Wonderful warm welcome from family run business, town full of history and friendly people, excellent local restaurants and bars, order the local wine at 5 Euros a litre. Charming part of Italy away from beaten track, close to Lago Montecchio

A delightful sojourn! This hotel is modest in price (65 euro per night including breakfast) and furnishings (it's rated 2 stars), but the quiet accommodations are perfectly comfortable and the owners will make you feel like family (they live there). Hotel Orazio (named for the Roman poet Horace, a favorite son of Venosa) is in a 17th century Palazzo in... More

The hotel is a 500 year old palace. It was a pure pleasure to stay here. The owners who run the hotel are also very helpful and friendly. The only minus in this palace is a poor breakfast and that rooms are a little small We would really like to come back here one day.

Depressing breakfast came from packets. Even the toast was factory shrink wrapped. Flavourless coffee and tea from cheap bags. At other towns in Basilicata the breakfast was much better. The modern glass entrance integrated well with this mansion.

We didn't book in advance and missed out on a triple room but the extremely helpful host provided us with a double and single for a very reasonable price. Rooms were comfortable and spotlessly clean and the breakfast was excellent (fresh cornetti). The hosts were charming and very helpful. There is off-road parking and the set-menu deal with the restaurant... More

We were met with kindness and great patience by the proprietresses of this hotel, we speak no Italian, and they speak no English. That being said we were given an amazing room with a huge terrace that overlooked the town and countryside, and they made sure that we were well taken care of. You can tell this is a Family... More

We came in November, which made everything very cold and rainy. But Hotel Orazio was very welcoming and the three ladies who run it are a dream. They were there to help us with anything we needed, but they also let us just do our thing. The rooms are very basic, and ours was somewhat cold because we asked to... More

I arrived at the Orazio unusually for me, without having formally agreed a room rate and had I realised that the price for one of the better rooms was E65 including breakfast, I might have held fewer expectations. Its well situated , though I have to say that Venosa isn't the most interesting town in the world, and virtually all... More

Venosa, in northern Basilicata, is famous as the hometown of the Latin poet Horace, so it seems appropriate to stay at the Hotel Orazio (Italian for Horace), an old palazzo, once home to The Knights of Malta. It's very basic - but also very well located down a cobbled road off the main square - and it's like staying with... More
