We arrived at our holiday cottage in Bowes in the snow late on a Saturday evening, only to find that it was no longer available. Having eaten at the Ancient Unicorn before we had our fingers crossed that they might have accommodation. Luckily Simon sorted us out with a ground floor ensuite room for us and our two dogs and...

Stayed here with my husband and our dog Saturday and Sunday night. It excelled our expectations by far. Easy to find, staff member, who was really lovely Lesley I think? saw us to our room which is just opposite the bar and restaurant, which is great for it was quiet and felt very private. The rooms themselves were gorgeous, really...

We visited The Ancient Unicorn for the first time yesterday for a get-together to celebrate a family golden wedding anniversary. As soon as we walked through the door we felt at home straight away. There are open fires or wood burners in the public rooms which make the place so cosy. All the staff were friendly and welcoming. Despite being...

A hotel with charm and character, warm welcome, nice quite clean room, well cooked fresh hot meal by a Scottish Chief (bonus) nice well cooked breakfast and all at a respectable price, stayed here a few years ago and found a big improvement from my last stay, will definitely stay again.

We stayed for New Year's Eve to do a few walks and have a relaxing meal to get away from the hustle bustle and we received exactly that, perfect relaxation, you are greeted by a lovely eighteenth century building with Yorkshire stone floor and oak beams and a well stoked cast iron and stone fireplace in all downstairs bar areas...

Last week, with family and friends, I visited this "ye olde England" inn - had heard about it (new owners; restoration, etc.), but not really motivated to go. On that cold, moist evening, on a 'why not?' basis, I succumbed: a happy surprise - for all of us who'd not been recently. There is a private courtyard [parking] but the...

I stayed here with a group of six friends whilst we cycled across from coast to coast. The rooms where perfect and very bike friendly. Excellent shower which was great after a long day riding. We ate our evening meal in the pub which was busy with a good atmosphere. Breakfast was excellent. Good service and very friendly staff.
