A stunning pub with 10 rooms nestled in the picturesque countryside of West Berkshire, where the pace of life is just that little bit slower. Simple, unfussy, Michelin rated food, ten luxurious bedrooms, award winning real ales, roaring log fires and a quite beautiful walled beer garden await, all within easy access of Newbury, Reading, Heathrow and the M4. We are child friendly, dog friendly and accessible to all. We do hope you love the place as much as we do, and hope you will come and visit us very soon

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We booked this hotel as we were impressed with the gluten free menu and we were definitely not disappointed. The food here is amazing and as a coeliac, it is rare to find anywhere with such a good choice. The room was spacious and had everything you need for a short stay. The village is quiet, but the hotel is in an ideal place for exploring the local area.

Very disappointed that the staff were very unfriendly and made me feel quite unwelcome. Called ahead to politely see if the room was ready and said I was aware it was 3pm check in but just wanted to check as we were about to pass by so could drop off bags if so- and the man on the phone was very abrupt and just replied with 'it's 3pm'. That was it ! Not even a- we look forward to seeing you later or anything. Check in was much the same. No smile from anyone. Dinner - the man serving was so miserable - again not a smile throughout the whole meal. The room was nice - although bed not big enough for us. Felt quite tight. And the room was definitely big enough for a super king. The lady serving breakfast was lovely though. The only friendly person we encountered. Breakfast itself wasn't great- sour dough does not make good toast ! It's so crunchy it made my jaw hurt! A nice home made loaf of bread would make much better toast. Serving 2 small slices of crunchy sour dough toast on a huge wooden board is rather overkill! There was nothing suitable for children. They could really do with serving something more child friendly like offering some cereal. Especially as the 'toast' was not edible for even adult teeth let alone children's. Perhaps they think children are not welcome at this hotel and that's why they were unfriendly to us. Our children are very well behaved. We've taken the children to many hotels including the four seasons for afternoon tea- if they can manage to accommodate families there, then I don't see why the Royal oak can't. A shame.

This little country hotel is absolutely wonderful. The rooms are comfortable, food is excellent and the service is exceptional. I would stay here any opportunity I have. I have been visiting for the last 30 years and seen many changes, all excellent.

Had a really lovely dinner, sleep and breakfast here. The food is excellent, the rooms are well appointed, spotless and a good size with quality fixtures and furnishings. Menu was attractive and everything we ate was superbly cooked. AND the service was excellent at both dinner and breakfast which, where we live in SW London, is a real rarity. Will be back :)

I booked for me and my partner to have a night away, i couldn’t of had a better experience! It felt like no request was a problem and staff were so happy, friendly and attentive. As for the setting, the room was luxurious and didn’t miss any details! Breakfast in the orangery was a nice juxtaposition from our cosy dinner by the fire the night before. This place has bucketfuls of character& staff who clearly have a lot of experience. Thank you, we will be back!

We booked this place for a one night stay just before we started a road trip to the UK from Portugal. So very glad we did as it is a lovely pub/ hotel with nice rooms and excellent service. The food was fantastic and. we were recommended several dishes by the restaurant manager and none of them disappointed. Even the pizza we had for lunch was first class and one of the best we’d had….ever!! Highly recommended!

What a lovely pub! The staff were so friendly and efficient, made us feel so welcome and let us check in to our room (a lovely little cottage with an outside area) early so we could relax and get ready for the wedding we were attending. So much nicer than most hotels I have stayed in. Thanks to you all

We stayed here with my daughter and her partner, we had the cottage on the side of the pub. Both rooms were done to a very high standard, the ground floor room had access to a private garden which was lovely. The amenities in the room were great tea coffee all mod cons soft towels, nice smelly bath accessories, usb point fresh laundered sheets comfy bed. We have breakfast included and was wonderful, nice variety and lovely clean and smart dining room. Best of all we thought was the open view kitchen where we could watch our breakfast being made. We would highly recommend this pub and we will be returning again, Thank you Royal Oak xx The McKnight Family

Great visit as always! This wonderful bed and breakfast is located in a fairytale village in the English countryside. Great rooms, food and service. We especially like Andrea. She is always there to help up with all of our needs. We’ve been going there every year for five years and plan to continue this tradition.
