Know before you go
With a name that refers to the honey-colored stone used to build its villages, the Cotswolds spans five counties and boasts some of England's most impressive country houses, castles, and cottages, some of which have been reborn as hotels. Gloucester, the largest city, is a prime shopping destination, with many independent boutiques in the historic Westgate Quarter. Art lovers will adore staying near Broadway's many galleries and museums, while history buffs can explore more than 350 historic buildings in Tewkesbury. Stroud's boho-chic vibe is best suited for foodies looking to taste their way through town, while Bath is a relaxing place to stay thanks to the natural mineral hot springs.

This summertime retreat transforms itself into a quaint, cozy winter destination once the weather turns chilly. Snow isn’t common in the Cotswolds, but bring along a warm, waterproof jacket because rain is likely to be in the forecast.

Running for most of December, the Spectacle of Light illuminates 1,000-year-old Sudeley Castle with a colorful carpet of lights, flickering flames, and gushing water features.

Forget the cold while sipping tasty ales by a log fireplace at one of the area’s many pubs, or opt for a whiskey or hot toddy at Cotswolds Distillery.

Looking to knock out your holiday shopping? Several towns host holiday markets, including Bath, Cheltenham, Chipping Campden and Cirencester.

If snow does begin to fall, consider a walk in the undulating Malvern Hills, or ride a sled down the slopes around 19th-century Broadway Tower.

Mild weather means a calendar full of first-rate festivities in the Cotswolds. And kids are still in school, so you’ll skip the crush of summer crowds.

The Cotswolds has its own version of “tiptoeing through the tulips”: Snowdrops and daffodils catch the lingering sunlight at Batsford Arboretum, while purplish bluebells fill the meadows at Gloucestershire Wildlife Nature Reserves.

In early spring, place your bets on the thoroughbreds at Cheltenham Racecourse during the Cheltenham Festival, where the lavish prize money is second only to the Grand National.

As the temperatures start to rise, you can kayak, paddle board, and generally splish-splash around in your choice of the 180 lakes at Cotswold Water Park.

Summer’s dependably warm weather makes it the best time to explore the rolling green hills of the Cotswolds. Stretch your legs on nature walks and take in the season’s flora and fauna, including 12 species of orchids and half a dozen types of flamingo.

Stroll along any section of the 102-mile Cotswold Way, a trail that begins in Chipping Campden and extends all the way to Bath. A favorite is the Cleve Common area when it’s blanketed with summer wildflowers.

Trying to get kids off their devices? Bring them to Cotswold Wildlife Park and Garden, where rhinos, giraffes, crocodiles, lemurs, and other exotic animals will hold their attention. Even better: These critters are easier to spot in the bright summer sunshine.

In early June, Cotswold Lavender Farm near Broadway provides free aromatherapy for the entire region. Walk through the violet gardens and take home a handmade tincture from the gift shop.

Autumn is the best time of year to catch a glimpse of the region’s beloved chocolate-box cottages, especially with orange and gold leaves providing the perfect backdrop. Brisk temperatures and occasional rain mean you’ll encounter fewer crowds.

People line up at Westonbirt Arboretum every autumn to see its array of maple trees showing off their famed fall colors. Trust us, it’s worth it to see them up-close.

All aboard! The vintage railcars of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway offer views of the Malverns to the west and the Cotswolds to the east.

Sharp-eyed Harry Potter fans will recognize the medieval stonework of Gloucester Cathedral. The 14th-century cloisters were used as the hallways at Hogwarts in several scenes from the first few movies.

Price trend information excludes taxes and fees and is based on base rates for a nightly stay for 2 adults found in the last 7 days on our site and averaged for commonly viewed hotels in Cotswolds. Select dates and complete search for nightly totals inclusive of taxes and fees.

Where to stay

  • Burford
Tucked into a bend of the River Windrush, Burford  is dotted with cosy inns and B&Bs, along with comfortable cafes and tearooms. Stroll to one of the small town’s pubs and along the way you can soak up the variety of 17th- and 18th-century buildings.

  • Gloucester
Big-city shopping is among the draws at Gloucester, although you’re still just minutes from the small towns that attract people to the Cotswolds. Stay near Gloucester Cathedral for boutique hotels and easy access to High Street shops, or Gloucester Quays for factory shops and budget-friendly chain hotels.

  • Tewkesbury
At the centre of town is 14th-century Tewkesbury Abbey, featuring the country’s highest Norman tower. Around it are so many historic buildings—some as old as the 12th century—that it feels like you’re stepping back in time. Budget inns are available near the High Street, but it’s worth the splurge to stay at local golf and private park hotels with manicured gardens.

  • Cirencester

  • Chipping Campden
There are inns and B&Bs scattered throughout this compact village, and any of them will put you up close to bistros and cafes made from locally quarried limestone. Fancy a walk? The 100-mile Cotswold Way Trail, a quick jaunt from Lower High Street, begins in Chipping Campden and stretches all the way to Bath.

  • Bath
The only U.K. city designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Bath is famous for the Thermae Bath Spa, the region’s only natural hot springs where you can take a dip. The streets around the historic site are filled with hotels, along with opportunities for shopping, dining, and theatre.

  • Stroud
A serious café scene and one of the best farmer’s markets in England make Stroud an excellent spot for free-spirited travellers. Lodging options are quite spread out, so this is one spot where a car will come in handy, even for in-town travel. Cycling paths and canalside walkways also help you get to the town centre.
