asked- and nothing seems like it’s too much trouble.
The most exquisite bathtub awaits before a lovely early night for me however I can’t possibly go to sleep until it gets dark- I don’t want to miss a second of the beautiful view from my room ❤️

What do you do when you find the perfect location for a few nights away, do you keep it a secret so you can go back, or do you tell the world then find rebooking might be difficult? We stayed with Christopher and Kate in early June (which was on the recommendation of friends) and after having to change our dates several times around the every changing COVID-19 restrictions, we were not disappointed. Trying to coordinate room 7 availability with the welding course my wife was attending could have been a challenge, but Christopher managed to deliver. From the moment we arrived until we left Christopher was the perfect host and the food that Kate created and served really was 5 star and deserves Michelin recognition. It really felt we were guests in a friends country house, we could fault nothing. We will be back!!

Thanks Dennis & Barbara - I understand the dilemma of shooting oneself in the foot by giving a positive review so we are very grateful that you have taken the trouble to do so. I hope to see you both again soon (as you know Room 7 is now booked until November so it would have to be one of our other rooms - but we don't have a bad one!). Best wishes, Christopher

Don't go there because if you do, we may not be able to get in next time.
This place is the perfect escape from the strains and stresses of everyday life, yet an easy journey from the motorway thus having great connectivity to Bristol, Bath and the surrounding areas.
Covid precautions were thorough yet unobtrusive and well explained, which made us feel comfortable from the start.
Accommodation is spotlessly clean, food is outstanding and the hospitality offered was warm, friendly and informed.
In summary we slept well, ate well and feel well as a result of our stay.
