  • Trimontium Museum
Trimontium Museum tells the story of the Roman fort complex at nearby Newstead. Trimontium was a frontier post at the outer limits of the Roman Empire, and served as a base for further incursions to the north. Rediscovered and excavated in the early 20th century, it has produced some of the finest Roman artefacts ever found in Scotland and is also home to the most northerly amphitheatre - so far - found in the Empire. The Trimontium Museum was established over 30 years ago to tell the story of the frontier post and its people, and put some of the finds on public display. The museum has been awarded 5 star rating by Visit Scotland and is the recipient of the Best Visitor Attraction Thistle Award 2023 for South of Scotland. There are weekly guided walks to the fort site and around the town April- October. The Trimontium Museum is a voluntary organisation and welcomes new members to help us tell the story of our unique site.

  • Melrose Abbey
The abbey grounds, cloister and museum are open. Probably the most famous ruin in Scotland, the abbey was founded by David I in 1136 for the Cistercian Order, and it was largely destroyed by Richard II's English army in 1385. The surviving remains of the church are of the early 15th century, and are of an elegance unsurpassed in Scotland. Objects found during excavation are displayed in the Commendator's House. The exterior of this magnificent ruin is decorated by unusual sculptures, including hobgoblins, cooks with ladles and a bagpipe playing pig. The abbey is also thought to be the burial place of Robert the Bruce's heart, marked with a commemorative carved stone plaque within the grounds.
