Detailed Reviews
Lovely quaint and comfortable stay in Moulay Idriss. Not overly easy to find, as their map didn’t bring alive the frantic life of the small market and food stalls, with thronging pedestrians, through which you need to try to drive!!! We were slightly non plussed by the instructions to use a donkey if we were coming with heavy baggage (cue small light rucksack!) The guardian of the parking area made someone else move, so we could park there overnight! The donkey “taxi rank” was the far side of the stalls, not where we parked, so we never got to try that option. However there is no way to access Dar Zerhoune without climbing a fair number of steps, but it is well worth finding, and staying. Superb views over the interesting small town. Evening meal on the terrace a reasonable standard, but the breakfast was exceptionally good. Very well priced.

Definitely stay here over anywhere else.
Excellent food, heated blankets, comfortable rooms. The ladies that work here are very pleasant and informative. The location is fabulous, very easy to walk to and back from the Roman Ruins.
Oh and not to forget the amazing coffee they serve. The best stay in Morocco.

+1
I recently stayed here whilst visiting Moulay Idriss with friends. The location is lovely, the rooms are nicely decorated and the hosts were great. The dinner and breakfast were excellent. We were the only guests so I’m not sure what it is like when busy but this was a pretty, tranquil and relaxing stop on our drive around Morocco.

I'd like to have enjoyed Dar Zerhoune more than I did, as obviously the owner has put a lot of effort into it with good details like plenty of power points, wifi, freshly painted, nice looking furniture, English language books. Bedding was fine. Mattresses and seating were very hard but that is common in Morocco. it is spotless, well located and could be a good option under different circumstances than mine.
It's interesting to read the comments from people staying in winter and the efforts made to warm the place. However, I came in a hot summer and could not stay more than one night. mainly because of the heat. The roof of the central atrium has been glassed in, and if you look at the room pics you'll notice the lack of outside windows or ventilation. One 'dorm' bedroom has a window to the outside, others have doors that open into the central atrium, so no air flow. I had the impression the place had been closed up for a while, as there was also an odd acrid smell throughout. I opened the 2 upstairs doors and windows to the outside world and the odour dissipated a bit, but it was not enough ventilation to combat the intense 'greenhouse' effect of the enclosed central space. The pretty top floor salon, where I'd hoped to write, play guitar etc was too hot to sit in after about 2pm. I moved bedrooms at 1 am to a small one on the lowest floor, which was cool though still stuffy..it's below street level.
The roof terrace was too hot to use in the day. Pleasant at night, though the lights mysteriously went off after about 30 mins and wouldn't switch on again. Overall I just never found a comfortable place to 'be'.
Apart from the air situation, it's worth taking on board comments other people have made about being on their own. The teenage girl who let me in was friendly but didn't really explain anything about the town or the house except the wifi password (we had no common language). Hadjiba came unexpectedly for a few minutes at night, and in the morning to give me a basic breakfast and get paid.
I live alone at home, and there is a note in the room about it being an 'unhosted guest house' but to be honest it's a bit odd to be a guest without a host; alone in a 3 story space in a strange town with unfamiliar noises, doors banging (next door) not knowing if someone was going to suddenly arrive or not, or be there when I got back after a walk. However, if you had friends/partner with you or , or at a different time of year when you;d want to be out a lot in the day, it could be a good option.
It is not a 'cheap' option though.. I paid 400 Dirhams, bed and breakfast, which was more than twice what I ended up paying 'walk in' for a much more comfortable, hospitable and airy space elsewhere in the town. I liked Moulay Idriss and ended up staying 4 nights.

Dar Zerhoune has a great rooftop terrace from which to watch the day come and go. The meals were delicious and the rooms were comfortable. The walk to Volubilis along the upper road across the valley was pleasant and interesting. Although, it was very hot, we enjoyed the views as we walked. Of course, Volubilis is a "must see". The town itself is quiet and holy; we felt honored to walk its streets.

