Hidden in the forest of Rothiemurchus, this beautiful place is one of the most loved in the UK. Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its 13th century island castle, was voted Britain's Best Picnic Spot. Step back in time and retrace the steps of the Highland cattle raiders as you enjoy views of the dramatic and mysterious Highland castle and enjoy the exceptional wildlife of this forest particularly the Red Squirrels and Scottish Crossbills. You can enjoy some of the best low level walking in Scotland. Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path around the loch is suitable for motorised wheel chairs, off road buggies and is part of the Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths.

RSPB Loch Garten Nature Centre has recently undergone a major refurbishment & is now open for visitors to the end of August - the rest of the reserve is open all year round. Covid measures are in place for everyone's safety. Loch Garten is part of RSPB Abernethy reserve & the centre is in stunning Caledonian pineforest, a short walk from the shores of beautiful Loch Garten. Get close to red squirrels & small birds at our feeders & enjoy the forest, with activities for children, presentations on wildlife, updated interpretation & an enthusiastic team to help you make the most of your visit. The shop sells binoculars & telescopes, nature books, toys, hot & cold drinks, sandwiches, ice creams & snacks. Two beautiful woodland walks take you through magnificent pine forest to tranquil Loch Garten & Loch Mallachie - accessed from the Nature Centre car park & from the nearby Loch Mallachie car park. 2021 - no breeding ospreys at Loch Garten. Last entry to the Nature Centre is at 16:30.

The Cairngorm Mountain Resort is situated on Britain’s 6th highest mountain in the Cairngorms National Park. Enjoy a trip on Scotland’s only funicular railway to the highest restaurant in the UK reaching the Ptarmigan building at over 1,097m. During the summer months any visitors who take the train are not permitted to exit the top station in keeping with the Cairngorm Conservation Plan. It is a place of outstanding natural beauty. In winter the resort is a haven for Snowsports. The Cairngorm Mountain gets the most reliable snow in Scotland and provides plenty of terrain for all levels. Whether you are a beginner or are looking for something more extreme, you are sure to have a great day out. In Summer, guests can enjoy activities such as guided walks or simply enjoy the views from 635m (Car Park Level). Our Adventure Play & Tubing Park is a must do activity with incredible views .
