This is a lovely building in a great spot. We were travelling as a group of 9 so had all the bedrooms and access to the large lounge diner and kitchen. We had a warm welcome from the owner and quickly settled in. Bedrooms were good and well equipped as was the kitchen. There was plenty of space for the 9 of us and we had a great time. It was a brilliant spot for us to attend the Braemar highland gathering(just a short drive away) We would definitely recommend staying here, and wished we could have stayed longer.

We managed to get away for three nights between travel restrictions and were delighted to find this 'home-from-home'. From a beautifully set Christmas table (with gifts of crackers that the children loved) to the spotlessly clean kitchens and bathrooms, we really appreciated it all. There are books and toys and lots of interesting things in the house and then the grounds lead on to quiet little paths through the woods to explore. The close proximity of the Highlander Bakehouse was just an added bonus. We will definitely be back! Thank you Alistair.

On every front this was excellent accommodation. The location for Deeside is perfect. The rooms are spotless with well kitted out kitchens. The living and dining space suit a large family gathering. Plan to return when things settle down.

Been staying at Alistairs for 3 years now when we go to the Braemar Gathering, and would never stay anywhere else. The place is so comfy , Alistair is the most welcoming friendly host you could ever hope for. We stay in his home , and it's like a home from home . Everytime we go there is another project underway from building a beautiful wooden gazebo, a stunning hand built bbq and now a giant chess board !! From the breakfast he tries to feed us , to the beer and gin he leaves in the fridge, it's amazing ! You wouldn't find a more warm , kind hearted man , who is so well respected throughout the area. Just want to keep it our secret hideaway though !

This was an excellent cottage with everything you could need in it from a fully equipped kitchen and laundry room to games and log fires. You could travel here and just need to bring your food and drink. Centrally located for visiting surrounding area. We even saw the Queen at Crathie Kirk and inspecting the troops at Balmoral. We had two dogs with us who just loved all the great walks. We only went as far as Aboyne which was great as we just wanted a relaxing holiday. Walking during the day and playing board games at night. The only thing we felt could be improved was a higher fence needed around the car park area as my cockapoo managed to jump fence on a few occasions. Saying that we wouldn’t hesitate to come back again. Thanks to Gary and Tina for the biscuits and a beautiful cottage.

We stayed here as a group of 5 families. Was a lovely quiet place. Kid's had loads of freedom to play. Alistair left a lovely welcome hamper with milk, bread, wine, butter and various other thing's. Beds were comfortable. Would definitely stay here again.

The accomodation is great. I would highly recommend it. We rented three bedrooms with on suite bathrooms and were also given use of a large lounge and kitchen. All spotlessly clean. When we arrived there was also a welcome pack of groceries and a lovely bottle of wine. Alistair the owner is also very friendly and goes out of his way to accomodate all your needs.

Great value for the money! Lodging - self-catering (no breakfast inc.) We booked 'all' three 'stable' rooms inc. the common area for 9 people (2 couples, 4 boys & dad), and then hired someone to cook for us a proper Brit breakfast each morning and a few dinners to come back to after some highland trekking. Great central location, very quiet, even though it's a bit of a drive wherever we went N, W, S, E. The lodging is about half-way between the two small towns of Ballater and Baemar. Great price as we booked the whole week and got a really good discount for the week with all the 'stable' rooms on the ground floor. The owner told us that the last night that he had already booked one of the rooms so we were prepared to double-up in someone else's room. However, the owner was gracious enough to offer one of the rooms in the house next door for the last night at no extra cost. We were greeted with a bottle of wine, some tasty locally made shortbread and some minimal groceries to get us by on our arrival. The common area is very nice with tv, wifi, washer & dryer - if you need it in the country. The owner has two even-tempered border collies that greeted us every morning and evening - wanting us to throw their stick to run & fetch. I had to run diversion before we set off in the car otherwise they'd be circling the car. Plenty of parking is available. Generally, the lodgings was adequate, although, as noted in another review, none of the windows open in any of the 'stable' rooms, and they all face the courtyard parking area - so no view. If the rooms are hot from the day then your only choice is leaving the door open and hope for a breeze. Absolutely no maid, linen service, or rubbish service for the entire week - so we cleaned the kitchen and emptied the rubbish daily. It wouldn't have hurt to hire someone to at least empty the rubbish and cleanup a bit since there are nine people using the common area. Note: apparently there are proper bins to put food, recycles and the rest of the rubbish in BUT these weren't clearly identified and we weren't aware of the food bin until ~3 days into the stay as our cook reveled to us. The cook did some of the cleaning-up and she doesn't even own the property? As I said, we hired a cook, so don't expect that there's a cook available - she said, 'she did this as a favour to the owner'. Thank you Alastair again for arranging her, she was an absolute angel. We can't say how wonderful our cook was - she is fabulous, very accommodating to our needs, and then unbeknownst to us donated her services to a local charity other than the food costs. Note: if anyone tells you to go to the bakery just up the road, then be prepared to be amazed at 'the box'! We heard sheep faintly bah'n their way across the field and found out that they happen to rambling right next to the property which made it even more country-fied for us. Also, there's a table-tennis table for the kids to play on and a hibachi for us to do a BBQ one afternoon. The house next to us and behind the stables is in a bit of a mess as the owner is building. We had a few hiccups on our stay: 1. the property alarm kept going off in the common area. 2. one of the couples got locked out of their room with the keys left inside -really could you do something (remove the Yale locks) that prevents us from doing that? We were all up ~2am in the middle of the night with the frantic couple as they hadn't taken their medication and they were locked out of their room. We had to wake up the owner and get him to unlock the door. Now I would have given this property Absolute 'Excellent' ratings had the owner not given a back-handed compliant about 'Americans' after we left. Assuming that someone in our party was smoking in the rooms. This was all because the smoker left his fag-ends in the rubbish can, after he went down to the main street to have a smoke. Being considerate, he wasn't about to throw the fag-ends in the street and so disposed them in the room's rubbish can as there wasn't a 'butt' can to put them in. Furthermore, no-one else in the rooms would have tolerated smoking! Note: only 2 of the 9 were actually born Americans so it's inappropriate to group us all as 'Americans' and then slag the yanks down. I would definitely recommend staying here again despite the couple of issues and misunderstanding we had - because it is a great value, central location, good accommodations!

Self catering tomidhu steadings Crathie. Stunning place! Definitely recommended I stayed here so I could visit family who live in Crathie a stones throw from Balmoral castle . This area is beautiful! Alistair who owns and runs Tomidhu is lovely and really takes care of you, nothing was too much trouble. I stayed in the family sized room nearest to the house, my parents stayed too , we had access to a living room , well appointed kitchen and dining room, full facilities including washing machine , cooker etc. My room was spotless , my double bed was so comfortable too, my bathroom had everything I needed including shampoo, soap etc the shower was great too! I even had a small fridge in my room which came in really handy! Tomidhu is so easy to find being just off the A93 and within easy walking distance of Crathie church, Balmoral castle, the Royal Lochnagher distillery , it's a ten minute car journey to Braemar and the opposite way is the village of Ballater famous for its butchers used by and obviously recommended by Royalty! I would definitely recommend Tomidhu steadings if your looking for a stunning peaceful setting , very clean and well appointed self catering holiday within easy distance from some amazing places to visit! I will definitely be returning later this year!