On the whole, we were pretty disappointed with this B&B, especially after it's high rating on trip advisor.
I should note: this is the first time I have ever given a hotel a negative rating on trip advisor. I am not a picky traveller, but this place has too many unforgiveables for me not to warn others.
First of all, the smell of our room was really foul. They have a plumbing problem and it caused the entire room to fill with sewage smell.
Second, the service was far from warm. It was the only b&b in Morocco where we felt unwanted or that we were a burden. It was such a stark contrast from the other places we stayed. We were never given a tour of the hotel, never told about check-in, check out times, never given advice on where to go in the city, etc. It was odd and felt unwelcoming.
Third, and most importantly, the hotel hooked us up with a very unscrupulous local called Rasheed. He was to be our guide if we needed one and our "go-to" guy for any Moulay Idriss related questions/help. As it turned out, we needed his help to find a ride to Casablanca. He quoted us at a ridiculous price, which he said he could not bring down. We were fairly desperate, so we accepted. He then drove us to the outskirts of Casablanca, and said that was as far as he'd take us. When we complained that the deal was for him to take us to our hotel in Casablanca, he very cheekily said "I only agreed to take you to Casablanca". He eventually agreed to pay our cab fare for the remainder of the trip to the hotel, but only after a fairly intense argument. He also tried to make us pay more than we originally agreed to.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why Dar Zehoune would associate itself with this Rasheed. He is damaging their reputation.
For the reasons listed above, I cannot recommend Dar Zehoune in Moulay Idriss.
On the plus side, the dinner was absolutely excellent and the view from the rooftop terrace magnificent.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review and I am sorry to hear that your stay was below your expectations and with that, thanks for posting that you enjoyed the dinner and the view from the terrace. As much as it is does not feel good to have negative reviews, I can only use them to make improvements so thank you for your comments. Since your stay I closed for two weeks to carry out restoration work and one of them was to resolve the issue with the smell from the drains and this is now resolved. As well as insulating and damp proofing the house. As for the service, my manager, Hajiba, was on maternity leave and she has now returned and unfortunately my replacement staff did not provide the welcome to the house as would be expected , this is improved with her return. I welcome your comments on Rachid as previously I have found him to be a good and trustworthy guide for Moulay Idriss and Volubilis. From your comments I do not want guests to have a similar experience and have acted on this. I appreciate you taking the time to post your comments and I have used these to carry out improvements to Dar Zerhoune. I do hope that we can welcome you back in the future. Rose

Totally worthwhile detour from Fes. We booked a donkey ride to Volubilis, followed by dinner. Rose was wonderfully easy and helpful and honest to deal with. After traveling around Morocco for 2.5 weeks after our visit to Dar Zerhoune, this was still one of our best experiences and Rose one of the best people we have worked with.
Rose arranged a driver to pick us up in Fes, bring us to Moulay Idriss to meet our donkeys, and ride for about 1 hour to Volubilis (while the driver waited for us at Volubilis to take us back to Dar Zerhoune, where dinner waited for us.
The driver was a delightful young man who spoke wonderful English. Very, very engaging, making the 1.5 hour (each way) drive from Fez fly by. Along the way, we saw a beautiful, lush landscape. Somehow, I thought of Morocco as dry and desertly. The reality is that the northern part of the country is truly lush and green. We saw fields of red poppies (my favorite) and our driver happily stopped for me to take some photos. Then, we arrived at Moulay Idriss and found our donkeys waiting for us. These animals are happy and shiny with good health. Only warning is that each donkey had a sort of square wooden saddle piled with blankets that you sit on. Rose had warned us that it is not the most comfortable seat and she's right. However, the experience of riding a donkey, along a lovely road, to Volubilis is an experience not to be missed!
So, we arrived at Volubilis. It was about 5 PM (Volubilis closes at 6PM during the time of our visit). There was not much of a crowd and within 1/2 hour, all the people left (just as Rose said they would) and we pretty much had the place to ourselves. What a magical feeling! The ruins amongst lush, green, cultivated fields, wild flowers blooming around one's feet, soft slanting afternoon lights bathing these ancient stones, and not another soul in sight, just the atmosphere I had hoped for. We took some fantastic photos, some of the best on our trip!
Then, we returned to our driver who took us to Dar Zerhoun for dinner, personally escorting us to the Dar so that we would not get lost. We had dinner on the roof top. The team with Dar Zerhoun made us a wonderful beef tagine and a paprika chicken (by special request from us for our picky eater teenager!). The meal came with all sorts of little messas, aubergine (yummmm!), carrot salad, cucumber, olives and loads of other deliciocities and fresh bread. We stuffed ourselves silly while we watched the sun set over the hills. After dinner, our delightful driver took us back to Fes. It was a truly fantastic day. We'll remember this day always and we hope to return soon for a longer stay. We're telling all our friends to visit here!
Love to Rose and everyone we met that night.

Everything about the place is wonderful. The accommodations are cozy, the staff are amazing, and the city is gorgeous. However, nothing compares to the surprisingly delicious food! Outside of Morocco's larger cities, it is hard to find much variety, but Rose and her staff have created a great menu full of good food with fresh ingredients. Truly, not to be missed!

Absolutely, we have our 'bake your own afternoon tea' cooking class that prepares bread and cookies in the community oven, and morocccan breads in the home, then you get to eat it all. We also have classes in making couscous, or tagines. These are at Dar Zerhoune or in a moroccan home. Please let me know what you would like to do?
Yes, we can arrange a donkey ride to Volubilis, private taxi which will wait and bring you back, or you can take a local taxi each way. Alternatively we can provide a map and information on the beat route to walk.
