Exceeded our expectations this weekend. We stayed here on Saturday night and a diferent hotel on Ullswater Sunday - just checked out of Ullswater hotel today (sdee other review).

The hotel we expected to be somewhere between a travel lodge and a YHA however we were pleasently surprised by the attentive and friendly booking and check in process including the cleanliness of the rooms and the offer of basic breakfast.

When in the lakes you want a great location in between Windermere and Keswick, then this is an ideal base for you. St Johns in the Vale also a lovely location.

The bonus of course, ouir little Border Terrier Alfie came along too.

First time visitor to the Lodge in the Vale and have to say I was very apprehensive given the current Covid climate but they took the proper precautions in terms of hygiene to put our minds at ease.

The location is only a few minutes away from neighbouring towns which is ideal for shopping, eating etc. They do have a cafe on site which closes at 9/9.30pm so vending machines or a mini fridge in the rooms may be an idea for night owls such as myself but otherwise can’t complain.

The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly throughout and although our room could have done with a lick of paint in some places or a bit more attention to detail in the cleaning, it really wasn’t a bit deal for me.

The only bug bare for me though was the lack of phone/internet signal which understandably for the area they are in, it’s scarce everywhere but there is WiFi available but it did keep disconnecting- again, many visitors are probably not visiting to use the Internet when there’s such great scenery about!

Overall we enjoyed our stay and if we were back in the area, we’d consider this place as an option

Firstly let me say this is a great hotel to stay in if you are exploring the lakes for a night, and are travelling with your dog!

The floors laminated, and wet room type bathroom, is ideal when your walking clothes are wet.

Tea/Coffee/Biscuits, are a nice touch (we did buy more from the shop is Keswick, although they stated we could ask for more, we didn't want to intrude).

We managed to sign into Netlix which was great, although the wifi generally was slow, however this isn't really a problem for us, as we wanted to escape wifi and phone signal!

I would mention, the room is small (which we knew about, but still was shocked just how small it was) and on reflection, me and my partner both said we probably wouldn't have stayed in the same room for that price, if it was just me and him. It was great because of having the dog, but did feel there were knocks and scrapes in the room, that would have been a problem had it have been just the two of us for a weekend away!

Location is great for exploring the lakes...We went into Keswick and Windermere, on the days we were staying.

Cannot comment on breakfast, because of having the dog we decided to get up and check out, and head to a local pub where we could take the dog with us.

First and foremost, the staff here are excellent, very helpful, great to chat to and lovely people in general!
Just back from a 3 night break and had a great stay.
Hotel is very relaxed, nice and clean and the continental breakfast is enough - you can go to The Kings Head (1 minute drive or 15 minute walk - take head torch at night) for a cooked breakfast for £2.50 extra.
Very dog friendly (we took 2), there are no off limit areas like some hotels.
10 minutes drive to Keswick (taxi roughly £13-15), 20 minutes drive to Ambleside so in a great location.
The closest pub/restaurant is The Kings Head, not much else in the local area but that suited us. You can get sandwiches, cakes and bottles of beer/wine/prosecco in the hotel coffee shop which is open fairly late.
If you are planning on walking the fells, The Kings Head will do a packed lunch if ordered the day before.
I would 100% stay here again and probably will early in the new year.

A friend and I stopped at The Lodge in the Vale for three nights in mid September. We were very excited for our stay given the fantastic reviews we had read and the 4 star rating. However, following check in we were nothing but disappointed from there on. A few immediate observations were:
1. the room was actually very tight for two people to comfortably move around

2.the room was absolutely freezing up on entry

3. The kettle in the room had a chunk of plastic broken on it and old water left in from the previous guests I assume

These were just the immediate things we noticed. As the day went on and we used the room more it became apparent that the shower was far too tiny for either of us to use without bashing a limb whilst trying to wash. I am a 5’6 and size 10 female and it was a real struggle to have a shower comfortably without having to constrict my movements. So I did wonder how anyone that happened to be larger than myself would have got on trying to shower. Anyway the shower wasn’t the biggest issue, for me it was the pillows. My goodness I have NEVER experienced such an uncomfortable, hard pillow in my life. In the three nights we were there I had VERY little sleep due to the pillows being SO uncomfortable, it was unbearable.
I did actually ask at reception (when I could eventually get hold of a member of staff) for a spare pillow thinking it may help. However, instead the member of staff looked at me like I had three heads and said “we don’t really have spares of things”. I was shocked. Anyhow, a little later the member of staff did knock on the door with an extra pillow, although this didn’t help, the pillows are just simply too hard.

The staff are like rare species of birds at this establishment. You try finding one or when you have found them you try getting them to help you. They are quite rude and unwilling to assist with anything we found. Apart from one member of staff who was actually very helpful and even recommended some places for us to go.

The breakfast at the Lodge in the Vale was a tiny selection. We were perhaps expecting a bit too much from this place. It seemed to be that they were trying to under cater maybe to avoid waste? I’m not sure. But what I do know is that it was a disappointing selection of items and you felt like you had to be conservative with what you put on your plate in order to save some for other guests.

