Looking for somewhere to stay for a night near Bibbiena, we check out TripAdvisor and spot Hotel La Torricella at Poppi. Looks good and has excellent reviews. The setting is superb, the accommodation first rate and the staff extremely friendly, very helpful and most welcoming. We stayed in one of the rooms overlooking the castle on the hill at Poppi. This is a hotel that we will definitely return to.

If you can, book the rooms that offer a nice view on the castle. Waking up won't be a problem anymore ! The rooms are clean, without excessive decoration. The shower in my room had a defective window, but still, taking a shower was easy and pleasant.
The breakfast could be a bit better, in terms of quality and assortment. But still, a good place.

I stay at La Torricella at least twice a year because I have a business associate in the area. Small family hotel. Good people. The hotel is situated on the top of a hill which offers the visitor a wonderful view of the castle and the old city. Room rates are very reasonable and the hotel offers a discount to business visitors. Breakfast is quite rich and it includes several local cakes which are delicious. Food at restaurant is always fresh and tasteful at very good prices. Artisan ice cream. Do try it !! The real thing!! Always happy to be there.

As experienced free travellers, we are used to the artistic impression that some hotel owners apply to their room descriptions and images. However, the artistic description of the "comfort rooms" in this hotel has been taken to a higher level. Even the title of the room we were presented with was an insult to our sensibilities, there is no comfort in this hotels "comfort rooms"

We arrived at the hotel early evening, tired after a long drive and ready for a good meal in the restaurant. First impressions were good. Great location, easy free parking, attractive hotel building and a pleasant looking restaurant. We checked in at reception and were given our key to our "comfort room" !!!!! which was on the first floor. The lift was large and clean and we proceeded along the long corridor to our room!

To say that the images of our room were unrepresentative of reality, would be a good description of what we faced when we opened the door. The room and en'suite were staggeringly small. The double bed had just one bed side table and there was a single antiquated light over the centre of the bed. The wall sockets were so old that in order to make them work, the plug had to be wedged in place. The floor is quarry tiled in style. There was no rug on the floor, there were no wall decorations of any sort. This was a thoroughly unpleasant place to be.

The en'suite area which was the shape and size of a large cupboard with a recessed shower area so small that it was impossible to bend over to clean below knee height without opening the improvised door. The shower water oozed onto the en'suite floor area which was dangerous. There was also a 6 inch step between the bedroom and en'suite which is positively lethal if you are not concentrating. The TV was very small and the limited furniture was old, dull, and overbearing. There is no fire escape from the first floor and this hotel would be condemned in its current state if it were in the UK

As we were tired and hungry, we made the decision to eat in the restaurant and get some sleep before confronting reception the next morning. The restaurant serves good food, the staff were polite and professional. The breakfast was about average in quality and choice.

We had heard of the of the phrase "bait room" used in the hotel industry but had never experienced it. We believe that the room we were sold was very likely a "bait room". By that we mean it was a room that is given to the weary traveller that is so unfit for purpose that they pay for an upgrade.

Having made our complaint we were indeed offered an upgrade to a room in the hotel annex at a cost of 20 euros a night extra. As we were on just a 3 night stay, we accepted rather than move on and through gritted teeth we remained polite and courteous, throughout the remainder of our stay. We paid our bill in full

As far as we could tell, all guests during our stay were in the annex and it is our opinion that this hotel makes a lot of money from upgrades,

We will never return to this hotel

If I would write only about the restaurant then it is perfect. It is comfortable, food is great, view excellent, service very good. Maybe english not so perfect but anyway it is wroth to go.
You can have very nice dinner. Even the brakfast is top quality what is not so obvious in Italy.

Problem is the hotel. It start with the comunication with some perosn. Than the size of the rooms (in the main building) are extremly small. But it is nothing compare to the toilets. Size and equipemnt are terrible. I spent there several times. It is increadible samll. Shower are dificult to be use by single person. Equipment is old, partially not working. Very poor. Light in the room also is poor levvel. Cleaning is ok.

To be honest the extra building have rooms on completly different level. There is a space and it is much better done. It is a pity that the main building is not renovated in the hotel part.

Stayed here during a conference at the castle in Poppi.
I was looking for something out of town, quiet, comfortable and with a good restaurant nearby; La Torricella fits all these. In fact it surpassed everything I was expecting, for the price I have stayed nowhere finer. Sure, Tuscany itself has a large part to play in the experience, but the food here, the level of comfort and the service (cheers Licio) cannot be overstated.
I'm already booking a return visit

We stayed near Poppi 5 years ago on our honeymoon and ate several meals at Hotel La Torricella. We were passing through the area on our way to Venice and this time decided to stay one night in the hotel. The deluxe room was clean, spacious and had a beautiful view of the castle. Although it was too cold to eat on the patio, we enjoyed a delicious, leisurely dinner, with wine, after-dinner drinks...the whole deal. The entire price, including our room and breakfast, was only 120 euro! What a deal! Highly recommended. Casentino is a very underrated part of Tuscany. We love it!

About 5 years ago we had lunch one day here based on a suggestion from a local friend. The food was good, the view across the small valley to Poppi on the hill was excellent and I made a mental note that when in the area again we might stay in one of their rooms.

When I began my planning I was pleased to note that they had added a new building with 8 additional rooms. While more expensive, they are really quite fabulous for a country inn. We had a king/queen bed, a table and chairs, two futon chair/beds, a huge bathroom with shower only and two french doors opening to a full view of Poppi---Room 107. Our price was 90E. I had to telephone them for the reservation as the on line sites claimed no rooms available--not true.

Te included breakfast is very good, including croissants, cakes, jams, cereals, but no proteins. Yogurts were provided along with freshly made coffees, teas etc.

Dinners were excellent and the dining room was almost always full of regulars from the community and residents.

we would definitely stay there again.

We picked Poppi as just a stopover on the way through Tuscany. La Torricella looked good on the websites, but when we arrived, the place was fabulous. Although modern, it has maintained the Tuscan feel and the staff there were so friendky and welcoming,
Our room was spacious and immuculately clean. We also dined at the restaurant that night and it was one of the best meals of our 3 month trip and represented great value for money.
Our single regret...we only booked for one night instead of a week. We will go back there,

The Casentino is a beautiful peaceful valley in Tuscany, undiscovered by most tourists. La Torricella sits on a high point directly opposite Poppi Castle and has a panoramic view which extends to La Verna. The rooms are very comfortable, with air-conditioning and wi-fi. Food, typical of the region, is excellent. Dining outdoors in the evening, the illuminated castle, and your room only steps away--heavenly!! I have stayed here for 3-4 days every summer for the past 5 years and plan to return in 2013.