One last thing to mention and perhaps this is a given with the location but the wifi was the most awful thing I’ve used in my life. I understood phone signal wouldn’t work but I thought the hotel wifi would be accessible from the room atleast. Anyway, we were quite mistaken. The only way to use the wifi was to go and stand right by the reception desk and even then it was hit and miss. So if you were travelling and hoping to get a bit of work done or wanted to stay in touch with friends or family, forget about it.

All in all, my friend and I would never stop here again.

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here in January for a weekend break, we were looking for something cheap and cheerful and The Lodge in the Vale exceeded our expectations! It was very clean and modern inside, the beds were comfy and we found it was the perfect stay for wanting to explore the lakes.
We decided to eat in the pub just along the road (The King’s ahead) which served amazing food in big portions and you get discount!!
Breakfast was continental and was lovely.
We will definitely be using this hotel next time we visit the lakes!!

Our room was pretty much on a main road, a very busy road where you could hear every car go past so our sleep wasn’t the best. On top of that, the towel rail in the bathroom was very noisy with the heat coming through which couldn’t be switched off. They advertise WiFi but this isn’t the case, it’s extremely slow IF you manage to get it to work..which isn’t the best when you want to look up some hikes or trails. They also advertise breakfast but you have to drive to a different building to get to it. However the room was clean, the location was good, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful! Just a shame as we were looking forward to our stay but we were unfortunately disappointed.

I found the rooms were too small, dark and outdated. Bathroom was old and could do with a proper clean as skirtings were dirty. Area is beautiful but out the way, no hot breakfast but food provided was more than suitable. As it’s not near any pubs or places for food, Keswick is the nearest town. As it’s not ideal I feel the lodge could provide snacks or refreshments alcoholic or non beyond 9pm for those who do do not wish to leave for town but just stay up a little longer. Wifi connection was terrible but granted this is probably beyond staff ability given the location and surrounding hills etc so I am sympathetic to that. Staff were very friendly. Wouldn’t recommend for children as it’s very close to the road so not the safest but also because there isn’t much to do. Perfect for a stop over for a night. Certainly not worth £120 a night would pay around £60 at best.

Superb staff Floria and her associates couldn't do enough for us they froze I cool blocks help us with questions about the local area and taxis.
The rooms are small but have lots of storage, tea and coffee facilities, hairdryers. The lodge is in a very nice position with views of the mountains a small busy road outside but after 11 p.m. it was quiet until about 7 a.m. They offered a buffet breakfast or full cooked options were included in the Booking.com price and you can drive to that one minute away.
We also went to the King's Head for an evening meal, which was excellent.
Thanks for 3 great nights away. After this crazy period, it was literally a breath of fresh air!

I had a lovely four nights stay here with my partner. The place is situated in a great spot to travel around the Lake District with most points of interest being up to a half hour drive away or closer. The room is basic but modern furnished with; a shower, smart TV, double bed, cupboard, safe and a kettle. No shampoo, body wash or hand wash is provided. The breakfast is the morning is continental only but has many options (cereal, panini, toasts, fruits, cheeses and ham). If you want a cooked breakfast, a day before you can ask for arrangements to be made to visit a pub/guest house up the road (couple minutes drive) - we did not do this so unable to provide feedback. You are able to buy lunch and drinks in the cafe throughout the day. The staff at the lodge were all helpful and friendly. The place is well kept - organised, clean & tidy. There is plenty of parking on the premises also. For dinner your going to want to eat out as there is not cooking facilities. The nearest town is Keswick (10 minute drive) where plenty of restaurants/eateries can be found. I would highly recommend booking places to eat there prior to visiting the area as they all get fully booked quickly. I would certainly visit again, the only reason why this isn’t a 5 stars is purely the price. At being just over £100 a night it is on the expensive side, it’s in my mind worth around the £80 a night mark but I appreciate I have stayed in high season.

You can walk over High fell and walk into Keswick that way.Need good walking map of the area or GPS.Much nicer walk than walking along the busy road and get the bus back.

Hi there, I just wanted to enquire, is 2 nights enough or would you recommend 3 or more? Thanks
Answer from Jean M

I would recommend three nights, but it depends on the time of year you go and how far you want to explore the Lake District. We've been going there for years, both in our caravan and in bed & breakfast accommodation, but we never tire of it. To us it is lovely in all seasons.

Hi Karen The King's Head is 0.85 miles from the Lodge. It takes about 20 minutes to walk there. As other guests have mentioned, a torch is a good idea, there are no street lights. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Regards The Lodge

Hi The coffee shop is open daily from breakfast until 9.30pm, serving teas, coffees, cakes, snacks, paninis and alcoholic drinks. We don't offer full evening meals, the nearest gasto pub/restaurant is only half a mile away (The King's Head Inn), Alternatively, Keswick is 5 miles away. Please let me know if you require any further information. Kind Regards Lana Manager
